Mr. H.R. Mohan, Chairman of IEEE CS,in his welcome address stated that the TCP/IPprotocol co-developed by Dr. Vint Cerf pavedthe way for the modern Internet on 1st Jan 1983and it had revolutionized our day-to-day life.He added that it is a great opportunity for us tolearn about the future of the Internet from oneof the fathers of Internet Vint Cerf.

Dr. Janakiram, Chairman, ACM ChennaiChapter, in his formal introduction stated thatDr. Vint Cerf, the current president ofAssociation for Computing Machinery is a greatvisionary and has been working on Internet rightfrom its early days when it was a project ofDARPA. Dr. Cerf, apart from being a TuringAward (considered as Nobel Prize in Computing)winner has received the U.S. National Medal ofTechnology and Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian award. Dr. Cerfhas received several awards and has served andserving in the boards of many organizationsassociated with the Internet. Dr. Cerf, a doctoratein Computer Science from UCLA, has beenawarded honorary doctorate by over 30universities all over the world and is also a fellowof major computer and technical societies andassociations such as ACM, IEEE, BCS,American Association for the Advancement ofScience, International Engineering Consortium,Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering andmany more. He also serves as the Vice Presidentand Chief Internet Evangelist at Google, USA.

Presentation on “The Future of the Internet”

Dr. Vint Cerf, started his talk, outliningthe global & regional statistics on Internet andthen highlighted the status in India and briefedon the steps to be taken to increase the accessin India. While speaking on the recent changesin the Internet scenario, he briefed on IPv6 toco-exist with the current IPV4, InternationalDomain Naming, new gTLDs, Domain NameSystem Security, Digitally Signed AddressRegistration, Sensor Networks, Smart Grid,Mobile Devices and Internet enabled devices. He added that the following are some of thetechnology challenges the Internet is facing:Scaling issues to avoid centralization andinformation latency, Border gateway protocolfor Openflow networks, issues beyondaddressing, Configuration management andaccess control in the Internet of Things, issuesin certificates and Certification, Role of trustedcomputing modules in hardware and softwaredesign, paranoid browsers and sandboxes, Interclod protocols and architecture, and Delay anddisruption tolerant networking and public safetyNets. He said that Smart Grid is the way tolook into the future by highlighting Smart GridInteroperability Panel, Smart Energy Profile,Configuration, Control & Reporting, Safety and

Security, Production vs Consumption, Anaylticsand Loosely Coupled Power Grids.

In the area of Internet Policy Challenges,Dr. Cerf spoke about the Internet Governance,Role of ITU, Privacy, Safety and Security,Digital Signatures, Intellectual Property andDigital Vellum focusing on preservation of dataand software. He concluded his talk outliningon The Inter Planetary Networking SpecialInterest Group (IPNSIG) which seeks topromote effective data communications overinterplanetary distances. He said thatcommunicating over those vast distances and inthe challenging (for data communications)environment of space requires a really differentapproach to networking than that ubiquitousnetworking environment we are most used to.His one hour 20 minutes uninterruptedstreaming like talk was enjoyed by everyone. He spared his time to answer a no. of queriesfrom the audience.

At the time of vote of thanks, standingovation was given to Dr. Cerf. Mementos werepresented to him by. Mr. A. Chandrasekaran,Chairman of CSI Chennai and Mr. K. Bhaskaran,President of IITMAA.

Sri Ramakrishna Engineering CollegeWIE: Special talk on “Women Empowermentand You”

A special talk on “Women Empowermentand You” was delivered by Mrs. Sreejaya, aleading and successful lawyer in Coimbatore on19th Jan 2013. She provided an insight into thetransition of the roles of women two generationsearlier and the current scenario. In her talk, sheemphasized that empowerment truly comeswhen both men and women have a level playingfield. When women are denied opportunities, roles, responsibilities we deny them the base

for empowerment. Stress was given on the minuteencounters that women face in workplace, homewhere change of attitude has to take place.Change starts at home, after all the men on theearth are brothers, sons and fathers of variousfamilies she pointed out. Citing various examplesof how women should be cautious regarding thepersonal information divulged to fellow workersthat could be misused, she gave us the precautionarypush. Giving her example as a lawyer, and someonewhose work takes her to different parts of theworld, she states that women of this generationare capable of doing things alone withoutexpecting aid from husbands or fathers. Withregard to punishments awarded to defaulters, herperspective is that prevention is better than cure. The crime rate doesn’t come down despite beinggiven a life imprisonment or a capital punishment, she said. The criminal only makes use of theopportunities and we shouldn’t we giving themone. One should be alert and awake during alltimes of public travel or during the night time.
