Grammar comment 14-2The Dative case and Impersonal Constructions

In Russian, adverbs are used in impersonal constructions such as:

Трудно учиться в университете.

It's hard to study at the university.Note that there is no subject in this sentence

construction. We simply translate the adverb 'трудно' as 'it's hard', supplying the subject 'it'.

Sentences of this type can be “personalized” by putting the person involved (the subject of the infinitive) in the Dative case.

Since there is no subject, we can use the past tense neuter form было to put the whole construction in the past tense.
