COLLABORATE // to work jointly, especially to produce or create something.

The story of our firm began as a bilateral endeavor with a focus on client collaboration. It grew through shining an architectural light on the design of primary healthcare facilities. And the two partners, working together out of a mutual respect for each other and a mutual passion for innovative architectural design, envisioned the creation of CEVIAN Design Lab. New opportunities emerged through the commissioning of projects for historical rehabilitation, higher education, and civic design. And the firm developed a reputation for provision of quality work and innovative architecture.

The story continued with CEVIAN Design Lab experiencing exponential growth in revenue, projects, and employees. The two member team increased to three, and then four, and more recently to six, allowing for its root approach of collaboration to extend to the internal design team, as well as to the clientele. As a collaborative firm, our team at CEVIAN Design Lab is dedicated to our clients and our community. We believe our growth is a representation of not only our quality of work, but of our clients’ and community’s commitments to us.

Mark earned a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from Georgia Southern University in 1999, and went on to receive a Master of Architecture from the New School of Architecture and Design in 2009, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Mark is a Registered Architect and Registered Interior Designer. He has designed religious, medical, educational, retail, residential, sporting, and heavy industrial facilities. Mark’s philosophy toward architecture is one of informed simplicity. He believes it is easy to make a design complex, but what is truly challenging is making a complex problem simple. Mark strives to accomplish simple, clean, and elegant design. He also has a passion for sustainable building design and lives in the only LEED Gold certified residence in Northwest Georgia. A life long resident of Rome, Georgia, Mark is a member of Seven Hills Rotary and the Historic Desoto Theater Foundation, and Trinity United Methodist Church where he worships with his wife, Michelle, and sons, Logan and Cooper.

PRINCIPAL, ARCHITECT // Mark Cochran, NCARB, EDAC

Jessica received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oklahoma, and a Master of Science in Architecture in Design Research from the University of Michigan. Her career began as an architectural designer in Oklahoma, designing primary schools. She has been a finalist in the ULI/Gerald D. Hines Urban Design Competition, presented a peer-reviewed paper at the Creating_Making forum, and received a research grant for the design of post-Katrina housing. Jessica specializes in large-scale, mixed-used development, and building reuse/re-visioning. She believes that designing creative solutions to spatial conundrums, within the client’s budget, is a welcome challenge. She currently chairs the board of the Chamber of Commerce’s Technology SquareTable, and is on the Kiwanis Rome board. She is also an active member of the committee for Confluence Rome - an innovation conference. She and her husband, Grant, enjoy hanging out with their two dogs, Zeus and Aphrodite, and working out at Crossfit Rome.

Jessica is a member of the American Institute of Architects.

PRINCIPAL, ARCHITECT // Jessica Bittle, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP

Audrey received a Bachelor of Science in both Building Science and Appropriate Technology, in 2013, from Appalachian State University. Her primary focus of study was architectural technology and design, as well as design of renewable energy systems. She previously worked for Team Réciprocité, the Solar Decathlon team from Appalachian State University, competing in the Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 competition. While on the team, she managed the design of the exterior environment and contributed to the architectural and urban planning teams. Audrey has independently studied architecture, passiv haus design, and renewable energy systems abroad in Italy and Austria. After graduation, she moved to Rome, Georgia, where she has worked to positively contribute to her new community and its built environment.

Audrey is a member of the American Institute of Architects.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER // Audrey Burton, AIA, NCARB

Aaron is a native citizen of Floyd and Polk Counties. He attended Southern Polytechnic State University where he received a Bachelor of Architecture in 2004. Afterwards, Aaron worked in Atlanta, Georgia, designing churches, higher education facilities, and single and multi-family residences. In 2008, Aaron was a member of the winning team for the Atlanta AIA and Young Architects Forum inaugural, 48-hour competition to design a multi-modal transit hub located on the Atlanta belt line. In 2009, Aaron took an extended sabbatical from architecture to pursue an interest in organic farming and sustainability. He has returned to the profession with a dedication and desire to create places that work for the betterment of the individual, the community, and the environment. Aaron lives with his wife, Teresa, and their two children, Og and Elm.

Aaron is a member of the American Institute of Architects.

