Voting Rights
• He believed that voting rights should be granted to all white men.
• This meant you no longer needed to be rich or own property to vote.
• This still excluded women and African Americans.
Moving West
• He believed that it was the countries destiny to move west.
Political Parties
• During Jackson’s election the current political parties disbanded and created a new party under him.
• It was called the Democratic Party and is still in formation today.

• He used the power of vetoing bills often.
• He did this because most of Congress was against his policies.
• He used what is called the spoils system and got many of his friends jobs in the government.

Economic Happenings
Crop failures and an imbalance between imports and exports and resulted in an economic disaster.
As crops recovered and economic growth continued, trust in the financial structure eventually rebounded so the situation recovered in the early 1840's
Economic Changes
In 1835, Jackson managed to reduce the federal debt to only $33,733.05, the lowest it had been since the first fiscal year of 1791.
President Jackson is the only president in United States history to have paid off the national debt.
However, this was short lived. A severe depression from 1837 to 1844 caused an increase in national debt within its first year.
Opposition To A National Bank
As President, Jackson worked to repeal the bank's federal charter. In Jackson's veto message, the bank needed to be abolished because of the following reasons.

It concentrated the nation's financial strength in a single institution.
It exposed the government to control by foreign interests.
Its purpose was mainly to make the rich richer.
It applied too much control over members of Congress.
It favored northeastern states over southern and western states.

economic situation.
