Session 4 The ALC Audit Process

The Audit Questions
• All ALC Codes have the same 73 level 1 (critical) questions that are the entry level to Codes and are linked to legislation (legal requirement) or an ALC Standard.
• Industry Codes have added the own industry specific level 2 questions and steel have added a 3rd level of questions.
The process • Confirm your supply chain partner (follow the money)
• Apply to join a Code
• Identify the role your company has in CoR • Consignor / Carrier / Consignee – refer Responsibility Matrix
(carriers can be a prime carrier or a subcontractor)
• Other CoR roles in your business - scheduler, operator, load mgr, loader, unloader, packer, employer of the driver, prime contractor.
• Carry out an internal review before the audit
The Process
• Arrange for an external audit
• Close out Critical CAR’S, • level 2 & 3 CAR’s are required to be closed before the next audit.
• Conduct a Partnership Audit Review (PAR) with your Supply Chain Partner.
• Become a signatory.
Results from last years audits
Completed 237 audits, in the last 12 months, in all 4 codes.
• Highest scores: Communication, Driver Health / Drug & Alcohol,
Operation Infrastructure.
• Lowest scores: Safe Loads (restraint), Speed Mgt (risk assessments)
• 2 of the subjects in this afternoons workshops.

What is a “Reasonable Enquiry”?
• Its your legal responsibility NTC Website: “Under the new laws, everyone in the supply chain must take ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent driver fatigue and ensure a driver does not drive a heavy vehicle while impaired by fatigue – an approach consistent with existing Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) laws.”
