Sparta Township boasts a rich history dating back to colonial times. In 1777,Judge Robert Ogden and family lived in a house across Main Street from thepresent Town Hall. Ogden’s wife Phoebe named the home “Sparta” because shebelieved that she and her family were enduring great hardships due to the warand were living the “Spartan” life — tough, proud, and disciplined. In 1797when the first post office was established, Sparta was officially given thatname. Many famous people lived or visited Sparta, including GeorgeWashington, General Lafayette, Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison, whomined in Sparta for nearly a decade.

For almost 100 years, Sparta continued to be an iron ore town, until the endof the Civil War which brought an end to the forge industry in Sparta. In the1850’s the first railroads in the county brought weekend visitors to the locallake. In 1889,Thomas Edison bought the Ogden mine and spent two milliondollars on his magnetic separation of iron. Homes were then being built withelectricity and running water, which were rare at the time. In 1898, Edison’sore was no longer in demand and the following year he closed down the mine.

In 1926, to encourage summer vacationers, a dam was constructed by theCrane Company at the end of a stream at the Ogden Meadow. By 1928,water went over the top of the dam, eventually forming Lake Mohawk. Thelake, three miles long with ten miles of shore line, soon had many summerhomes surrounding it.

Today, Sparta has grown into a strong community with residents living inthis peaceful area all year round. As a homeowner at Chapel Hill at Sparta, you will enjoy the prestige, beauty, and rich tradition that Sparta Townshiphas to offer.
