Chapter 2 Minitab Recipe Cards

Pie charts

• Put the categories from Example 2.3 in C1 of the worksheet and their frequencies in C2.

• Note that the first column is now C1-T, the T denoting that it is a text column

• Enter the names of the variables as shown.

• Select Pie Chart from the Graph menu.

• In the Pie Chart command window select Chart values from a table.

• Type C1 under Categorical variable: and C2 under Summary variables.

• Click the OK button and the graphic will appear.

Bar charts

• Enter the categories and frequencies from Example 2.3 in C1 and C2.

• Select Bar Chart from the Graph menu.

• In the next window access the Bars represent: menu and choose Values from a table.

• Select the Simple chart type then click OK.

• Specify C2 under Graph variables: and C1 under Categorical variable: then click OK.

• The chart appears in a new window.

Component bar charts

• Using the data from Example 2.4 list the retailers in C1, the number of transactions with cards in C2 and the number of transactions without cards in C3.

• Choose Bar Chart from the Graph menu.

• In the next window choose Values from a table from the Bars represent: menu.

• Choose the Stack chart type from the selection under Two way table then click OK.

• Specify C2 and C3 in the space under Graph variables:.

• Specify C1 under Row labels:.

• Under Table Arrangement click Rows are outermost categories and columns are innermost.

• Click OK.

• The chart appears in a new window.

Cluster bar charts

• Using the data from Example 2.4 enter the retailers in C1, the number of transactions with cards in C2 and the number of transactions without cards in C3.

• Choose Bar Chart from the Graph menu.

• In the next window choose Values from a table from the Bars represent: menu.

• Choose the Cluster chart type from the selection under Two way table then click OK.

• Specify C2 and C3 in the space under Graph variables:.

• Specify C1 under Row labels:.

• Under Table Arrangement click Rows are outermost categories and columns are innermost.

• Click OK.

• The chart appears in a new window.

Histograms

• Put the data from Example 2.11 into a worksheet column.

• Select Histogram from the Graph menu.

• Choose the Simple chart from the set in the Histograms window and click OK.

• Type C1 under Graph variables: in the command window that appears and click OK.

• The graph appears in a new window.

Scatter diagrams

• Put the data from Example 2.24 into C1 and C2.

• Select Scatterplot from the Graph menu.

• Choose the Simple chart from the set in the Scatterplots window and click OK.

• In the command window specify C2 and C2 under the Y variables and X variables columns respectively then click OK.

• The graph appears in a new window.

Time series charts

• Put the Employees data from Example 2.25 in C1.

• Select Time Series Plot from the Graph menu.

• Choose the Simple chart from the set in the Time Series Plots window and click OK.

• Type C1 under Series in the command window and click OK.

• In the graph a default time scale labeled Index will appear along the horizontal axis.

• Customize the time scale by returning to the Time Series Plot window.

• Click the Time/Scale button and under Time Scale click Calendar. Pick Year from the Calendar options.

• Enter the first time period, which for the data in Example 2.25 is 2001.

• Enter the first time period, which for the data in Example 2.25 is 2001.

• Click OK then OK in the Time Series Plot – Simple box.

• The graph appears with a customised horizontal scale.
