Driving too Slowly
A larger concern on major highways than on back roads.
NJ law prohibits blocking traffic by slow driving.

Turning Regulations
Right Turn on Red- Must Come to a complete stop first. Watch for No Turn On Red signs. NJ is a “Right on Red” State.
When making turns you must use your turn signals 100 feet in advance.
Rights and Lefts- Don’t cut into other lanes.
When two cars are making left turns always turn front bumper to front bumper.

Stopping Regulations
Never attempt to beat a traffic light change.
When you must stop- Intersections, red lights, officer orders, yielding situations, school buses ,alleys and side streets, open bridges, pedestrians.

Stopping at Railroad Crossings Flashing lights and Crossbucks. Stop 15 feet from crossing when lights
are flashing. If your car stalls on the tracks what do
you do?

Stopping for Buses Stop 25 feet in front and back of the buses when
the lights are flashing red. Bus stopped on a highway with a median- slow to
10 mph and continue. If bus is stopped in front of school, slow to 10 MPH

Emergency Vehicles Steer to extreme right of road and stop as
soon as possible. Once vehicle passes keep 300 feet behind it.
NJ “Move Over” Law- move to an adjacent lane if possible for emergency vehicles

Lights Headlights must be used 1\2 hour after
sunset and 1\2\ hour before sunrise and also during rain, snow and ice, storms, and when fog is present.
Must be used when visibility is less than 500 feet.
Bright and Dim- What’s the difference? Overhead lights- should not be used
when car is in motion.

Cell Phones- July 1, 2004 May not use a hand held wireless
phone on any public road. Fine is between $100 and $250 for
breaking this law.
