MagnesiumBeginswithChildren

Magnesiumwasnotatopicinmy2hoursofnutritionclassesduringmyfouryearsinmedicalschoolanditnevercameupinmyclinicalworkinthehospital.Exceptonce.Inmythirdyear,Iwasobservinginobstetricsandayoungwomanwasabouttodelivertwins.Butherbloodpressurewasrising,shewasbloatedwithfluidretention,andshewasconvulsingwithfluidbuildingupinherbrain.Iwonderedwhattheycouldgivehertostoptheseizures,bringdownherbloodpressure,andgetridoftheedema–andnotharmthebaby. BeforeIknewit,theattendingphysicianorderedanIVbagofmagnesiumtodripintoherveinsandshortlyherbloodpressurecamedown,shestoppedhavingseizuresandstartedeliminatingfluid.Itwasamonumentalexperienceformeknowingthatthemotherandbabyweresafeanditwasduetomagnesium.SinceIwasalreadystudyingnutritiononmyownIalsobeganwonderingwhymagnesiumwasn’tthefirstlineoftherapyforfluidretention,highbloodpressureandseizuresforeveryone. Magnesiumisavitalcomponentofahealthypregnancyanddelivery.Havingenoughmagnesiumduringpregnancycanimprovethehealthofourchildrenfromdayone.Buttheneedforitbeginsbeforebirth.Magnesiumcanpreventprematurecontractions,eclampsiaandgreatlyreducetheriskofachildsufferingcerebralpalsyandsuddeninfantdeathsyndrome(SIDS).Magnesiumineffectivedosagesshouldbearequiredsupplementforpregnantwomen. calfmusclesintorockswhenyoustretch,muscleachesandpains.Youlearntolivewiththem.ThenyoureadaboutmagnesiumorhearaboutitfromafriendorachiropractoranduseEpsomsaltsinabathortakeamagnesiumpillandyourmusclessighinrelief. Magnesiumistoplantchlorophyllasironittohumanhemoglobin.Inourbody,chlorophyllwithitsgiftofmagnesiumsuppliesthemeanstocreatelife‐givingenergyinourcells.Onapracticallevelthismeansthatmagnesiumprovidesoxygentoourmuscles.Also,ourcellsutilizeenergypacketscalledATP(adenosinetriphosphate)withthehelpofmagnesium.Animalstudiesprovedthatdecreasedexercisecapacitycouldbeanearlysignofmagnesiumdeficiency.Whengivenmagnesium,theirendurancewasrestored.Mosthumanstudiesconfirmthatanyformofexercisedepletesmagnesium.Wesweatitoutandstressitoutandneedextramagnesiumtoneutralizelacticacid. Infact,itisthemostimportantnutrientforathletestoenhanceperformance,preventlacticacidbuildup,andshortenrecoverytime.Overworkedmusclesproducefreeradicals,however,magnesiumaidsintheproductionofglutathione,thebody’ssuperantioxidant.Ifmusclesaredeficientinmagnesium,theybecomeirritatedandonedgedevelopingtics,twitches,andoutrightspasms.Ifyouarefeelinggenerallyirritatedandonedge,magnesiumdeficiencymaybethecause.Whenyouhavesufficientmagnesium,yourmusclesarerelaxedandyourwholebodybecomescalm. prescriptionmedicationtopreventcalciumbuildupiscalledacalciumchannelblocker.Nature’scalciumchannelblockerismagnesium;it’stheguardianangeloftheheart.Themostcommonlyuseddrugsinhighbloodpressurearediuretics.Theironyofusingdiureticsisthattheydepletethebodyofmagnesium.

InJune2008,TimRussert,awell‐knownandrespectedjournalistdiedsuddenlyandunexpectedlyofaheartattack.Iwroteaversionofthefollowingarticleshortlyafterhisdeath.Ithinkit’sanimportantoverviewofthecurrentpositionofmodernmedicineonheartdiseaseanditsinabilitytomakeheadwayintreatingthiscondition.MillionsofpeoplearoundtheworldareinthesamepositionasRussert–highcholesterol,highbloodpressureandonseveralmedicationstoavoidhavingaheartattack.Manyofyouwillseeyourselfinthispictureandnowyouknowwhatstepsyoucantaketopreventyourselffrombecomingastatistic.

