Ghana is located in West Africa

and shares land borders with

Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire and

Togo. Ghana has more than 100

ethnic groups and sub-groups. The

Akan are the largest ethnic group,

at nearly half of the population.

Accra is the capital and most

populated city, home to 2.27

million people. Accra is also the

main tourist hub, sporting a wide

variety of hotels, museums.

monuments, and nightclubs.

Kumasi is Ghana’s second city,

more busy and hectic than Accra.

It's the seat of power of the Asante

Kingdom, which has reigned for

300+ years. The region has a

number of craft villages which

supply a lucrative export trade in

Ghanaian art. Historically, Kumasi

was an important stop for many

African slaves who eventually

embarked on ships leaving the

Gold Coast during the slave trade.

Cape Coast is the capital of the

Central Region, in southern Ghana.

It’s known for its role in the

transatlantic slave trade. The Cape

Coast and Elmina castles housed

slaves from all over West Africa

before they were transported to

the Americas. The slave castles are

popular tourist attractions today.

COUNTRY INFOGhana is known for its beautiful

fabrics and fashion, including

traditional and modern styles

made of Adinkra cloth, Kente

cloth and African print fabric

made of Dutch wax textiles.

Ghana was the 1st sub-Saharan

African nation to become

independent of European

colonization. Ghana's flag was

designed to replace the UK flag at

independence in 1957. The flag

consists of the colors Red, Gold,

and Green in horizontal stripes

with a five-pointed black star in

the center. RED represents the

blood of those who died in the

country's independence struggle.

GOLD represents the mineral

wealth of the country. GREEN

symbolizes the country's rich

forest and THE BLACK STAR

stands for the lodestar of African

freedom.

Ghana's first president, Dr Kwame

Nkrumah, was a Pan African

leader and visionary, who sought

to unify Africa and its diaspora. Its

current president, Nana Akufo

Addo, is continuing that Pan

African tradition, having launched

the wildly successful Year of

Return campaign in 2019 and

granted Ghanaian citizenship to

200 members of the diaspora.
