Michael Trottier is a senior associate of the Conference Board of Canada. He specializes in examining global trends in the ways the status quo is being challenged in light of the social, technological and economic realities confronting all governments.
He will discuss how challenging the status quo inevitably means disrupting sacred-cow programs or services, information technology or business processes, human resource practices and approval and accountability systems.
He will give examples of what he calls the emerging status quo, new ways of doing business that are emerging from the global laboratory. He will discuss five key success factors:
i. Ensure senior leadership commitment without which the status quo cannot be challenged andchange cannot happen.
ii. Present a business case for change that demonstrates a broad understanding of the financial, political, technical, human resources, business and customer pressures and impacts.
iii. Use examples from the global laboratory that help define and describe the nature of thechange as well as the benefits.
iv. Anticipate common impediments such as regulatory approval periods, procurement cycles, accounting processes and -- perhaps most importantly - people who are resistant to change.
v. Build momentum and value by identifying a series of quick wins that can be achieved early.
Michael Trottier, Senior Associate, Executive Networks, The Conference Board of Canada
Topic: Organizational Excellence: Emerging Status Quo
Professional status carries with it privileges and trust. It is essential that the professional carry on his or her practice in such a way as to ensure the continuance of that trust from the social structure within which the practice operates. How that trust is maintained is a complex, at times volatile and time consuming enterprise. This is especially true where the profession is self-governing and involves the health, wealth or welfare of society.
Mr. Vertlieb will discuss with us the parameters within which the necessary limitations and requirements are drawn, how they are implemented and enforced. His speech will be enlightening while at times humorous but always relevant.
Mr. Vertlieb served as the past president of the Law Society of British Columbia. He is a trial lawyer who has appeared in criminal and civil matters in all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. From 2010 to 2012 Mr. Vertlieb served as Commission Counsel to the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry which looked into the mass murder of vulnerable women from the downtown Vancouver, British Columbia. He also was the Commission Counsel for the Braidwood inquiry into the Robert Dzykanski case at the Vancouver airport.
