The Senior Visitors Program

T his Fredericksburg service program promotes independence and healthy living for older adults in their own

home environment and fosters a continued connection to their community. The program matches socially isolated seniors with trained volunteers who provide a friendly visit for an hour, on a weekly basis. There is no cost to the client for this program. The ongoing relationship can result in an especially meaningful and satisfy-ing experience for the volunteer while it fills a void in the life of an elderly person in our community.

The Program is seeking volunteers to serve as visitors. For more information about volunteering, attending an orientation or about how to refer a senior citizen to the program, contact the Senior Visitors Program at 540-371-2704 or email [email protected]

Consumer Corner By Juanita Channel

I n response to last month’s article, Consumer Blues, SJ called me a few weeks back to share that she

had a similar experience with being charged twice for an item. Jessica shared that she always checks her receipts before leaving the store. I was so excited to hear that you are reading the con- sumer notes and taking heed to the advice. I’m diligently keeping my own advice and was over- charged by $1 for produce two days ago. Customer service sent some-one to verify the price, but paid me be-fore the staff member returned. I believe he knew I had been overcharged. Please continue to check your receipts before leaving the store.

J oin AARP Fredericksburg Chapter as we cruise to Bermuda, for five days, departing on June

23, 2018 on Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas from Cape Liberty, Bayonne New Jersey.

The Anthem is the world’s most revo- lutionary ship, with skydiving right on the deck. You can play at the SeaPlex, an activities space with bumper cars, a roller skating rink, a full-size basketball court, circus school, and more. If leisurely pursuits are more your speed, enjoy breathtaking island sights from the best seat in any house, the North Star. Grab a drink at the Bionic Bar, where mixology meets technology. Enjoy delicious bites provided by the first food truck to ever set sail and music from a floating DJ booth suspended overhead.

The staterooms on Anthem of the Seas are spacious and luxurious. Every detail has been designed with soothing aesthetics to give you a comfortable yet sophisticated sense of home.

A world of culinary exploration awaits you too. Dining options have been reimagined to give you a culinary experience at sea as vast, varied and eye-opening as dining in the world's most cosmopolitan cities. Feel right at home as you enjoy the classic dishes you have come to love in the Main Dining Room.

For additional information, please contact trip coordinator Juanita Channel, 540-370-8757 or Travel Agent, Jackie Powell, 609-217-3762.

My latest concern is homeowner warranties. I have never had an appliance replaced although I have paid for warranties for years. I would like to hear from anyone who has had an appliance replaced by a home-owner warranty policy. They are very good at responding to repair calls and sometimes the repairs just string you along until the appliance breaks permanently. I finally decided to drop the policy I had for my rental property. I will just pay for the repairs as they come and replace the appliance needed.

A TM and credit card skimmers routinely pop up across Virginia. A card skimmer is a small device that affixes to a card reader. It allows a thief to illegally collect credit and debit card information from unsuspecting customers. The typical ATM skimmer is smaller than a deck of cards and fits over an

existing card reader. Look for obvious signs of tampering. If the machine looks suspicious or different than normal, don't use it. You might be at risk if the keypad backlight is off, a terminal looks especially wide or the chip reader is deeper than normal. To be safe, use secure ATM machines under video surveillance or inside a bank lobby. They’re less likely to be tampered. Pay careful attention to what the card reader and keypad normally look like on the ATMs you use most frequently. Don’t use an ATM if the card reader ap-pears to be added on, fits poorly, or is loose. Inspect the machine for items that were installed over or around the PIN pad of the ATM. Look for an attachment on the ATM that contains a small hole that is pointed in the direction of the PIN pad. Lightly tug the area of the card slot. Most skimming devices are attached with double-sided tape for quick removal by the crooks. Cover the keypad with your other hand while typing your PIN. This is the best way to ensure that your PIN number is not recorded.

How to Spot Card Skimmers

National Night Out

T his is an annual community-building campaign that pro-

motes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement and it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, US territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. It is held on the first Tuesday in August (Texas celebrates on the first Tuesday in October). Neighborhoods host block parties, festi-vals, parades, cookouts and other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits, and much, much more. There are several celebrations in our area so take the time to spend the night out and visit one of them.
