Rachel, Kaden’s mother, enrolled him in the Children’s Learning Center with apprehension. One of Rachel’s main concerns is safety because Kaden has a tendency to wander off. At the Children’s Learning Center, having the secure facility with key card access is a feature Rachel appreciates.

Kaden, age 3, was diagnosed with ADHD and needs a nurturing learning environment where teachers individualize his education to his needs. Kaden receives physical, occupational, and behavioral therapy at the Southern Indiana Rehab Hospital which is located in the same building as the Children’s Learning Center. As a result of therapy and the Children’s Learning Center, Kaden can identify colors and is learning to write his name. He has more self-control and is dressing himself, before he could not do either of these.

Rachel once felt drained and exhausted, now she sees the progress Kaden is making. She credits the teachers at the Children’s Learning Center with Kaden’s progress. “I would recommend the CLC. They are awesome people who care.”

Strategic Goals 2011-2014

Goodwill of Southern Indiana launched a new program in October 2012 called A Book of My Own. The program’s purpose is to increase children’s exposure to books in order to enhance their reading performance. Goodwill began distributing children’s books to organizations that work with children. Those organizations give the books to children to keep as their own. The targeted age group is birth to ten years old.

Since beginning A Book Of My Own program less than a year ago, Goodwill of Southern Indiana has distributed 12,523 books! The following organizations have been chosen as distribution sites from the nine counties where Goodwill of Southern Indiana provides services: Bedford – WIC Office and LIFE Food Pantry; Clarksville – Center for Women & Families and Child Place; Corydon – Harrison County Head Start; Floyds Knobs – St. Elizabeth’s Maternity Center; Jeffersonville – WIC Office and Center for Lay Ministries; Madison – Boys & Girls Club and Head Start; New Albany – Volunteers of America, Southern Indiana; North Vernon – Jennings County Coordinating Council; Salem – Women’s Shelter and CARE; Scottsburg – Head Start; Seymour – READ Jackson County and Boys & Girls Club of Seymour.

Studies show that children who grow up around books, who own books, and who are read to by their parents perform better in school. Important facts state that 61% of people living in poverty have no children’s books in their home. The more types of reading material in a home, the higher students in those homes score in reading proficiency.

Goodwill of Southern Indiana is proud to give children a book of their own!
