chapter 5 natural resources notes
TRANSCRIPT
Chapter 5 Natural Resources
I. Earth’s resourcesa. Types of resources
i. Renewable – earth reproduces quicklyii. Nonrenewable – takes millions of years to reproduce
b. Conserving natural resourcesi. Energy conservation – using less
ii. Reuse/recycle – requires less energy than processing newly mined material.
II. Fossil fuelsa. Types of fossil fuels
i. Liquid – Petroleum/oil – made into gasolineii. Gas – natural gas used in houses and industry
iii. Solid – coal – used in power plants to make electricityb. How do they form? Death of organisms get compacted over time
to become one of the above – see diagram on page 129-130c. How do we get them so that we can use them?
i. Drilling for oil and natural gasii. Mining for coal
d. Problems with using fossils fuelsi. The gases given off by using them cause acid rain.
ii. We have a limited about because they are nonrenewable.iii. Smog from the gases given off cause photochemical haze
called smog.III. Alternative energy resources (often called renewable resources) – we
have an unlimited supply but are often difficult or expensive to use. Know the information from your graphic organizer.