OFFICE MANAGER // Jessica Flood

Beth received a Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn University, and she has also studied energy efficiency technology for residential applications. Beth has extensive experience designing religious, medical, educational, government and retail facilities, as well as experience in residential design. Additionally, Beth has experience designing for VA SAH grants. She has worked in Atlanta, Carrollton and Rome, Georgia, and she is a native of Floyd County. Beth serves on the Board of Trustees for Salmon Cemetery Fund and is a Workforce Education Partner with the Gordon County CTAE/College and Career Academy. Her architectural focus is primarily on residential design, and she is passionate about positively contributing to her local community and environment. Beth lives with her husband, Joe, and their two children, Lauren and Natalie.

Beth is a member of the American Institute of Architects.

Jessica earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management and a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management from The University of Georgia in 2009. She went on to receive a Master of Business Administration from Berry College in 2014, with induction into the Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Societies. Jessica’s background includes marketing, strategic planning and implementation, with experience in higher education, small business, healthcare, and sports industries. She enjoys working with small businesses to develop well-rounded business plans that ensure continued growth and success. Jessica lives in Rome, Georgia, with her husband, Nathan, and their two dogs, Mowgli and Libby.

As an architecture firm, we are commissioned to thoughtfully engage every aspect of design. Each project encompasses unique conditions. Therefore, the design must acknowledge each condition, and provide for an appropriate response.

CEVIAN Design Lab’s story was influenced by the opportunity to architecturally compose efficient design for the Primary Care facilities associated with Floyd Medical Center. It is essential that the tradition of care established by Floyd Medical Center be maintained throughout all facets of their healthcare. Specific conditions to acknowledge in healthcare architecture include patient focused design, efficient programming to minimize the number of steps between stations and rooms, and lucid wayfinding. Since its inception, CEVIAN Design Lab has had the opportunity to positively contribute to the health and happiness of a variety of patients through designing for the fundamental conditions necessary to maintain their well-being in a healthcare environment.

The architectural commission is to thoughtfully engage every aspect of a project’s design. Each unique condition must be considered. And the experience of the end-user is the point of convergence determined by the resolution of each condition.

In 2012, CEVIAN Design Lab was given the unique opportunity to design a Welcome Center for historic Berry College. Located on 27 000 acres of scenic property in the Northwest Georgia foothills, Berry College is a destination for educational, cultural, historical, and recreational fulfillment. The Welcome Center would become the threshold of their campus: an experiential transition from the peripheral to the opportunity within. To achieve the point of convergence was to assure that each entrant would feel gladly received.

The architecture of a building is experiential: it is felt, it is perceived, it generates emotion, and causes a reaction. While this experiential condition is important to contemplate for every project, it is a particularly vital condition when considering the experience one has in a building provided for the purpose of education.

To prepare one for an intellectually mature life is the definitive idea behind learning, educating, and pursuing the capacity for reasoning and judgment. Therefore, the building in which this act occurs is highly important for cultivating the motivation to pursue such advancement. The architecture of an educational environment must activate a desire to learn; a desire to pursue; a desire to accept challenge and overcome it. Therefore, we are grateful for the opportunities in which we are given to acknowledge the important architectural conditions that cultivate the motivation to prepare oneself for an intellectually mature and ardently pursuant life.

To dwell is a term with diversified usage. One can dwell in, one can dwell among, one can dwell on, one can be a dweller, or in a more architectural sense, something can be a dwelling. As architects, this is one of our first and foremost callings: to provide shelter, to provide a dwelling.

To provide a place to call home, a shelter above one’s head, and a comfortable environment to call one’s own is an architectural pleasure. At CEVIAN Design Lab, our residential architecture has a focus on provision of comfort, needs, and wants, in addition to intentionally designing for the site on which the dwelling will reside and integration of sustainable design principles. We believe in minimizing disruption to the natural environment and creating dwellings in harmony with the seasons and moods of its climate and inhabitants. The architectural conditions of one’s dwelling are vital to creating positive, experiential surroundings, and we strive to ensure those conditions provide a dwelling that is satisfying and enriching to the occupants.

As the flow of time steadily passes, what was once called modern and contemporary quickly becomes a part of the past. Structures are a significant component contributing to the deterioration of the past. From dilapidated downtowns to abandoned strip malls, antecedent architecture is often left behind, creating negative experiential environments. Historic rehabilitation of old structures can retrieve them from an exhaustive state of decay and recreate an invigorating architectural environment for social contribution.

By contributing to the preservation of historic structures, we believe we can retain the rich history of our community while also providing for the needs of today. Innovative and appropriate preservation of the existing built environment will strengthen the urban fabric of the community and bring its citizenry closer to the society in which they dwell. We believe we have an economic responsibility to reinvest in our existing infrastructure and revitalize it for use in our contemporary environment.
