Decision making ?

The thought process of selecting a logical choice from the available options.

When trying to make a good decision, a person must weight the positives and negatives of each option, and consider all the alternatives. For effective decision making, a person must be able to forecast the outcome of each option as well, and based on all these items, determine which option is the best for that particular situation.


Solution Types

Structured problem

ü easy to understand, clearly defined and occur repeatedly and can be routinely managed

Semi Structured Problem

ü Semi-structured problems fall between structured and unstructured problems.

ü Only some of the phases are structured in semi-structured problems.

ü It requires a combination of standard procedures and individual judgment.

ü Ex: annual evaluation of employees, trading bonds, setting marketing budgets for consumer products.

Unstructured problem

ü Unstructured problems are novel and non-routine, complex.

ü For unstructured problems we cannot specify some procedures to make a decision.

ü Ex: expanding the business, moving operations to foreign countries,new product,new technology.

ü IS must provide a wide range of information products to support these types of decisions at all levels of the organization.

Strategic decision makingA board of directors and an executive committee of the CEO develop long-range planning.

Decisions made at the strategic level tend to be unstructured.


Tractical decision makingMid-level mangers deal with middle level management activities such as short-term planning, medium range plans and control.

Decisions made at the tactical management level tend to be semi-structured.


Operational decision makingOperating managers deal with day-to-day operations of an organization, such as assigning employees to tasks, or placing or purchase an order.

Decisions made at the operational management level tend to be more structured.


Type of DSS

1. Enterprise-Wide DSS ออกแบบมาสำหรับใช้กับข้อมูลที่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงอยู่ตลอดเวลา (Dynamic) ซึ่งข้อมูลเหล่านี้จะเป็นข้อมูลที่มีอยู่โดยทั่วไปในองค์กร เช่น OLAP(On-Line Analytical Processing)

2. Desktop DSS ออกแบบมาเพื่อใช้กับงานเฉพาะทาง โดยอาศัยข้อมูลที่ค่อนข้างเสถียร (Static) หรือมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่ค่อนข้างน้อยและไม่บ่อยหนัก เช่น การวิเคราะห์ทางการเงิน


ขั้นตอนของระบบ DSS

Ò Intelligent Phase เป็นขั้นตอนของการวิเคราะห์ปัญหา

✓ Integration DSS ที่มีประสิทธิภาพควรจะมีความสามารถในการแลกเปลี่ยนข้อมูลกับระบบอื่นๆได้ เช่น กับระบบงานบัญชีที่มีอยู่ เพื่อช่วยในการนำข้อมูลที่จะใช้ในการวิเคราะห์เข้ามาในระบบ และนำข้อมูลที่เป็นผลลัพธ์ออกไปประยุกต์ใช้ต่อไป
