In four years,hehas led the journal toan impactfactorof3.896in2010,whichranksitthetoporiginalresearchjournalinthefluidandplasmaphysics category. He is on the organization committee of several international microfluidicconferences, including AdvancedMicrofluidics and Nanofluidics, an annual Asian conferencethathefounded.ChiaistheDirectoroftheCenterforMicrofluidicsandMedicalDiagnosticsattheUniversityofNotreDame,wherehehas initiatedthefirst technologytransferefforts.HeandhisPhDandpostdocstudentsare inventorsof10NotreDamepatentsand5provisionalpatents,thelargestIPoutputfromanylabatNotreDame.Fivetechnologieshavebeenlicensedbystartups. OnestartupFCubedLLCis locatedatNotreDameandhasastaffof17.AnotherstartupAgenDxhas just licensedanotherofhistechnologies.Chiahasalsoworkedwith largecompanies like IBMand theFarEasternGroupon thenew technologies. Since2000,18PhDandpost-docstudentsoftheChanglaboratoryhaveembarkedonacademiccareersastenure-trackprofessorsatChemicalEngineering,MechanicalEngineering,ElectricalEngineering,FoodScience,Chemistrydepartmentsin5continents.Twoofthem(JasonKeithandZilinChen)nowholdendowedchairsandfiveofthem(JayneWu,DmitryKopelevich,AdrienneMinerick,ZachGagnonandSagnikBasuray)wereawardedtheNSFCareerAwardandthreearewomen.(Chia’sfirstPhDstudentin1984,M.Aluko,isanAfricanAmericanandisnowthePresidentofFederalUniversity,Nigeria.)Severalundergraduatestudentswhoworkedinhislab.arecurrentlyattopgraduate programs. His lab has regular visitors from foreign (National Chong Cheng, PekingUniv, Monterrey Tech, Imperial College, Swinburn, Moscow State in 2014) and US (Purdue,Naval Med Lab, Boston Univ in 2014) institutions. The expertise of these collaborators inMedicine, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Engineering, is synthesized into innovativediagnosticdevicesatChia’slab.Chia believes that Precision and Personalized Diagnostics/Therapy cannot rely on just staticgenomic information but must rather depend on new home-use biotechnologies that canregularlymonitoranentirelibraryofbiomarkersanddiseasedcellsforspecificindividuals.Theproductsofthisnewsectormustbedesigned inaplatformformattoalloweasytailoringfordifferentindividualsandbiomarkers.Theplatformshouldleadtoaturn-keydevicethatcanbeused by an average consumer. Such a platform requires low-cost andmulti-plexmolecularmanipulation, detection and quantification technologies with unprecedented sensitivity andaccuracy.His lab is striving to realizemanyof these technologieswithnewmicro/nanofluidicphenomena and designs. Individual components of the platform are being developed bystartupsandamulti-nationalforeasy-entrymarketsinfoodsafety,contagiousdiseasecontrolandenvironmentalmonitoring.Theultimateaimis,however,tocatalyzeanewbiotechnologysector.
