DOI 10.1002/ep.10009 INTRODUCTION You may have heard that Environmental Progress, although still owned and under the editorial control of AIChE, is being published in partnership with John Wiley & Sons. This new partnership promises many benefits to readers. With this change in publishing, it is an appropriate time to look back and reflect on our history. Since AIChE began publishing Environmental Progress in 1982, it has been my privilege to be its Editor. In this capacity, I have worked closely with AIChE staff in the publication process. Initially, my Managing Editor was Maura Mullen. Maura worked with me for almost 20 years until her retirement in 2000. Her successor was Lois Anne DeLong. There was a smooth, seamless transition from one good managing editor to another. Lois Anne has been an AIChE employee for more than 25 years, serving in a variety of positions in com- munications and publication. She launched AIChExtra and Chapter One (AIChE’s former student magazine). Before Lois Anne’s most recent assignment as Manag- ing Editor of Environmental Progress and Process Safety Progress, she was the marketing manager of publications. She gave “her all” to Environmental Progress, initiating and bringing her exceptional writ- ing talents to bear on new columns and front matter issue. My only regret in “changing of the guard” for the publication of Environmental Progress moving from AIChE to Wiley is that I will miss working with my former colleagues at AIChE (who became friends as well as co-workers). In addition to Lois Anne, I have worked over the years with Beth Shery Sisk, who has served as Associate Editor, and Karen Simpson, who in prior years worked as Manuscript Editor. Further up the line was Mrs. Haeja Han, who was Publisher and Ex- ecutive Editor for AIChE. I shall miss all of them. In addition to Environmental Progress, Wiley will also publish Process Safety Progress and the AIChE Journal on behalf of the Institute. Wiley’s reputation for quality of publication of books and some 300 journals is well known. I look forward to working with their staff, which will include some AIChE employees who have joined Wiley. Wiley brings new methods and opportunities for the publication process, not the least of which will be the ability, soon, to receive, review, and accept articles on-line. When accepted and edited, these articles will be available on-line in HTML, as well as PDF, and with references that link to other published literature, ab- stracting and indexing services, etc. Both print and electronic versions of Environmental Progress will be available to readers. Moreover, Wiley will put the com- plete file of Environmental Progress back issues on- line. Changes are coming in content also. Mark Zappi of Mississippi State University has been appointed Review Article Editor. Dr. Zappi’s goal is to have one environmental review article published in each issue. Four single topic special issues also are planned: Risk Analysis, Environmental Membranes, Sustain- ability, and Process Integration. I am pleased to an- nounce that both Robert W. Peters and Ashok Kumar have agreed to stay on as Book Review Editor and Software Review Editor, respectively. I enter this new era of Environment Progress with an optimistic note. My pledge is to continue publishing a journal of high quality that is of interest to practicing chemical/environmental engineers. Reader comments and suggestions are solicited. © 2004 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Editorial Environmental Progress (Vol.23, No.1) Month 2004 1
