The ChamberLine 3 Message from the President……...
Dear Members:
The beginning of June certainly felt like the new April with many cool and rainy days, yet with July’s soaring
temperatures there is no question that we are all in the midst of those “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.”
Granted I was only six years old when Nat King Cole’s lyrics peaked at #6 on the Billboard, it is a song that
still defines summer for me. Memories of sitting on the Robert Moses Causeway with the black top sizzling
from the hot summer sun, bobbing in the waves at the Long Island beaches until our lips were purple and
watching our mother frantically search for way too “ripe” sea creatures in the back of the station wagon are
all brought back to life whenever I hear this song.
Whether it is sandy beaches, family reunions or the simple pleasures of catching fireflies, summer is the time
to explore and perhaps lay back a little from the daily routines of everyday life. Long summer days allow for
families and friends to share time around picnic tables and barbeques, cultivating memories. As business
people we might find the four walls of our offices and shops curbing the opportunity for us to have a true
summer experience (whatever that definition might be…) Taking time off, travel expenses, or scheduling the
family’s time together can bottleneck the best made plans.
While the RACoC might not be able to facilitate the ideal summer vacation out on Cape Cod, we can connect
you with a wealth of summertime experiences right in your own back yard. Check out this newsletter for
Chamber sponsored events, our website, as well as our 2012-2013 Visitors’ Guide, and the Dutchess County
Tourism and Rhinebeck Community Forum websites for memory making summertime events.
So have a great summer and remember to...
“Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You'll wish that summer could always be here”
Vicki Haak, President

The ChamberLine 6 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Founded in 1963, Daytop Village is one of the oldest not-for-profit substance abuse treatment centers in the U.S.
Over the years, its mission and focus have adjusted to deal with changing patterns in alcohol and drug addiction.
Today, the dramatic rise in prescription drug use is proving to be one of the most alarming trends in the field of
substance abuse.
Prescription “pill mills” and “doctor-shopping” are the buzz words of a new drug era where thousands of people
are turning into junkies addicted to popular opiates like Hydrocodone (sold under the brand name Vicodin) and
Oxycodone (sold under the brand name Oxycontin). Oftentimes, clients report that their addictions began as a re-
sult of being prescribed painkillers to treat ongoing injuries.
Daytop, like many other agencies, is increasingly treating clients whose primary addiction is to prescription medi-
cation. Daytop is seeing this trend across the board at its various locations, including in Dutchess County, where
Daytop operates three residential centers – Fox Run, Meadow Run and Manor House on its bucolic campus in
Rhinebeck.
Daytop also runs centers in Sullivan, Rockland and Westchester counties, as well as in Long Island and in all five
boroughs of New York City.
Operating one of the largest network of outpatient services in the state, Daytop is in a unique position to help raise
awareness about the prescription pill epidemic. That issue will take center stage at Daytop's annual Strawberry
Festival, held this year on Sunday, Aug. 19 along Madison Avenue in Manhattan. The high-profile festival, featur-
ing bands, entertainment, food and merchants runs from 11 am to 6 pm.
Now in its 18th year, festival organizers called it the Strawberry festival after a state politician once remarked in a
committee meeting, “the day addicts are cured is the day strawberries grow on Madison Avenue.”
Since its founding, Daytop has helped turn around the lives of 200,000 individuals and their families. It has
enjoyed broad support and over the years, counting Nancy Reagan, Mary Tyler Moore and Shirley MacLaine
as former spokeswomen.
Internationally, Daytop has established treatment centers in over 60 countries worldwide and serves as the exclu-
sive representative of the U.S. State Department in helping to train substance abuse counselors and establish the
"Therapeutic Community Treatment Model" in Asia, South America and Europe. For over 30 years, Daytop has
led the Worldwide Federation of Drug Treatment Centers.
Locally, Daytop takes an active role with staff members and clients performing community service for the Town of
Rhinebeck, Chamber of Commerce, The Center for Performing Arts, the Winnakee Foundation, Wildenstein’s
Trust, and Mills Mansion. Daytop also provides shuttle service between Ulster and Dutchess counties.
If you would like to donate, please make checks payable to Daytop Village Foundation, Inc., and mail to Daytop
Village, 104 W. 40th St., New York, NY 10018, attention: business development. For more information, or to be-
come a sponsor of Daytop's Strawberry Festival, contact Kim Baker at 845-516-448-5717 or Olivier Gibbons at
