The Catholic is a citizen of two worlds. Chaminade High School, in training
youth to take its part in the future, must realize this duality and make its
education meet both gaols. The spiritual activities, under the watchful eye
of the Blessed Mother, are constantly giving the students opportunity to
develop a strong religious spirit. Various religious functions are in progress
throughout the school year . The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered daily,
the Sacrament of Penonce is available before and after school each day,
and there are speciol devotions during October, Lent, and May. In all these
activities, the role of Mary in man's spiritual life is given fullest recognition.
While busying itself with this religious troining, the school cannot forget
that our country needs to have sturdy leaders to insure its progress and
security for the future . I n addition, the student must be capable of earning
his living and supporting a family. To meet these ends, there is an effort to
impart instruction of the highest calibre in all fields of study proper to the
modern high school. Besides, an attempt is made to develop any special
talents the student hay have in the arts, in athletics, or in leadership. The
product of this education should be a strong, intelligent leader, ready to
dedicate his service to God and country.

Bro. Charles Opferman, S.M.
My Dear Graduates,
. You have finolly reached the pinnacle of your high school career . There remains only the awarding of the
diplomas before you take a step into the unknown future. Are you prepared for this step? For twelve long
years you have looked forward to the day when you would be "out of school." For twelve long years
your teachers have endeavored to instill into your hearts the love of God and the love of neighbor.
It is of great significance that you may count yourselves among the graduating classes of this Centenary
Year of the apparition of Our Blessed Mother at Lourdes in 1858. In a society, barely conscious of the
ills which assail it, Our Lady appea ls to you just as She appealed to the humble ma iden, Bernadette
Soubirous, one hundred years ago; "You must pray to God for sinners."
Already in the first grade of school you learned that "God made me to know Him, to love Him, and to
serve Him in this world in order to be happy with Him forever in the next." For no other reason were you
brought into this world, and for no other reason will future generations be created. How do you measure up to
th is obligation? Have you become we ll enough acquainted with the Mother of God to enable you to feel
secure on the path of life? If you find the world around you in a troubled, uncertain state, it is simply be·
cause others before you have not learned the real" reason for their existence. Th ey have kept God and Mary
out of their plans, and so it is now up to you to instill into other hearts, while finding your p lace in the
business world, the love of God and the love of neighbor.
Many of your graduating class who could have been with you on this happy occasion, a re already
serving God and Our Lady as other apostles in some seminary or religious order. But whether God wants
you to serve Him as a single layman, as a member of the married state, or as a priest or religious, may
you go forward with the deep conviction in your heart thot "You Can Change the World."
It is my wish and the wish of every member of the Chaminade Faculty that God and Our Blessed
Mother shower you with choicest graces and blessings throughout the rest of your life.
Sincerely yours,
Brother James Kilroy, S.M.

In his first season as head football coach, Mr. Ed Regan
proved to be a highly capable successor to " Fuzzy"
Faust. Mr. Regan has brought the Eagles back to the height
which they enjoyed for eleven years under Mr. Faust. Be
fore assuming the top position, Mr. Regan served as as
sistant coach in order to become acquainted with the
personnel. Ed is an alumnus of Chaminade. After four
years of service in the Marine Corps, Mr. Regan entered
Bowling Green University. In 1951 he returned to Chami
nade as a teacher and coach. Three years later he ac
cepted the position of head coach at Cleveland Holy Name.
Finally in 1956 he bacame assistant to " Fuzzy" Faust. To
Mr. Regan we wish more of this same success.

Under the able leadership of coach Tom Frericks,
the Eagle courtsters compiled a 13 win-8 loss rec
ord. The hoopsters ran off four straight victories be
fore they lost two down to-the-wire contests in . city
league competition. These hard luck defeats set the
pattern for the ill faded Eagles, as ' they lost five
city league games by a total of seventeen points.
Other defeats were inflicted by the mighty Middle
town Middies, a powerful St. Xavire quintet, and a
double overtime lost to Talawanda. The team dis
played some accurate shooting and fine teamwork
in their tough season . The high pOints of the season
were the trouncings of Troy, Kiser, and Fremont.
Throughout the season, the Eagles maintained their
praise and battled with the spirit and courage of
true Men of Chaminade.
Assistant Coach Ed Marrinan checks the scaring of the next opponent.
Head Coach Tam Frericks works aut same new patterns.

Mr. Vern Weber did an outstanding or
ganizational job in his first year as golf
coach . The Eagles played fifteen matches,
coming out on top in eleven of
them . In the City League they won six
out of ~ine, which was good enough to
merit third place. This year's team, al
though they won no championships, im
proved as the season progressed. At the
Tri-State Meet in Hamilton, they finished sixth out of 28 teams. The high point
came during the last week of the season,
when they crushed a good Fairview team
14-2. A team score of 336 earned
Chaminade a seventh place among the
28 teams in the District Meet.