WhyDidn’tTimRussertTakeMagnesium?“ThedeathofTimRussertstruckadeepcordintheheartsofmillionsofAmericanswhoawaittheseeminglyinevitablevisittoacardiacward.

Let’slookatthefactsofRussert’sdeath.Hewasknowntohavehighbloodpressure,highcholesterolandasymptomaticcoronaryarterydisease,whichmeanshehadcalcium/cholesterolplaquebuildingupinsidethearteriesofhisheartbutnochestpain.Hewasondrugsforhypertension,whichhaveaknowsideeffectofdrainingthebodyofmagnesium.HewasalsoonstatindrugsforhighLDLandtriglycerides,andlowHDL.

Onmediation,hisgoodcholesterol(HDL)rosefromthe20’sto37,which,accordingtohisdoctorswasan"acceptablelipidprofile.”Russertalsohadminimallyelevatedbloodsugarbutdidnothavediabetes(yet)andwasn’tondrugsfordiabetes(yet).Apparently,Russert’sstresstestinlateApril2008wasnormalsohisheartwasthoughttobeingoodshape.Twomonthslater,hewasdead.

ThefirstquestioniswhydidRussertdieifhewasinthecapablehandsofmedicalexpertsandonFDA‐approveddrugsforhiscondition?Andwhy,withalltheirexpertiseandalltheirmedicaleducation,didhisdoctorsneglectwhattheheartandbodyreallyneed—properdiet,supplements,andexercise.

Modernmedicinethinksit’ssmarterthanthehumanbrainandbody.Ittheorizesthattheheartmuscleisgettingtoomuchcalciumandgivesitacalciumchannelblocker,whenwhatitneedsismagnesium.Modernmedicinethinksthebodyhadtoomuchfluid,soitprescribesadiuretictolowerbloodpressurebutendsupflushingoutmagnesiumandpotassiumcausingaviciouscycleofmineralloss.Itthinkscholesterolisthebadguyandthecauseofallourills(whichitisnot)andgivesdrugsthatknockoutthebody’sabilitytomakecholesterolwhilecausingnumeroussideeffects.

Inmy200hoursofbiochemistryinmedicalschoolIlearned,andeveryotherdoctorwhostayedawakeinclasslearned,thateveryoneofthethousandsofmetabolicfunctionsinthebodyabsolutelyrequiresoneormorevitaminsandmineralsinordertoproceedtothenextbiochemicalreaction.It’sverysimpleandverybasicandverymuchforgottenbymost

doctors.Insteadoflearningaboutthebody’sneeds,weweretaughttodiagnosediseaseandtreatdiseasesymptomswithdrugsorsurgery.That’sourmandateandinthepast100years,noothersystemofhealthcarehasbeenpowerfulenoughtosuggestanyotherapproachtodisease.

However,everyonewantsgoodhealth.Healthisnotjusttheabsenceofdisease.Buthealthinvolvestheintakeofnaturalvitaminsandmineralsthatare,forthemostpart,absentfromthesoil.Ifthey’renotinthesoilthentheyareabsentfromourfoodandespeciallyabsentifweeatfastfoodsanddrinkartificiallysweetenedbeverages.Besidesgivingusthenecessarybuildingblocksforahealthybody,thesenutrients,especiallymagnesium,canprotectusfromhighbloodpressure,highcholesterol,andhighbloodsugar.Whywaituntilyouaresymptomatictotakeadrugwhenyoucanpreventtheconditioninthefirstplace?MagnesiumisanaturalstatinMagnesiumactsbythesamemechanismsasstatindrugstolowercholesterol. 1Everymetabolicactivityinthebodydependsonenzymes.Makingcholesterol,forexample,requiresaspecificenzymecalledHMG‐CoAreductase.Magnesiumslowsdownthisenzymaticreactionwhenitispresentinsufficientquantities.HMG‐CoAreductaseisthesameenzymethatstatindrugstargetandinhibit.Themechanismsarenearlythesame;however,magnesiumisthenaturalwaythatthebodyhasevolvedtocontrolcholesterolwhenitreachesacertainlevel,whereasstatindrugsareusedtodestroythewholeprocess.Thismeansthatifsufficientmagnesiumispresentinthebody,cholesterolwillbelimitedtoitsnecessaryfunctions—theproductionofhormonesandthemaintenanceofcellmembranes—andwillnotbeproducedinexcess.

