Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to NAMI New Orleans former Executive Director (1978-2010), Bea Piker; NAMI New Orleans former Board Treasurer (1978-2017), Fabio Canton; and NAMI New Orleans Founder Harold A. Martin, Jr. (awarded posthumously). NAMI New Orleans Board President, William ChuckCredo, III, and Vice President, Susan Norwood, were also presented with Outstanding Leadership Awards. Special thanks to guest speaker Mary Giliberti, CEO of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Thank You for Celebrating 40 Years of Service with NAMI New Orleans! Luminaries from across the nation were in attendance at NAMI New Orleans 40th anniversary celebration on

Friday, June 29th, aboard the Creole Queen Paddlewheeler. Guests enjoyed a picturesque two-hour

Mississippi River cruise, live music from Sullivan Dabney’s Muzik Jazz Band, and appearances from the

Mardi Gras Indian Queens. The sold-out event also featured a raffle and a silent auction with proceeds

benefitting NAMI New Orleans. Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to NAMI New Orleans former

Executive Director (1978-2010), Bea Piker; NAMI New Orleans former Board Treasurer (1978-2017), Fabio

Canton; and NAMI New Orleans Founder Harold A. Martin, Jr. (awarded posthumously). NAMI New Orleans

Board President, William “Chuck” Credo, III, and Vice President, Susan Norwood, were also presented with

A peer-led support group for adults whose lives

have been impacted by the loss of a loved one

Free One-On-One Education about Schizophrenia/Schizoaffective Disorder

NAMI New Orleans is now offering free education sessions for adults living with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder and/or their loved ones. Receive free resources, information, and practical suggestions for improving mental and physical health. Sessions are one hour in-person or 30 minutes over the phone. This program is made possible by a grant from Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

In Memoriam: Fabio Jesus Canton, 1944-2018

It is with great sadness that the family of Fabio Jesus Canton

announces his passing on Friday, July 20, 2018. A native of Merida,

Mexico; Fabio was born on February 20, 1944. He moved to the

United States at the age of 8 and was raised in the city of New Orleans.

In 2017, Fabio retired after a successful 51-year career as a CPA in the

New Orleans region. Fabio served on the NAMI New Orleans Board of

Directors since its inception in 1978. His service

with NAMI New Orleans led to him being chosen as

a recipient of the People's Health Champion Award

in 2015. Fabio is survived by his loving wife of 37

years, Georgia, and their children, grandchildren,

and great grandchildren. His legacy will live on at

NAMI New Orleans for years to come.

2018 NAMI Convention Highlights From June 27th - 30th, over 1,700 advocates from

across the nation convened at the Sheraton in

New Orleans for the 2018 NAMI Convention.

Participants learned about new research for better

treatments, early intervention efforts, and disease

development. NAMI New Orleans also provided 85

volunteers to assist with Convention efforts. Special

thanks to all those who helped us make the 2018

NAMI Convention a great success!

Monthly Mental Health First Aid

Training Courses Now Available Thanks to a generous grant from Elizabeth Boh, NAMI New

Orleans is now offering the 8-hour Mental Health First Aid

Training course for individuals working with adults or with

youth ages 12-18. Mental Health First Aid helps you assist

someone experiencing a mental health or substance-use related crisis.

Course participants learn risk factors, warning signs, and strategies on

how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Course

participants will be certified in Mental Health First Aid for three years.
