Program Notes

Chamber Choir & ConCert Choir • april 29, 2017

Welcome to the Oklahoma Madrigal Project. We have fused Renaissance and Baroque madrigals onto the narrative framework of Oklahoma! in an abridged concert setting creating an experimental performance hybrid that we hope you find compelling. It requires an extended suspension of belief and an open mind, but listeners who are open to the journey should be able to find parallels between the madrigal texts and the storyline’s drama when the madrigals appear.

We chose a hybrid of musical and madrigal for several reasons. First, madrigals are an important genre of study for all singers and ensemble members. Second, Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals have seen a surge in appearances at the major American opera houses in the last half-decade, providing performance opportunities in the genre of Broadway musicals that are conducive to the classical technique taught at most music schools. Third, madrigals can be quite short in nature (between one and two minutes), and a successive stream of very short songs can be awkward from a programming standpoint. For this reason, finding a larger narrative umbrella undre which the madrigals could be contextualized seemed like an interesting project, so we chose Oklahoma!, primarily for its varied characters that provide romantic angst, dueling bravados, flirtatious lust, etc., but also for its light-hearted comedy and rousing choral numbers. Our story has been shortened to make room for the madrigals, which appear throughout the drama providing a sort of ‘Greek Chorus’ commentary on the goings-on.

Another draw to Oklahoma! was the dream ballet that happens in the Broadway show and movie, in which Laurey ‘dreams’ about her romantic entanglements with Curly and Jud (induced by the smelling salts she purchases). The dream is creatively depicted through dancing in the original shows, and we thought it would be an interesting challenge to express Laurie’s dream and emotions with madrigals instead of dance.

The Oklahoma Madrigal Project has been challenging to put together and we have been making adjustments all along the process, with the students providing input and ideas. We have enjoyed the challenge and value the fact that a rich academic setting such as ours at DePaul allows us to experiment freely across musical genres and to flex our creative muscle. We hope you enjoy tonight’s interesting musical journey.

-Eric Esparza(Approximate running time: 90 minutes with one intermission).
