EDGE COMPUTING

Extension of the cloud services

closer to the mobile terminal:

 Computing and storage

capabilities at the edge

 Applications are executed at

the edge, can follow the user

 Apps can be “broadcasted” to

the access points

 Control, signaling, and AAA

can remain in the backbone

DOWNLOAD ZONES – TIGHT INTEGRATION OF WIRELESS IEEE TECHNOLOGIES WITH 3GPP TECHNOLOGIES

Tight integration of IEEE technologies

(802.11x) to the mobile core network:

 Specialized access point for ultra-

high data rate (Tb/s) push services

(email sync, etc.).

Low rate full coverage network for

signaling, authentication, and

access point preparation (context

awareness)

 Access point provides only ultra

high data rate pipe, but no mobility

PRESS RELEASES ON 5G INITIATIVES IN EUROPE

5G mobile and wireless communication systems will

require a mix of new system concepts to boost

spectral efficiency, energy efficiency and the

network design, such as massive MIMO

technologies, green communications, cooperative

communications and heterogeneous wireless

networks. We expect to explore the prospects and

challenges of 5G mobile and wireless

communication systems combining all of the above

new designs and technologies. It is important to

recognize revolutionary technology elements and

more evolutionary approaches which both will lead

to 5G (quote from: Vodafone)

28

Extreme services such as augmented reality,

tactile Internet require a network with low latency

 Broadcast services (asymmetric communication)

will become part of the overall network

architecture to cover all possible services

Crowd behavior and service support (unicast vs.

multicast services): Requesting massive

communication streams with huge probability of

overlap

Service execution in visited networks (roaming):

Low latency and caching applications have to be

supported in roaming and full mobility scenarios

MANIFOLD REQUIREMENTS WILL CHALLENGE THE

FUTURE COMMON NETWORK SYSTEM CONCEPT

Users expect high service performance no matter

whether they are at their workplace, enjoying

leisure activities such as shopping, or being on

the move on foot or in a vehicle

 Internet of Things (IoT)/Machine type

communication (MTC) at rise: Most business-

related applications need low latency, high

reliability, high availability

 Personal Area Networks (PANs): Different

devices around a person will request access to

the network via gateways, maybe directly

Sensor data in enterprises: Different kind of

sensors have to interact between them and with

the outside world

Most important use cases/scenarios

Key numbers for 5G operator – EU triggered public private partnership

GENERAL CHALLENGES 5G INFRASTRUCTURE PPP

1000 times higher mobile data volume per

geographical area.

10 to 100 times more connected devices.

10 times to 100 times higher typical user data rate.

 10 times lower energy consumption

 End-to-End latency of < 1ms

Ubiquitous 5G access including in low density areas

When will keys (the old-fashioned metal device) be used for the last time?

When will we listen to a CD or DVD for the last time ?

USE CASE: SEAMLESS HAND-OVER BETWEEN WI-FI - LTE

• A simulated location movement of the subscriber leads to an access

network change due to decrease of the signal strength

• A rule set of possible access networks was sent after connecting the first

time to the EPC and will be enforced on the client’s side

• The client’s mobility manager always watches the available access

networks and initiates the Hand-Over if the signal strength is lower than a

set up threshold value

• The connectivity of all applications stays uninterrupted

• Real-time communication implemented by WebRTC

Network service providers/operators face a huge amount of challenges

Traffic grows and revenues grow not as fast as the traffic – revenue per bit is decreasing

 Number of end-devices increases

Number of application areas and services increases

More and more new services appearing with critical network requirements – bandwidth

and especially latency (e.g. mobile augmented reality)

 Network service provider/operators answer through

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) – cloudification

Software Defined Networking (SDN) – programmability

New technology cycle – 5G approach

NFV and SDN and new technologies offer the chance to reduce the complexity in the

network (nodes)

New communication models offer the possibility to describe the software driven network

operations, protocols, and control mechanisms in an easier and clearer way