It’sonlyinourpresent‐daycircumstancesofmagnesium‐deficientsoil,littlemagnesiuminprocessedfoods,andexcessiveintakeofcalciumandcalcium‐richfoodswithoutsupplementationofmagnesiumthatcholesterolhasbecomeelevatedinthepopulation.

Magnesiumisalsoresponsibleforseveralotherlipid‐alteringfunctionsthatarenotevensharedbystatindrugs.MagnesiumisnecessaryfortheactivityofanenzymethatlowersLDL,the“bad”cholesterol;italsolowerstriglyceridesandraisesthe“good”cholesterol,HDL.Anothermagnesium‐dependentenzymeconvertsomega‐3andomega‐6essentialfattyacidsintoprostaglandins,whicharerequiredforheartandoverallhealth.

Atleasteighteenhumanstudieshaveverifiedthatmagnesiumsupplementscanhaveanextremelybeneficialeffectonlipids.Inthesestudies,totalcholesterollevelswerereducedby6to23percent;LDL(bad)cholesterolwereloweredby10to18percent;tryglyceridesfellby10to42percent;andHDL(good)cholesterolroseby4to11percent.Furthermore,thestudiesshowedthatlowmagnesiumlevelsareassociatedwithhigher

Dr.MarkH.Ebell,aprofessorattheUniversityofGeorgia,deputyeditoroftheJournalAmericanFamilyPhysiciansays,"Patientsatlowriskbenefitverylittleitatall.Weendupovertreatingalotofpatients."

Doctorsarestilltryingtodecidewhythatisthecase.Theyprescribestatinsbecausetheylowercholesterolandsomewantthesedrugstobeusedasapreventivemeasureforthewholepopulation.Onethingtheytendtoignoreisthattheaccumulatedsideeffectsareworsethanthe'cure.'Theyaretoobusytreatingthecholesterolandnotthepatient.It’sliketheoldmedicaljoke–Thesurgerywasasuccessbutthepatientdied.

TheTimesreportedthata2006reportinTheArchivesofInternalMedicinewasananalysisofseventrialsofstatinuseinnearly43,000patients,mostlymiddle‐agedmenwithoutobviousheartdisease.Inthatanalysis,statinsdidnotlowermortality.ThesameresultswerefoundinamisnamedstudycalledProsper,publishedinTheLancetin2002,whichstudiedstatinuseinpeople70andolder.Athird2004reviewintheJournaloftheAmericanMedicalAssociationlookedat13studiesofnearly20,000women,bothhealthyandwithestablishedheartdiseaseandfoundnobenefit.Yes,thecholesterolmaygodownbutthatdoesn’tguaranteelongevity.

Theothermeasureofsuccesswithadrugisifitimprovesaperson'squalityoflife.Statincriticssaythereisnoevidencethatstatinusershaveabetterqualityoflife.Infactthequalityoflifemaybeworsenedbystatinsbecausemostdoctorscontinuetoignoreordon’trecognizethesideeffectsofstatinsandtreatthemwithotherdrugs.Musclepainistreatedwithanti‐inflammatories,impotencewithViagra,andmoodsymptomswithantidepressants.Allthesedrugshavetheirownsideeffects.Thedeclineofcoenzymeq10Amajorcauseforconcernabouttheuseofcholesterolloweringdrugs;antihypertensivessuchasbetablockersandhydrochlorothiazidediuretics;anddiabetesdrugsisthattheyallinhibittheproductionofcoenzymeQ‐10(CoQ‐10).LetmeexplainwiththehelpofWikipediawhyallthesedrugscauseheartdisease.

CQ‐10isavitamin‐likesubstancethatispresentinmosthumancells,insidemitochondria,theenergyfactoryofthecells.Mitochondriaarewherethebody'senergyisproduced.Inhumancells,foodisconvertedintobodyenergyinthemitochondriawiththeaidofCQ‐10andmagnesium.Ninety‐fivepercentofallthehumanbody'senergyrequirements(ATP)areconvertedwiththeaidofCoQ‐10.Therefore,thoseorganswiththehighest

Thereisanepidemicofheartfailureandnobodyseemstoknowwhy.ButiftheylookedatstatinuseanditsdestructionofCoQ‐10,theanswerwouldbeobvious.Thedrugsthatarebeingtakentosupposedlypreventheartdiseaseareactuallycausingheartdisease.

