Day Log: Wine to Whales Baja Caravan 2018

Day 1-2, Potrero County Park, San Diego County, California U.S.A.

Lunch basket, CB Radio check on arrival. Mexican Connection Welcome & Orientation: Travel Group formation for detailed briefings, questions & answers and Happy Hour. A quick trip across the border to Tecate for FMM (Tourist) Cards, pesos, lunch, shop- ping. Then back to Potrero Park for Happy Hour discussion of next day’s Caravan plan.

Day 3-4, Zoologico Parque del Nino Jersey, Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico

Exotic campsite in the valley where 90% of Mexican wine is made. Winery tour, tapas and tasting of premium wine of Mexico’s largest winery. Zoologico-taco breakfast and tour of this multifaceted fun park & zoo. Exploration of wineries, craft breweries and local food vendors (car pooling & designated drivers recommended).

Day 5-12, La Jolla Beach Camp, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico

Ocean beachfront camping amid a unique group of Mexican & Expat Americans. Local orientation and Caravan Welcome Buffet. Visits with potential local charity recipients. Happy Hour with fascinating La Jolla tales by the Pabloff Family. Enjoy Carnaval/Mardi Gras with parades, food & festivities! La Jolla Fiesta: Baja BBQ Comidas y Margaritas on the patio, Folklorico Dances, Band Concert, Silent & Live Charity Auctions in Teatro La Jolla. High tide visit to the famous La Bufadora marine geyser followed by optional romantic ocean view Valentine dinner. Distribution of donated items to local charities. Beach days or sightseeing options galore: 1. Ensenada City Tour; 2. Cava de Marcelo artisanal cheese cellar tour; 3. Las Canadas Adventure Park (zip lines, water sports, ATV rentals, horseback rides). 4. Visit nearby Santo Tomas, Mexico’s oldest winery.

Day 13-15, Molino Viejo, San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico

Reserved bayside camping at historic Molino Viejo Restaurant & Bar. Each Caravanner will enjoy two fine dinners. There is a large meeting room reserved for Caravanners to use and enjoy. Happy Hour with cervezas y tapas. Charter sport fishing is available and sandy ocean beaches are nearby. Stock up on fresh local produce and U.S. ULSD diesel.

Day 16-17, Rancho Santa Ynez, Baja California, Mexico

Another scenic drive featuring bizarre Boojum trees and gigantic boulders. An outdoor Mexican dinner awaits each Travel Group’s arrival. Petrographs within walking distance, a short drive to a historic mission restaurant/bar or longer drive to view cave paintings.

Day 18-21, Mario’s Campground, Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur, Mexico

The Caravan arrives at Mario's just in time to settle in to Happy Hour appetizers and a fascinating discussion of Grey Whales, their favorite lagoon and the world’s largest Salt Works it inspired. From Salt Works tour to your whale boat ride in a lagoon full of 2,000 cavorting Gray Whales... this is a “bucket list” must! Next, the Chapter 8 Annual General Meeting points the way to the 38th year of the Mexican Connection. A grand Farewell Buffet Dinner with live Mexican Serenades ends with Hugs & Happy Trails...

While the Wine to Whales Caravan ends here… potential return trips via different routes are posted with sign-up sheets to form mini-caravans of like-minded folks.
