Chapter 22.1: Solving One Step Equations
Properties/DefinitionsAddition Property of Equality: For every real
number, a, b & c, if a=b, then a + c = b + c
Subtraction Property of Equality: For every real number, a, b & c, if a=b, then a – c = b – c
To solve an equation, we find the value(s) of the variable to make the equation true. This value(s) is called a solution of the equation. We solve equations by using inverse operations, or operations that undo one another.
ExamplesSolve the following equations
x – 3 = 8
m – 10 = 2
y – 7.6 = 4
Examples cont.
-18 = 6 + w
2/3 + y = 1/4
15 a + 4.2
Examples cont.If a mom who weighs 129 lbs stands on scale
with her baby and the scale says 147, how much does the baby weigh?
PropertiesMultiplication Property of Equality: For every real
number, a, b & c, if a=b, then a∙c = b∙c
Division Property of Equality: For every real number, a, b & c, if a = b, then a/c = b/c