Chaminade's 1958 tennis team, under the
able leadership of Coach Don Frericks,
ended this year's season with a 13-4 record . The Eagles placed third in the
city competition, having lost two matches
during league play. The highpoint of the
season was when Tom Scheper and
Dave Dahm swept the district doubles
title and went on to reach the sem i-finals
in the state tournament. Next years team
should possess the experience needed to
send it all the way as only two regulars
are being lost through graduation.

Champs again! This season's baseballers represented Cham
inade in true Eagle fashion. Coach Tom Frericks' boys com
piled a successful sixteen and two record. Not only were the
Eagles City League Co-Champs, but they also captured the
District Title and advanced to the Cincinnati Regionals. Here
they played in major league style at Crosley Field, defeating
Springfield in the afternoon 5-4, and then bowing to Cincinnati Elder, who subsequently won the State Title, in a
7-6 thriller under the lights. The Eagles played some bril
liant ball as attested by their fine record. Although certain individuals performed outstandingly, their success was a team
effort. Captain and Centerfielder Bill Kennedy led the team in batting with a .430 average. Ron Lauterbach, Fred Ehrens
berger, and Gary Finnegan provided the scoring punch . They batted .345, .330, and .320 respectively while producing the
long ball. Senior Bill Burgmeier, juniors Tom Albers, Dick
Beckerich, Jack Unverferth, and sophomore Tom Maurer also contributed a fair share to the Eagles' success. Senior Ted
Ling and junior John Bistrek led the pitching corps with seven
victories apiece. The Eagles' fortunes in years to come should
be well in hand, as the nucleus of another championship team
will be returning.

A student attends Chaminade to develop his abilities both as a leader
and a Catholic. The role religion plays in the life of the school is obvi
ous. Daily Mass is a part of the Chaminade school day, just as is
after-school Confession . Other important religious actjvities of the
school year are the Mass of the Holy Spirit, weekly Benediction during
Lent and the month of May, the Rosary Rallies, and the Underclass
men's Retreat. Highlighting the completion of four years at Chaminade,
the seniors receive the privilege of attending a closed Retreat at Mount
Saint John.

The most far-reaching organization in the school is the Chaminade So
dality. This active organization is entrusted with the task of encourag
ing the student body to live a full Christian life under the auspices of
Mary. It is the Sodality's responsibility to see that every phase of stu
dent life - intellectual, cultural, social, and athletic - is permeated
with the Spirit of Christ, Son of Mary. The Sodality's theme for the
year has been " The Student and the Parish ." In order to develop
parish-minded students the Sodality sponsored a Study Day and Study
Evening and invited the students of St. Joseph's and Julienne to share
in the benefits.

The Chaminade Marching Band started its season with an appearance at the County Fair. In addition to its half-time shows at all the football games, the band marched in the Holy Name Parade, the CYO Youth
Rally, and The U.D. Homecoming Parade. The band this year played the popular hits "With a Little Bit of Luck" and "Around the World." It also repeated the script CHS and saluted the Alumni, the Catholic
Youth Organization, and the United Nations. With only eight seniors graduating, the band can look forward to bigger and better things
from this, its peak year.

Something new was added this year. For the first time, Chaminade
had a secondary marching unit on the field. The Drum and Bugle Corps
and the Rifle Drill Team performed at most of the football games, the
fairgrounds, all the parades, and put a show on for the rally for the
championship games. These units, comprised entirely of freshmen,
spent many long hours during the summer and after school perfecting
their routines. Under the leadership of Brother Trageser and Mr. James
Wolf, they learned qUickly and left expectations of better things to come.

L~ST YE7'4R WAS 20 YEARS AGO!
The world is moving at incredible speed these days. We are living in an age of unprecedented and almost unbelieveable growth.
Methods have advanced 20 years almost overnight. Ideas that only a short time ago seemed fantastic, are now in actual use in industry, finance, service, and government. Gigantic strides are being made in medicine, science, and engineering. Yet many of these which were unthought of yesterday will be outmoded by graduation day!
An era of astonishing development beckons to the 1958 graduate. Never before in history has there been such an insatiable demand for trained minds as today.
It is from educational institutions that the alert, creative, imaginative brains needed to keep pace with these ever-challenging, ever-expanding demands of progress must come.
Your diploma is your admission into this exciting new world of opportunity. Your education at Chaminade High School, plus your desire for continuing selfimprovement, will enable you to assume your responsibilities in the uncharted years ahead.