Sincemanyheartpatientsanddiabeticsaretakingallthreeclassesofdrugs–statins,antihypertensives,andoraldiabeticdrugstheyareallpotentiallylowinCoQ‐10.Moreandmoreofthesedrugsarebeingprescribedbecausedrugcompaniesareadvisingdoctorstoputpatientsonallthesedrugs“preventively”,withnostudiestoprovethisassertion.Theendresultwillbeahigherincidenceofheartdisease,hypertension,highcholesterol,diabetesanddrugsideeffectsinpeopleonthisexperimentaltripletherapy.NotinaccordwithourbodiesAdiabetestrialcalledACCORDwashaltedbecausepeopleonintensivetripledrugtreatmentweredying. 3Thetrialwasdesignedtotesttheeffectsofintensivebloodglucosecontrol,intensivecontrolofbloodlipids,andintensivecontrolofbloodpressure.Intensiveinthistrialmeanthighdosemedications.Notexercise,notdiet,notsupplements,justmedications.

Afterfouryears,257participantsintheintensivetreatmentgrouphaddied,comparedwith203inthestandardtreatmentgroup.Thestudywashaltedbecausethetreatmentwaskillingpeople.

Here’saverycommonstoryIhearfrommyclients(let’ssayit’sJack).Jackis60,hegoestohisdoctorforhisannualcheckupandhisbloodpressureisalittlehigh(probablyfromstressandlowmagnesiumlevels)andheisimmediatelyputonadiureticdrug.Whenhecomesbackthenexttime,hispressureishigher.Thedoctordoesn’tknowwhy,butit’sbecauseJack’smagnesiumisdrivenevenlowerbythediuretic.Hisdoctorjustthinkshe’scaughtJack’sbloodpressureearlyandhastogetmoreaggressive.ThedoctorputsJackonasecondantihypertensivedrug.Amonthlater,seeminglyoutoftheblue,butbecauseoflowerlevelsofmagnesium,hischolesterollevelsareelevatedandthedoctorputsJackonastatindrug.

Anothermonthpassesandhisbloodsugarlevelisstartingtoclimb.Withoutanybodyevenquestioningwhy,Jack’sdoctorputshimonadiabeticdrug.Oneoftheagreeduponsignsofdiabetesislowmagnesium.Butthat’snotevenconsidered.Bynow,Jackison4drugstotreatanunderlyingmagnesiumdeficiency,allofwhicharecausingseveremagnesiumdeficient.Jackisalsoscaredtodeaththathehasheartdiseaseandisafraidtocomeofftheirdrugs.

