The Utes Meet Father Escalante

• The “Great Encounter” was a time when different groups of American Indians had to deal with the foreign people who came onto their land, and who eventually stayed and changed the Indian lifestyle forever.

• In what ways do you think that this encounter could have changed the way the Indians lived?

Ways in which change happens

• There were many peaceful encounters, but there were also conflicts. The Spanish explorers, mountain men, and pioneers all brought new diseases to the Indian peoples that were devastating to the population.

• The Spanish brought Horses, Guns, and trade• The natives showed the Spanish how to find

food, and how to communicate and trade with them.

Dominguez and Escalante• Two Catholic priests• Their mission was to find a better route from Santa Fe to

Monterey. They tried to avoid Arizona because they had heard that the natives were hostile. They traveled North from New Mexico through Colorado and Utah. They make their journey in 1776.

• What was important about this year for Americans?• Why would this route be a slower way to Monterey?

Answers

• 1776 was a year that the colonies of America declared their independence. The 4th of July, 1776.

• Monterey is clearly faster to reach through Arizona. The land is not as harsh in Arizona as it is in Nevada as well. They took a great risk in going North. The Grand Canyon is another obstacle if they wanted to return. You can see this on page 63.

Old Spanish Trail

The Trip• Dominguez and Escalante kept a journal of the

trip. This is still available today, and gives great information about the land and the people that was used by many explorers in the future such as Brigham Young.

• The Spanish met up with the natives and had some positive and negative encounters.

• Escalante’s journal tells us that they taught the Indians “how to farm and raise livestock, whereby they would then have everything necessary in food and clothing.”

A wide river and a new guide

• They spoke of a rive called Rio San Buenaventura.

• It was part of a belief in a river that flowed to the ocean called the Northwest Passage

• This was actually the Green River• Jose Maria, guide for the Spanish, was a

Timpanogot Ute.

End of a Journey

• An early winter stopped the explorers from going on to Monterey. Sloshing through snow and mud, they finally reached the Grand Canyon. This obviously stopped them, and they walked Southeast back to Santa Fe.
