Economic Development Update

The TechCelerator@State College developed as a partnership of seven local economic development partners housed at

one location in Innovation Park allowing for easy access and a one-stop point of contact for clients. The partnership includes Ben Franklin Technology Partners, CCIDC, Innovation Park at Penn State, Penn State Office of Technology Management, Penn State Small Business Development Center, Venture Forum and Ben Franklin Transformation Business Service Network.

At the April 6, 2012 CCIDC Board of Directors meeting, Steve Brawley introduced two of his colleagues from Ben Franklin Technology Partners to provide an update on the TechCelerator@State College. Roger Dagen, currently the Director of Business Development, will be retiring at the end of May. Roger has been a long-time valuable employee with Ben Franklin Technology; we wish him well in his retirement. Don McCandless was introduced as Roger’s successor and brings a strong background of experience in the business community including his service as former President/CEO at Restek Corporation. He is excited to be on board and believes the atmosphere surrounding the TechCelerator is a good indication of the energy being stimulated.

Roger provided information on several current and upcoming initiatives of the TechCelerator@StateCollege. Suite 201 has been upgraded to serve as a workspace for their Boot Camps with wireless internet service and a wireless printer. Ben Franklin will be providing services to all the incubator tenants. On March 13th they presented “Research to Start Ups” for Penn

State Faculty. As a result of the program being over-subscribed, it will be offered again on April 18th. On April 10th, their initial four week boot camp concluded. This Boot Camp was open to Penn State Faculty and included six or seven participants who met weekly for 90 minute sessions. A more intense eight week Boot Camp, open to the community at large, begins April 24. By its conclusion, the TechCelerator’s goal is having six people ready to start their own businesses. Those chosen to participate in this exciting opportunity will receive up to $1,000 toward professional service fees (legal and accounting), and will have the chance to compete for $10,000 to get their business started. Business mentoring from Ben Franklin’s Transformation Business Services Network and Penn State’s Small Business Development Center staff will be available at no cost. For additional information about future Boot Camps or the TechCelerator Program, please contact David Jordan at 865-1862 or [email protected] .

Steve Brawley highlighted changes to the first floor lobby which include staffing in the lobby to assist visitors to their destination. The lobby has been upgraded to be more welcoming and encourage visitors and incubator members to interact. On the second floor, the TechCelerator plans to renovate the existing cafeteria space which is underutilized in a training/meeting room that will be available for all members of the Technology Center. The 221 Conference Room now has teleconferencing capabilities and Steve encouraged making use of the technology available.

In the short time since its launch, the TechCelerator has provided many valuable resources to the existing incubator tenants and members of the community wishing to learn more about developing their business ideas, building a business and entrepreneurship.
