World Wide WebWorld Wide Web

The World Wide Web (WWW) was developed in 1989 by CERN physicist Tim Berners-Lee. Later, CERN announced that WWW would be free to use for anyone. Before the introduction of HTML and HTTP, protocols such as FTP and Gopher were used to retrieve individual file. These protocols offer a simple directory structure which the user navigates and chooses files to download. Documents were most often presented as plain text without formatting, or were encoded in word processor formats.

Library websiteLibrary website• Librarians first used websites for promoting

library activities as a part of their traditional library extension services.

• The main goal for development of library website is to establish an on-line presence of the library and make their information available to anyone at any time.

• Later on library used it for announcement of new services and marketing of its products.

Web 1.0Web 1.0

The World Wide Web or WWW or Web 1.0 is a system of interlinked, hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. The first implementation of the web represents the web 1.0, which, according to Berners-Lee, could be considered the “read-only web” contribution.

Library 1.0Library 1.0Library 1.0 is really whatever point we are at present. The reality is that the number of users who have needs is outnumbering than those whose needs we are meeting. In other words, we are offering services that are not wanted by a majority of our users. Library 1.0 is the current activity cycle of planning and implementing. We often prepare and plan for years, but when those plans are put into place and executed we have a tendency to walk away without performing constant follow-up. What we therefore need to remember is that Library 1.0 is a restrictive place, governed by strict hierarchies, rigid boundaries, and underpinned by change-avoidance.

Library 2.0Library 2.0Library 2.0 is a term coined by Michael Casey on his blog, LibraryCrunch.

Jack M. Maness has identified following four essential elements for Library 2.0:

• User centered: Creation of the content and services they view within the library’s web-presence, OPAC, etc.

• Multimedia character: Contain video and audio components.

• Social rich: Both synchronous (e.g. IM or Instant Messaging) and asynchronous (e.g. wikis) ways for users to communicate with one another and with librarians

• Community service: It seeks to continually change its services, to find new ways to allow communities, not just individuals to seek, find, and utilize information.

WordPress is an open source blog tool and publishing platform powered by PHP and MySQL. It's often customized into a content management system. It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. We customized it and developed the Library Blogs of Advanced Bell Institute (http://abclibrary.wordpress.com/).

Library 2.0Library 2.0The imperatives motivated by S.R. Ranganathan’s Five Laws in early- 1930’s and today’s Library 2.0 are the same – although methods for disseminating and accessing information have evolved over the years but our need for knowledge and inspiration remains constant.
