CHAPTER 16: LESSONS 3 & 4

CIRCULATORY & RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS

ASSIGNMENT

• Define all vocabulary in study guide for Circulatory System

• Answer Questions 1-6 on page 417 (due Thursday)

• Question #7—BONUS ASSIGNMENT (extra credit)• In addition to lifestyle, heredity influences circulatory health.

With a family (not a group) member (preferably a parent or guardian) investigate the role that heredity plays in hypertension and other problems of the circulatory system.

• Write up your discussion in a half page summary—DUE MONDAY

VOCABULARY QUIZ MODIFIED

1. What is the main organ within the circulatory system? a) lungsb) stomachc) heartd) kidneys

“ITS TIME TO DELIVER”

• List the TWO main jobs of the Circulatory System.A. Carries Food, water & Oxygen to all the cellsB. Removes waste from the cells

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

• What body parts make up the circulatory system?• Heart• Blood• Blood vessels –(3 TYPES)

• Veins• Carries blood TO the Heart

• Arteries• Carries blood AWAY from the Heart

• Capillaries• Tiniest blood vessels in the body• Exchanges oxygen & nutrients and removes waste from the cells

• What is the hearts main job?• Transport blood (food, water, & oxygen) to all parts

of body and removes waste from all the cells

CONCEPT MAPPING 16-3

BLOOD

• Four blood types (What type are YOU?) • Type A• Type B• Type AB• Type O

• What is blood made up of?• Plasma

• Liquid part of blood (92% Water)• Platelets

• Help blood clot at the site of a wound• Red blood cells

• Carries Oxygen too cells and Carbon Dioxide away from cells • White blood cells

• Carry germ fighters from immune system to areas of the body that need them

BLOOD FLOW PARAGRAPH

Blood enters the heart from the upper and lower BODY. This blood is rich in CARBON DIOXIDE. This flows from the RIGHT ATRIUM to the RIGHT VENTRICLE. From the right ventricle, blood is pumped to the LUNGS through the

pulmonary artery. This blood rich in oxygen returns to the HEART through the pulmonary

vein.It then travels to the LEFT ATRIUM into the LEFT VENTRICLE. The oxygen rich blood leaves the heart from the left ventricle through

the AORTA. The aorta is the LARGEST artery in the body that branches into smaller

arteries. Blood flows through these smaller arteries. Oxygen, nutrients and waste products are exchanged at the

CAPILLARIES. The capillaries are the tiniest blood vessels in the body. Carbon Dioxide from the cells is then transferred into the VEINS and

back to the heart.

VOCABULARY REVIEW QUIZ

a) Circulatory systemb) Muscular System c) Respiratory systemd) Skeletal System

2. The main opening through which the air enters the lungs.

a) Tracheab) Bronchic) Alveolid) diaphram

WHAT DOES THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM DO?

• Supplies the body with constant oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide

TWO TYPES OF RESPIRATION

a) External—exchange of oxygen & carbon dioxide between the blood and the air in the lungs

b) Internal—exchange of gases between the blood and the cells in your body

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM • A person inhales through their Nose & Mouth• Trachea is known as the windpipe• The Epiglottis prevents food and liquid from entering

the trachea. • After oxygen travels through the trachea is goes to the

bronchi. The bronchi are located inside the lungs of a person

• The oxygen travels through the bronchial tubes and the oxygen is absorbed by the alveoli, air sacs in the lungs.

• Oxygen enter these air sacs and is sent to the blood, which delivers the oxygen to the rest of the body.

• Carbon Dioxide leaves the body through the alveoli and it is exhaled through the lungs.

• A common problem with the respiratory system is Asthma , a serious condition that causes the bronchial tubes to become narrowed or blocked.

PROBLEMS WITH CIRCULATORY & RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

• Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)• Can lead to kidney failure, heart attack or stroke

• Heart Attack• Blockage of blood flow to heart

• Stroke• Blood clot in vessels of brain

• Arteriosclerosis (Hardening of arteries) • Reduces that amount of blood that can flow through

• Asthma • Tiny passages in lunch become narrow or blocked

• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)• Chronic lung disease—may need to be on oxygen

CARE OF HEART & LUNGS

• EXERCISE, EXERCISE• Teens

• 60 min/day 5-7 days/week

• EAT RIGHT (balanced diet)• Low fat• High fiber

• Avoid tobacco & other drugs• Manage stress
