    Bontrager has a longassociation with aerodynamicistSteve Hed who took time out romproducing his own wheels todesign the Aeolus. Despite being200g above the average in this testtheir exceptional stiness madethem eel very eective orsprinting and attacking on shortsharp climbs, but the short spokesmade or a harsh eeling ride. Therim is deeper and moreaerodynamic than the others, butit didnt eel any aster or ecientonce up to speed. Their tendencyto catch side winds made the biketwitchy, and it was tricky to keep aline in blustery conditions in atime-trial, though a rider who usedthem in a road race ound merit inthis when lining himsel up or asprint. The alloy hubs use 6901cartridge bearings, but they are alittle trickier to adjust than cupand cone bearings.

    how we TesTed ThemBefore using them, we checked all the wheels for trueness (side to side

    movement) and roundness. We also checked the bearings, with a rating of Perfect

    meaning they felt silky smooth to turn between thumb and forefinger. We also rated the

    hubs for how much adjusting they needed when new, and gave spoke tension before

    use a rating out of 10 10 is perfect, while a score of less than 7 would have us reaching

    for the spoke nipple key to tighten them. After putting in the same number of

    kilometres of riding into each pair we took all the measurements again. Also, where the

    tyres are very tight fitting and hard to get on easily, weve said so.

    Flexible wheels can rob you of speed and cause the rim to rub on the brake blocks. To

    test for acceleration we performed a series of lamppost sprints a test involving

    sprinting from one lamppost to another, starting at 15mph, to see which were the easiest

    to wind up to speed. To compare these results with measured readings we rigidly

    mounted the axle of each wheel in a jig and placed a 15kg weight on the edge of the rim.

    Then, using an engineers dial gauge we measured how much the rim bent upwards in

    reaction to this and called it our deflection test. The tests were carried out with a fully

    inflated tyre as these can effectively shrink the overall diameter of the wheel with a

    resultant reduction in spoke tension.

    these are the lightest wheels ontest and they really eel like it onsteeper climbs. All Eastons wheelsare hand-trued or ner controlover the nished product. Insteado using elbowed spokes, Eastonspokes are threaded directly intothe hub beore nal tensioning,then tested using a sonic device toensure even tension. The result isrim trueness and roundness closeto perection.

    To increase pedalling eciency,Easton uses a 25mm rim with 24spokes at the rear and, to minimiseweight, a 22mm rim with 18spokes at the ront. The rear hasspoke holes biased towards thedrive-side, so theres less disparitybetween spoke tension across thewheel. The result is a stronger,longer-lasting wheel lesssusceptible to sideways fex thanthe other wire-spoke wheels here.

These wheels werebuilt or a 70kg rider who specieda light and strong wheel suitableor sportive style riding. Matthewscame up with a shallow rim,butted stainless steel spokes and a24 spoke design based on a 2-crossspoke pattern. The Kooka hubs area weight saving upgrade rom thestandard spec, 299 build basedon Ambrosio hubs, and eaturesmooth running and easilyserviceable bearings. Lateraltrueness was out by 0.2mm butwas easily corrected with a spokekey. The rear remained perectlytrue and unlike most o the wheelson test they dont hop when youspin them up between thumb andorenger when tted with tyreand tube showing that thesewheels balanced up very well.     First off, there were a lot of very

    decent wheels on test here, and

    as always judging it was a close

    run thing. At not much more than

    300, both the Pro-Lite

    Braccianos and Pete Matthews

    Pianni wheels proved strong

    performers out on the road and

    the latter can also be built to

    your own personal specifications.

    The same is true of Paul

    Hewitt, who once again built a

    pair of top quality race wheels

    that should last for years. This

    shows that even in the age of

    branded, big name, machine-

    built wheels, the bespoke

    wheelbuilder is far from an

    endangered species in the British

    cycling world.

    When it does come to the big

    hitters, its no surprise that

    Easton, Fulcrum, Campagnolo

    and Mavic all delivered excellent

    quality hoops. The handbuilt

    Eastons were the lightest wheels

    on test and at 600 represent

    great value, but the Braccianos

    just edge it as our best buy.

    Mavics Cosmic Carbones also

    proved a great wheel, though at a

    price. But you can rest assured

    that any of the wheels that

    scored 9/10 wont let you down.

    these handBuilt Wheels arebased around 27mm deepV-section 6066 aluminium rims,radially laced to 20 evenlytensioned Pro-Lite double buttedstainless steel aero spokes at theront, and 24 rear spokes laced in a2-cross pattern. All the nipples areheat treated aluminium. The hubshave top quality adjustableangular contact cartridge bearingsand a needle roller bearing unit onthe inside section o the reehub(to make the overlap betweenreehub and hub body stier).

    The Pro-Lites dont sprint aswell as the Fulcrums and Campagsbut they have a turn o speedthats hard to nd elsewhere atthis price. They also give a

    fulCrum is a company createdby Campagnolo to sate the thirstor wheels compatible withShimano gear systems, but it alsomakes these with a Campagnoloreehub. Not to be conused withthe 2-Way version that uses blackrims and is 70g lighter, theseclincher-only versions arerecognisable by their red anodisedspokes, hubs and rims. Theoversized aluminium spokes addstiness and reduce the likelihoodo spoke breakage; the back o therim is like the CampagnoloEurus smooth so theres no needor rim tape. Such is their stinessthat only the deep section wheelson test can match them or anall-out eeling o acceleration inthe lamppost sprints, and on theclimbs the Racing Zeros walkaway rom all but one o theirrivals the Easton EA90.
