Final Scheme / “Producing Architecture” / Chadi Adada

Architecture has become an increasingly inward looking profession. As architects we tend to get bogged down by the beaurocracy of design. As a result, it seems we have lost the appeal of the masses. Architecture has fallen far from the prestige of days past. We must make the profession relevant again. In doing so, we are not only rescuing architecture from its extinction, we are also using it to find solutions to present-day problems. In doing so we can once more begin to practice the profession as it was originally intended.

Pop architecture speaks to the masses through its character. This type of architecture is sensitive to the present day environment. It is molded by current events and fortified through modern-day sensibilities. My project explores the idea of producing architecture. That is to say I am interested in understanding the philosophy involved in manufacturing architectural components in the same manner a consumer product would be manufactured. Looking at the Nike Racer Flyknit, it is easy to dismiss it as just another passing trend in the ephemeral world of fashion. I argue that Nike’s flyknit material presents valuable lessons which we can learn from. Nike’s flyknit is a patented manufacturing technique that involves the weaving of synthetic material into a tactile and flexible surface that forms the upper of the sneaker. This technique is not only incredibly efficient in terms of material use, but also lends itself to functional and aesthetic purposes.

The flyknit assumes different levels of densities and patterns according to the region of the shoe. Areas like the toe box feature a looser knit to alllow for greater flexibility as well as breathability. These techniques were carried forward in my thesis explorations as I began to invesitage how the industrial production of architecture could become a reality.

The final scheme presented an opportunity to tie in all of the lessons learned through thesis epxloration. Using the techniques appropriated from earlier segments, I began to look at how to apply Nike’s flyknit to larger spatial based constructs. Nike’s deeply entrenched relation to sports informed on ideas relating to site choice. Ultimately the choice was made to look at how the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid could be transformed into a crisis center in the event of a major catastrophe. Due to their large open plans, stadiums are the most common choices for public refugee in the event of natural disasters. The knit technique was used to create a family of dome like structures. These structures were joined using connector pieces through which the knit continues into the adjoining structure. This system would allow for the rapid fabrication and instal-lation of these units in the event of crisis. Nike’s flyknit technique allows us to redefine the charac-ter of refuge housing and afford it certain levels of comfort. This system aims to prove the viability of applying industrial techniques to produce architecture that is not only economical but also aesthetic and functional.
