How to Lead & Succeed When It Matters MostHow do you take command amid chaos and operate at peak performance despite risks and the pressures of leadership?

According to Jake Wood—former Marine Sniper and Co-founder and CEO of the all-veteran, all-volunteer disaster response organization, Team Rubicon—it’s about preparing a high-impact team, analyzing and prioritizing your targets, making effective decisions, and then taking action.

In his just-published, groundbreaking book on high-stakes leadership, Take Command, Wood outlines what it takes to lead and be a first responder in businesses these days. As the introductory cover notes:

While most of our jobs don’t involve leading a tour of Marines through an ambush, or rushing into a relief zone just decimated by a hurricane, in today's fast-paced, hyper-competitive business environment, we are ALL on the front lines. And in an entrepreneurially-minded world where technology is constantly reinventing how we work, global competition is fierce, and industries are being disrupted overnight, success requires a new kind of leadership.

We’re excited to hear Wood share his hard-learned lessons in leadership and teamwork from the battlefield and disaster zone at the Chamber’s 127th Annual Meeting on January 20, 2015. Join us to learn how to apply

them to your professional, business, and community life.

Plus, research is suggesting a boost in holiday spending this year, so why not make exploring new local shops and dis-covering new favorite small businesses a part of the seasonal fun? National promotions around Small Business Saturday, November 29—the day after Black Friday—remind us to get out and visit the artisans, unique shops, and mom-and-pop businesses in our community.

“You don’t have to search high and low to find things locally for gifts and household needs, even unique items,” noted Amy Ruis, an entrepreneur owning Art of the Table on Wealthy Street and co-owning Aperitivo in the Downtown Market. “It really is about supporting local people who own shops and spreading pockets of activity that attract people to a neighborhood or area.”

A recent Buy Nearby Campaign study showed that if Michiganders switched just one in 10 purchases from an out-of-state merchant to a local retailer, they would add $900 million in increased economic activity and almost 7,500 new jobs. Converting one in five purchases doubles that effect. Plus, roughly half of every dollar spent locally goes right back into the Michigan economy, translating into $2.5 billion additional wages for those 7,500 new workers created.

“Local retailers are job providers which drive the multiplier effect,” noted Jill Wallace, chief marketing and communications officer at Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids, who is looking forward to expanding retail sales with their first furniture store opening in January 2015 at their 54th St. and Division St. location.

High-end fashion retailer Lee & Birch plans to be among the Chamber members welcoming local shoppers. Join them for a December 4 Uptown Holiday Shop Hop in Grand Rapids and a holiday open house on November 21 at their Grand Haven store.

Nearly 450 business leaders, elected officials, and partnering organizations filled out the crowd at this year’s West Michigan Policy Forum, held at the end of September. Among them were 120 CEOs and 120 vice presidents representing 47 cities as well as statewide representation from all but one region of Michigan. While West Michigan boasted the largest showing with 309 attendees, there was strong turn out from the South Central Michigan, Detroit Metro, Northwest Michigan, and Southwest Michigan as well as participants from as far as the Upper Peninsula.

Not only was the Policy Forum well attended and well represented, the event garnered excellent media coverage with more than 3.7 million media views across the state and many social media mentions.

With 41 speakers and hard-hitting sessions covering everything from connecting students to careers to growing an entrepreneurial start-up state, as well as term limits and poverty issues, the 2014 West Michigan Policy Forum set the tone for moving Michigan forward. Participant responses during the forum indicated just what the policy priorities should be (see chart below).

Many thanks to all the sponsors, speakers, attendees, committee organizers and staff who made this year’s event possible…and praise worthy!

MEMBERS In The Spotlight

Eric and Kim Pearson share their mutual pride in Bill & Paul’s Sporthaus—both functional and fashionable since 1961.

Bill Pearson, Eric’s father, originally established the business 53 years ago to supply local skiers with quality gear and apparel. Today, the family-owned business continues the tradition from its East Paris Ave. location.

“Bill & Paul’s specializes in ski, snowboard, backpacking, kayaking, and travel gear and clothing. We also sell car top rack and boxes, which we install for free. We have state of the art ski and snowboard-tuning equipment and we rent skis,” explained Vice President Kim Pearson.

Eric Pearson, company president, and his wife, Kim, love working with people. “It is so rewarding to work with families to help them pursue an active outdoor lifestyle. Whether they shred up the mountain or walk slowly down a trail, we enjoy listening to the stories about their adventures and travels,” Kim said. “Retail offers a wide variety of experiences beyond simply buying and selling merchandise. You get to work with different people every day—customers, employees, and vendors.”