Plavixworksonanotheraspectofbloodclotting.Itinhibitsplateletaggregation.Whatyouaren’ttoldisthatplateletsareactivatedbycalcium.Thisdrugstopsplateletsfromfunctioningwhenthesimplestthingtodowouldbetocutbackoncalciumsupplementsandbalanceextracalciumwithmagnesium. Plavix,whichwasonlyapprovedbytheFDAin1997forminimaluseinunstableanginaandpeoplewhohadheartattackshaditsindicationsexpandedverybroadlyonlyafewyearsagoin2002.It’snowonthelonglistofdrugsthatanyonewithanysortofheartproblemisprescribed.Patientsarebeingtoldthatitwillpreventstrokeandheartattack. However,the“postmarketingsurveillance”hasfinallycaughtupwithit.Thesideeffects,whichnumberovereighty,andthedruginteractions,areaddingup.TheFDAinNovember2009warnedthatmanydrugsinterferewiththeactionofPlavix.Thesedrugs,sofar,includeNexium,Prilosec,Tagamet,Prozac,Sarafem,Symbyax,Luvox,Ticlid,Diflucan,Nizoral,VFEND,IntelenceandFelbatol. It’stheperfecttimefortheFDAtoannouncethattakingmagnesiumcouldprobablydoasgoodajobasPlavixwithoutthesideeffects.Butthat’sadreamscapescenarioandwillneverhappen.Modernmedicineisweddedtothestandardpracticeofmedicine:drugsandsurgery.Andunfortunatelyforunsuspectingmillionsofpatients,supplementingwithmagnesiumhasnopartinthatproduction.MagnesiumandBowelDiseaseMagnesiumdeficiencyandcalciumexcesscausethemusclesoftheintestinestocontractandnotrelax.Contractingandrelaxingoftheintestinesisthewaythatfoodmovesthroughfrommouthtoanus.Iftheintestinesarestuckinthecontractingphase,thebowelsslowdownandcauseconstipation.Thesymptomsofconstipationincludemalabsorptionofnutrients,abdominalpainandtoxicitysymptomslikeheadache,fogginess,dizziness,fatigueanddepression. However,it’snotallaboutconstipation.PainfulbowelspasmscommoninIBSdiarrheaandcolitiscanalsomeanamagnesiumdeficiency.Butthetypeofmagnesiumusedforthosesymptomsmustbenon‐laxativetransdermalmagnesiumorangstrommagnesium.SeethesectionTypesandDosageofMagnesiumandCalcium.MagnesiumforCystitisBladderspasmsaremadeworsebymagnesiumdeficiencyandcanmakeabladderinfectionfeellikeamedicalemergency.Theliningofthebladderhassmoothmusclessimilarlyaffectedbymagnesiumasanyothermuscle.Lackofmagnesiumdoesn’tcauseabladderinfectionbutifthesemusclesarecrampingitcanactuallymakeyouthinkyouhaveabladderinfectionandyoumaynot.

Evenwithallourmedicaladvanceswestilldon’tknowwhatcausesmigraines.Theyarethoughttobeduetoanimbalanceinbrainchemicalsthatcanleadtoinflammation.Thislow‐gradeinflammationcancausebrainbloodvesselstoswellandirritatenearbynervesandcausepain.However,whattheresearchersarenotconsideringisthatmagnesiumdeficiencywillmakethesmoothmusclesofbloodvesselsmoreirritableandsusceptibletoinflammation.Thesamethinghappenswithnerves.Inmagnesiumdeficiencynervecellsbecomemoreirritated.Itallmakessenseifyouconsidermagnesiumdeficiencyasanunderlyingtriggertomigraines.Andasyoureadinthemagnesiummiraclestoriesbelow,magnesiumcanhelpyougetridofmigraineheadachesforever.

ButSusanwasn'treallytakingallthatmuchmagnesium‐only700mg.Lessthansheprobablyneeded.Whensheconsultedme,Isuspectedthatherbodycellswerenotabsorbingallthemagnesiumcitrate.Therestwasleftcirculatinginthebloodstream,unabletopassthroughherkidneysintoherbladder.Iimmediatelytookheroffthemagnesiumcitrate.Thesymptomsallwentawayinafewdays.

Wethentriedangstrommagnesium.Thistypeofmagnesiumhasbeenbrokendownto5billionthofameterinwidth.Severaldayslatershefeltmuchbetter,hadnomoremagnesiumdeficiencysymptomsandaweeklaterherbloodworkshowedthathermagnesiumlevelswerefine–noexcessbuildup.

MAGNESIUMFORTHEATHLETEWhenyoureadaboutfamousathletesfromthepast,youdon’tgetthesensethattheywerefollowingahealthydietandlifestyle.Livinglargeasacelebrityoftenmeanseating,drinking,andpartyingtoexcess‐‘eat,drink,andbemerry’seemedtobetheirultimategoal.Addingtotheabuseonthebody,intensecompetitionledtotheuseandabuseofsteroiddrugs.InmyconsultingpracticeIseetheaftermathofyearsofsteroiduse–adrenalfatigue,obesity,diabetesandheartdisease.

Theageofprocessedfoodmadesomeathletesmoreawareofthelackofwholefoodsintheirdiet.We’restillinthemiddleofthewholefoodsmovementandallmannerofdietsarenowpromotedtoenhanceathleticperformance.Thesupplementindustry,whichisonlyabout30yearsold,alsobecameinvolvedinpromotingproductstoathletes.Idon’tknowenoughaboutalltheinsandoutsofsportssupplementstosayyeahorneighbutIdoknowaboutmagnesium.It’sthestartingplaceforenhancingathleticperformance.
