Chamber Review
June 2016 SHOP LOCAL FIRST wwwCentralPascoChambercom
It has been my pleasure and a privilege to serve as your President this year The
Chamber is an outstanding organization that has a long and distinguished 41-year
history supporting businesses in Central Pasco
As I reflect back on my term I would like to share some of our accomplishments this
past year A strategic plan was created to bring more value to our members over the
next 5 to 10 years Our vision and mission statements were updated to support the
strategic plan The merger with Pasco Hernando Hispanic Chamber was finalized
Wednesday Morning Networking attendance has increased to where at times there is
standing room only The Land OrsquoLakes Spring Music Festival and Business Expo
was created in response to numerous community members asking for a signature
event These undertakings would not have been possible without the support of the
Board of Directors Committee Chairs Event Coordinator and many dedicated
volunteers
In closing I want to thank the Executive Board Board of Directors Committee
Chairs and many dedicated members for your support over the past year I wish the
incoming Board continued success and remember the strength of this Chamber is
you the member If you want the Chamber to continue to be relevant and to have a
voice it is up to you to make sure you actively participate and encourage others to do
so as well

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day
This yearrsquos theme for national ldquoTake Our Daughters and Sons to Work Dayrdquo was Sparking Aha Moments On April 28 2016 the Clerk amp Comptrollerrsquos Office joined with many of its community partners namely the Public Defender State Attorney Court Ad-ministration Supervisor of Elections Pasco Sheriffrsquos Office and Pasco Fire Rescue Children from all the agencies had a wonderful day learning about the work of the Clerk amp Comptrollerrsquos Office and the other local government offices and departments In the late afternoon youngsters were invited to shadow their parents and guardians in their respective work areas This was a truly memorable experience for every child Volunteers and presenters provided great inspiration and excitement as the children met local leaders explored their own interests and dreamed of their future careers
PASCO SHERIFFrsquoS OFFICE NEWSLETTER
If you havenrsquot noticed itrsquos hot outside Now is the time families begin making their way to pools and bodies of water across our county and state in an attempt to cool off We want everyone to enjoy those moments but we also want you to be safe We cannot say this enough to parents and caregivers Please take all the safety measures possible to protect children from the dangers that lurk in and
around the pool or any body of water Now is the time to review ndash and improve if needed ndash water safety habits Florida is among the top states in the nation in relation to drowning deaths for children under 5 years old About 1000 children drown each year in the United States Between 2011 and 2013 200 children under the age of 5 died as a result of accidental drowning in Florida Of those two were from Pasco County In all 83 Pasco County
residents ndash children and adults ndash have died from drowning from 2004-2013 Florida Statute Chapter 515 the Residential Pool Safety Act requires a number of safety barriers A portion of that statute reads
The barrier must be at least 4 feet high on the outside
The barrier may not have any gaps openings indentations protrusions or structural components that could allow a young child to crawl under squeeze through or climb over the barrier
The barrier must be placed around the perimeter of the pool and must be separate from any fence wall or other enclosure surrounding the yard unless the
fence wall or other enclosure or portion thereof is situated on the perimeter of the pool is being used as part of the barrier and meets the barrier require-ments of this section
The barrier must be placed sufficiently away from the waters edge to prevent a young child or medically frail elderly person who may have managed to pene-
trate the barrier from immediately falling into the water
FAQs Regarding Write-In Candidates May I Write-In Mickey Mouse for President The short answer is yes but your vote for Mickey wont be tabulated Florida Statutes 103022 requires write-in candidates to file an oath with the Department of State to become a duly qualified write-in Until Mickey files the necessary paperwork votes for Mickey Mouse do not count and neither do votes for you Goofy or Superman In Presidential election years I am frequently asked questions about write-in candidates and what happens to the votes for write-ins What you really need to know about write-in candidates however is that in order for a write-in vote to be tabulated the candidate must become a duly qualified write-in by filing the necessary paperwork In the case of the President and Vice President the paperwork is filed with the Florida Department of State Incidentally the statute also applies to presidential candidates who have withdrawn or suspended their campaigns Techni-cally a candidate who has suspended their campaign is still considered active and could reinstate their campaign at any time but unless they choose to become a qualified write-in candidate a written-in vote for them is not a valid vote In accordance with Florida law all votes for duly qualified candidates are tabulated and reported accordingly I am often asked by the media how many votes Mickey Mouse received but we neither tabulate nor keep count of those So if you are considering exercising your right in the November General Election by casting your ballot with a write-in candidate for president you certainly have the option of writing-in the famous mouse or the candidate that didnt get the national convention nomination But if you want your vote to be tabulated a list of all qualified candidates (including the write-in candidates) is available at the Department of State Divi-sion of Elections website httpdoselectionsmyfloridacomcandidates A qualified write-in candidate is indicated by (WRI) behind their name Part of being ElectionReady includes knowing your choices ahead of arriving at the polling place including the qualified write-in candidates for all offices Its incumbent on the voter to do their write-in candidate homework beforehand as we have been advised by the Department of State that its inappropriate to provide a list at the polling place While it may feel personally gratifying to write-in Mickey Mouse or Goofy please remember that while you are doing that you are actually allowing others to select the leaders of this country for you As always my staff and I stand ready to assist if you have further questions regarding write-in candidates or being ElectionReady

The day has finally arrived when the Class of 2016 will stride across the stage leaving behind childhood and entering into adulthood Graduation day is upon us Think of how much has changed in your life approaching this day When these students started kindergarten there was no Facebook YouTube Xbox One PlayStation Portable Twitter Nintendo Wii iPhone or iPad Today our graduating seniors probably canrsquot imagine how they could function without some of these items Many things will continue to change in their lifetime My hope is that the Pasco County Schools has prepared them to embrace new ideas to accept change and to succeed in college career and life Graduation Day is the culmination of 13 years of dedicated study All the books they have read classes they have attended papers they have written nights they have spent studying and exams they have taken paid off I hope Graduation Day is a day filled with pride celebration and recognition for each member of the class of rsquo16 Their future will provide additional milestones like landing a job graduating from college or getting married I hope that each and every one of you achieves your goals with honor and integrity It may not always be easy but if you establish goals and tackle obstacles with determination and dignity each one of you will be satisfied that you did your best Thatrsquos success I wish each member of the Class of 2016 success as responsible and productive citizens Congratulations Kurt S Browning is superintendent of Pasco County Schools

Dear Pasco County Schools Class of 2016hellip By Kurt S Browning
