Head coach for the University of St. Thomas men’s basketball team since 2011 after serving 11 years as an assistant coach. Tauer’s record as a head coach is 105-20 (84%), one of the top winning percentages in all of college basketball. Tauer is a

Professor in the Department of Psychology at St. Thomas. In 2013 and 2015, Tauer was named MIAC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year and NABC West Region Coach of the Year, and in 2013 was named the Basketball Times National D-3 Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the University of St. Thomas Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.

During Tauer’s nineteen years playing and coaching at St. Thomas, UST has an overall MIAC record of 320-60 (84%), with 15 MIAC titles and 14 NCAA appearances. Over the past ten years, St. Thomas has won an unprecedented ten consecutive MIAC titles, made ten consecutive NCAA appearances, has an overall record of 251-42 (86%) and an MIAC record of 178-122 (89%). Over the past seven years, St. Thomas has the highest winning percentage in all of NCAA Men’s Basketball across Divisions I, II, and III, with a 181-27 (87%) record, including a 126-14 (90%) MIAC record. Tauer is the only person in MIAC history, and one of a small number of basketball coaches nationally to have played in, been an assistant coach, and been a head coach in NCAA Final Four competition.

In 2012-13 UST was ranked #1 in the country, advanced to the Final Four, and led the nation (400+ teams) in FG%, wins, and winning percentage, and was 2nd in the nation in assist-turnover ratio and 3-pt FG%. In 2008-09, UST was ranked #1 in the country in NCAA D-III and led the country in assist-turnover ratio. St. Thomas is consistently among the nation’s leaders in FG%, 3-point FG%, and assist-turnover ratio. In 2011, UST defeated four consecutive opponents ranked in the top 7 in the country on the way to the D-3 National Championship.

As a player, Tauer was an Honorable Mention All-American and GTE Academic All-American. Helped lead St. Thomas to the Final Four in 1993–94 and a school record 27 straight vic-tories in 1994-95. Scored over 1,000 points and previously held record at UST for 3-point field goals. Member of Cretin-Derham Hall State Championship teams in basketball and baseball, and named All-State, All-Metro, and Academic All-State in both sports.

This is Tauer’s 22nd year of directing his own camps. He has worked with several thou-sand youth players, many who have gone on to success at the high school and college level. Tauer earned a PhD in social psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, one of the top graduate programs in the country. Tauer conducts research on sport psy-chology, motivation, competition, cooperation, and goal-setting that has been published in top academic journals such as the Journal of Educational Psychology, the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Tauer is one of the only head basketball coaches in the nation with a Ph.D. in psychology.

Anderson Athletic Complex

Coach Keating is an assistant basketball coach at the University of St. Thomas where he works with defense, recruiting, game prepara-tion, video, and skill development. This will be Keating’s 15th year of working at Coach Tauer’s basketball camps. Keating was All-State and a Minnesota Mr. Basketball finalist at Cretin-Derham Hall. He scored 1,470 points in his college career, where he was an All-Region and All-MIAC forward who helped UST win back-to-back conference titles

and compile a 47–10 record, and has been instrumental in UST’s success during his five years on the coaching staff. “Mike Keating has an outstanding grasp of all aspects of the game of basketball.
