HISTORICAL RESU!\'lE

Chaminadc, know n as Catholic High during the scholasti c yea r 1927- 1928, now com pletes the second year of its h isto ry, the fi rst as a four yea r high school. ' In these two yea rs so many uniform ly successful activities claimed th e attention of the student body a nd general public tha t our li mited space allows but the shortes t of summa r ies.

Four hundred and fifty pupil s we re prese nt for the Solemn Mass at E mm a nu el's Church which mark ed the inception o f a school which has already been recognized as the outsta nding high school of Dayton. On that occasion Reverend Lawrence A.. Yeske. S. 1\1[', predicted the policy o f the new instituti on.

"Catholic youth ,viII attend th is hig h school a nd wi ll be taught science, lit erature and comme rce a s completely as anywhere else. \ Ve y ield to none when it comes to prowess in inte llectual pursuits. \\le also realize that a healthy body must house a health y mind and wi ll encourage athletic competiti on for aiL"

"But above ph ysical and menta l development we will st ress the need of moral development. of character for mation. In yea rs to com e you are to be leaders in civic and business endeavor. leaders in Ca tholic enterprise a nd thought. As a preparation fo r such responsibili ties you must be t rained to patience and obedience. to serious application and study. to self control a nd discipline."

Tn the light of these remarks we review the scholas tic. a thletic and social ach ievements of the school. From th e scholastic standpoint it is worthy of comment th at twenty-four ind ividuals ha ve acted in the capacity of rep~r t e r s and special feature wr iters for the local newspapers.

Scholastic competition. oft en fo unded upon so rdid comme rcial motives. has bee n ge nera lly disrega rded. However. Bernard F ocke, pres ident of the graduati ng cla ss , brought hono r to hi s school by placing t hird in a state-wide contest foste red by the Ohio Federation o f \\' omen's Clubs. His discussion of "\Vhat Mak es a Hom e .Mode rn" was placed in com peti ti on with 30.000 essays.

Dramatic Art was a n educa tional medium for fifty-t wo boys. Unde r the direction of }\r[r. D. C. Ashton four plays have been staged: "Seventeen." "Turn to the Ri ght." "Come Seven" and "The Ye ll ow Tria ng le" . The last m entioned producti on won local dramatic honors for Chaminade and a trip to )Jew York for the cast as participants in the Dav id Belasco Little Th ea tre Tournament.

In the fieJd of athl etics , winning teams have been developed in football , basketball . golf. tennis . sw imming. track a nd bowling. I ntramural leagues in basketball and bowling ha ve contriLuted to a realizati on of th e id eal "athl etics for aiL"

The basketball tea m of 1928-'29. under the able direction of 1\1 r . \V ill iam Blake, successor to Harry Solimano. reached th e final round in the Southweste rn Sectional Tournament. 1n golf. Chaminade won two loca l championships and at present ho lds the State championship. One week ago Captai n Edward Hamant won local ind ividual honors in this sport.

Tn sw imming and th e cross country run Ch aminade rank s respecti vely, second and third. Th e records ind ica te that in eve ry sport the school has more t han held its own again st the sti ffes t Class A competition in the sta te.

Th e Dads' Club and Pa rent-T eacher Association have sponso red innum erable social events incl uding two banquets a t th e E ng in eers Cl ub the fir st year and two at th e Hotel Gibbons thi s year. Among the out sta nding spea kers secu red for these occasions were: Paul C. Stetson. George H. Trader. Charl es J. ll rennan. Roland \V. Baggott , Robert C. Pa tterson, Harry C. Baujaun. Paul Schenck and Pau l Brees. The Coun try Club was th e sce ne of the Juni or P rom on Jun e 1st. 1928. and of the Senior Fare well on ~Iay 29th, 1929. Se"e ral ca rd parti es found more th a n 500 peopl e in attendance.

]n a ll th ese activities th e graduates of today took a leading part. The sodality, o rchestra. school paper, art club a nd seve ra l scholas tic o rga nizati ons owe their inception, d irect ion and inspiration to th e Class o f '29. These ach ievements will endu re as their monu-1l1 ent and as a worthy model fo r fu ture senior classes.

DA YTON LITTLE THEATRE TROPHY (An emblem of local supremacy.)

DRAMATIC ART

T he fouf product ions of th e Chaminade Dramatic Club ha ve brough t more fame to th e school than any other extra-cu rricular activity. "Seventeen" was the first play staged by Qur

. Th espian s. Concerning this comedy, De\ Vitt Nicholas says. "Very interesting and most amusing was the perform ance of Booth T arkington's 'Seven tee n' . The play has bee n voted as one of the fu nnies t o f th e Tarkington s to ri es o f youth. so t he scrip t was to be taken fo r g ranted. But not onl y did these youngsters ha ve a good play in itself , th ey g ave a ve ry good show. And, added to everything elsc, was the a mu sing situation of a n all-boy cast : which mea ns that the 'Baby-talk Lady' a nd a ll the o th er 'young ladies' were boys, disport ing themselves in handsome \V ias and fe minine fi nery-eve rything except voice, De\Vitt I\shton, who directed the piece deser ves sincere credit."

Another critic, A. . ]~a ny , call ed " Turn to th e Right" , "an ambitious production s taged with a n unusual exactness of deta il a nd enacted in considerably more than a merely adequate way. It was rather a tremendous under taking, especiall y in the scen ic equipment. req uirin g four heavy settings. All th ese ancl th e movements of th e acto rs there in were well ma naged,"

The t hird production '; Come Seven" eli cits favo rable com ment from James :Mui r . "So successfull y did the members o f the cast play their parts that both dialect and characterization were ve ry sa ti s fa ctory. Th e den izens of Birmingham's black belt were so accurately photographed that in som e cases they see med to have stepped right out of th e pages o f one of Me Cohen's Sa turday Evening P os t sto ri es ."

fmp rovi ng with each production the Dra matic Club se lected ;'T he Yellow Triangle", by Geo rge Sutton . for presentation in the local Dra matic Tournam ent. It is well know n t hat Chaminade was the unanimous choice of th e judaes to represent Day ton in the David Belasco Little Theatre Tournament. And how well the Chaminade P layers kept their trus t is ev idenced by thi s telegram frOI11 \Valter Hartw ing , manager of the T ournam ent, ';Your Players a l'e a credit to your City and SchooL Their perfonnance of 'The Yell ow Triangl e' was se nsa ti onal fo r a g roup of their age. I co ngratulate you."
