CLARK October has been a busy and fun-filled month at Chaffey-Burke. We started the month with our annual Terry Fox Run that allowed our students to show support for Cancer research as they put tremendous effort into running in our community or around our school field. Our students particularly enjoyed the staff challenge at the end of the run where they watched several Chaffey staff members being soaked with water. There was great laughter and cheering. Our grade 4 to 7 students attended their first Young People’s Concert at the Michael J. Fox Theatre. They were treated to a performance by Groupo America . On October 17th, we participated in the Great B.C. Shake Out. This was our first earthquake drill for the school year. Our students demonstrated fabulous cooperation during the Shake Out as the weather was quite uncooperative. October ended with a fun-filled Hallowe’en day. Our students showed their individuality and their creativity in the costumes they wore and there was a good variety of activities that took place in the classrooms and in the gym. We are continuing to work on our reading goal at Chaffey. This month, several of our primary teachers have been participating in a school-based book club facilitated by our District Literacy Consultant. They are reading the Daily 5 book. Daily 5 is a Literacy Framework that focusses on the goals of instilling behaviors of independence, creating a classroom of highly engaged readers, writers, and learners, and providing teachers with time and structure to meet diverse student needs. Our group of primary teachers are working collaboratively to integrate the concepts and practices of Daily 5 into their daily schedules. We also have 4 intermediate classroom teachers working collaboratively to implement Daily 5 into their curriculum. Many positive reading experiences continue to be offered in each classroom at Chaffey-Burke. MESSAGE FROM MS. CLARK

October has been a busy and fun-filled month at Chaffey-Burke.

This month, several of our primary teachers

have been participating in a school-based book club facilitated by our District Literacy Consultant. They are reading the Daily 5 book. Daily 5 is a Literacy Framework that focusses on the goals of instilling

behaviors of independence, creating a classroom of highly engaged readers, writers, and learners, and providing teachers with time and structure to meet diverse student needs.

Another amazingly successful run this year at Chaffey-Burke! We raised over $7000.00 . Thank you to everyone who made this years event such a success.

CROSS COUNTRY The Chaffey Cross Country Team had an excellent running season! Our runners had early morning practices

each week, rain or shine, which allowed our students to improve their personal best times over the Cross-Country season.

Thank you to Ms. Slack for her continued dedication to coaching our Chaffey Cross Country team. Thank you also to all our parents that volunteered to drive to the meets each week.

Congratulations to all of our Cross-Country team members for their commitment and their running efforts!

STUDENT LATES AND ABSENCES

Please call the office at 604-296-9008 and press #2 to leave a message on our absentee line if your child is going to be late or absent due to an illness or appointment. As part of our student safety policy, phone calls are made to every student who is not accounted for after morning attendance. If your child arrives to school after the second bell at 8:58 am, they are considered late and need to report to the office for a late pass so you don’t receive a phone call. We

appreciate your cooperation in advance. WHEN TO KEEP YOUR SICK CHILD HOME

For the protection of your child, as well as other children, please keep your child home if he/she: • Has a fever • Is too sick to take part in all normal school activities • Has a suspected or known communicable disease (ie: strep throat, pink eye, chicken

pox, or any other undiagnosed rash). Keep them home until they are no longer infectious.

Please let the school know your child’s symptoms.

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELLOR There is a new, free service that's available to help BC families with young children who are experiencing challenges with anxiety.

The Confident Parents: Thriving Kids – Anxiety Program is a phone-based coaching service for parents and caregivers that effectively reduces mild to moderate anxiety in their children ages 3 – 12.

Through a series of online videos demonstrating key concepts and approaches, supported by 4 to 8 weekly coaching sessions, parents and caregivers build skills and strategies they can use with their child at home, at school and with friends.

Developed by the Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division in collaboration with BC experts who work extensively with children experiencing anxiety and their families, this ‘made in BC’ program incorporates concepts from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

These phone- and web-based programs improve access to early interventions by reducing barriers to support such as long wait times, cost, distance and stigma associated with accessing interventions.

PLEASE NOTE: Confident Parents: Thriving Kids – Anxiety Program is available at no cost to families across BC through physician, teacher or school counsellor referral. For more information and referral forms, please visit www.confidentparentsbc.ca.