Recently named one of Outdoor USA Magazine’s 2014 Top 100 Retailers, the Pearsons are savvy and experienced business owners who pay close attention to current market trends. “Retail is a constantly changing industry. You need to be willing to learn, adapt and change to survive,” advised Kim Pearson.

Bill & Paul’s Sporthaus has been a long-time Chamber member. “Bill Pearson joined way back when,” stated Kim. “We felt it was important to take advantage of the benefits that the Chamber has to offer, especially the resources available for business growth.”

“Eric and I appreciate the opportunity to keep informed about legislative issues that affect our business in general,” she added. “The Chamber helps us stay informed and up to date, as well as compliant.”

Nikki Gillette, owner of clothing and accessories boutique Lee & Birch, has conducted business since December 2007 with stores in Grand Rapids and Grand Haven. Partner Kristin Nipke, joined in 2012. The 100-percent woman-run store features apparel and accessories from premium brands such as Hudson, Ag Jeans, Dl 1961, Gypsy 05, Emu Australia, and others. Jewelry from local designers along with trendy handbags, scarves, and hats round out the variety of choices.

“Lee & Birch caters to fashionistas in their thirties and up with statement pieces along with wardrobe staples,” Gillette explained. “We offer personal styling to each of our customers. Whether you’re looking to transform your entire wardrobe or find a top to match an existing piece from your closet, our team is there to help. We will work with each customer one-on-one to find what styles work best for her body and lifestyle.”

On her role at Lee & Birch, Gillette noted: ”I love working one-on-one with customers and meeting new people, empowering my staff, and having something different on my plate every day. It never gets boring! My favorite part of the business is the buying and merchandising. It’s exciting to see all of the new trends and buying specifically for my customers, and then merchandising it when it arrives in store.”

Gillette recently relocated the store from downtown Grand Rapids to the Uptown business area. A Chamber member since 2011, she is highly appreciative of the support she received when re-opening the store there. “The Chamber has helped in promoting our business; the main examples being promoting the re-opening of our new location and distributing coupons in their member welcome packets.”

Governor Unveils MICHIGAN WORK READY COMMUNITY Initiative

Surrounded by West Michigan education and business leaders, Governor Rick Snyder launched the Michigan Work Ready Community (MiWRC) Initiative at a news conference held at Gentex Corporation headquarters in Zeeland on September 22.

Designed to encourage businesses to prefer the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) in their hiring efforts, the MiWRC Initative gives Michigan counties a frame-work to validate the trainability and employability of their workforce and connects individuals to resources to obtain the nationally-recognized certificate. According to advocates, the Initiative includes evaluating the number of current, transitioning, and emerging members of the workforce with skills verified by the NCRC and “WorkKeys” assessments.

“This program is the right move for our state. It provides a universal system of assessing workers’ skills and abilities for employers as well as promoting workers’ development and improvement.”

The NCRC is a nationally-recognized credential that recognizes an individual’s trainability and foundational employability skills. Find out more about it and the MiWRC Initiative at www.miworkready.org or contact MiWRC at [email protected] or 616.336.2393.

“The Michigan Work Ready Community Initiative is another step toward improving the quality of the work-force in Michigan,” Governor Snyder said.

PERIODICAL POSTAGE

PAID GRAND RAPIDS, MI111 Pearl St. NW | Grand Rapids, MI 49503

On December 5, the Chamber will be paying special tribute to outgoing state legislators in honor of their support of the West Michigan business community—and we’ll be welcoming West Michigan’s newly elected legislators as they launch their service to Michigan.

We hope you take this opportunity to thank our legislators for their hard work moving Michigan moving forward. Over the last four years, our legislators have repealed burdensome, job-killing taxes—like the Michigan Business Tax and the Personal Property Tax—and cut 1,500 outdated rules and regulations.

As a result, Michigan has bounced back from the recession faster

than any other state—encouraging free enterprise and allowing small businesses to grow, expand, innovate and hire more Michiganders. Since the last election, Michigan has created nearly 250,000 private sector jobs.

In addition to saluting the service of our legislators, we’ll be joined by John Feehery of Quinn Gillespie Communications, a leading pundit and frequent commentator on the political landscape, who will provide a post-election commentary. John is widely quoted around the country and often seen on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News Channel. We’re looking forward to his analysis of the general elections from across the country… and what it means for Michigan.
