PQPCS-11: National Conference on Power Quality and Power ConversionSystem at Anand Institute of Higher Technology

The IEEE student branch of AIHTactivities organized a one day NationalConference on “Power Quality and PowerConversion System (PQPCS-11)” on 29th Apr2011 to provide the participants an opportunityfor developing interaction betweenacademicians, industry experts and researchscholars to discuss the latest emergingtechnology in the field of Electric Power Quality,Power Conversion Systems, EnergyManagement, Power Electronics and AdjustableSpeed Drives and share their experiences, expertise and further identity newer areas ofresearch and cooperation.

The conference was inaugurated by thechief guest Mr.Hari Eswaran, Chairman, EasunReyrolle Limited, Chennai and Guest of honorMr.N.Jagannathan, Director and CEO, Fourth

Dimension Technology Private Limited,Chennai. The function started with the lightingof kuthuvilakku by Dr.S.Arivazhagi, Director.Thiru. K. Sridharan, Secretary delivered thekeynote address. Dr. T. A. Raghavendiran, principal welcomed the gathering.Dr.L.Premalatha, HOD/EEE spoke about thedepartment activities and highlighted theconference details. Ms. T. Anuradha, AP/EEEintroduced the chief guest and Ms. P.Mangayarkarasi, SL/EEE introduced the guestof honor.

The guests in their address spoke aboutthe significance of Power Quality which isgreatly influenced by voltage variations, voltageunbalance, frequency variations, flickering andharmonics and explained the solutiontechniques by means of Suitable PowerConditioning Technologies, Active HarmonicFiltering, Improved Power Quality Convertersetc and application of power electronicssystems used for energy conversion. It wasfurther stated that, the generation of harmonicsand reactive power flow in a power system isgreatly influenced by the widespread use ofpower electronic converters in addition to othersources of harmonics and reactive power. Thedesign, development and successful application

of single-phase, power quality improvementconverters in domestic, commercial andindustrial environment has made possible thedesign and development of three-phase powerquality improvement converters and theirwidespread use in different applications. Alsothey dealt with a comprehensive review of powerconversion configurations used for renewableenergy generation, control approaches, performance on supply and load sides in termsof input power factor, THD and well-regulated,reduced-rippled dc output, power rating, costand selection for specific applications.

The student’s research presentation tookplace in different sessions on various newconcepts in the field of “Power Quality and PowerConversion” and showed great interest in designand implementation of various power conditioningtechnologies that can be utilized in renewableenergy systems. It was helpful for the tostudents, researchers, designers and engineersto know state-of-the-art of power qualityimprovement and power conversion technology

Workshops at Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology

IEEE Student Branch of SriMuthukumaran Institute Of Technologyorganized a couple of events on 1st April 2011.The day geared up with a session on“Importance of IEEE in an Engineers Life”,followed by a “Workshop on StressManagement”. The Program commenced with

an inaugural speech by Mr. Kotteswaran,Student member.

The first session on Importance of IEEEin an Engineers Life sparked off when Ms. JenoHelcy, student member, invited Mr. M. Karthik,Former SB Chair, to take charge of the session. He gave a clear and distinct idea about theimportance of IEEE, and the significance of IEEEwith various departments of Engineering. Hispresentation made it clear that IEEE is not justan institution of the Electrical Engineers, butalso for all the other forms of engineering. Thesession proved helpful in clarifying certainconfusions which persisted in the minds of thenewly inducted members of the student branch.

The Workshop on Stress Management

was handled by Mrs. S. Kalaiselvi, StudentBranch Counselor. The session provedbeneficial in learning the art of proper planningto avoid hard hitting of books at the last minuteof the exams. Since the exams are round thecorner, the session was very useful andinformative for all the students.

The program came to an end with thevote of thanks delivered by Mr. Satish, StudentMember. The program received good responsefrom all the participants. The Student Branchexpresses its sincere thanks to HOD of EEEdepartment, Branch Counselor, and all theparticipants for making the event a grandsuccess.
