It is with great pleasure that we invite you to be a part of our 2013 season.

As with any theatre season it relies heavily on you, our audience, to bring the Performing Arts Centre to life. Our commitment is to present a season that is out of the ordinary, that has what it takes to not only be special but to be thrilling, amusing, uplifting and in some cases, challenging.

The 2013 season is a continuation of our commitment to presenting works from leading Australian theatre companies supported by popular concert tours, works for young people and schools. We are thrilled to offer a season that is peppered with some great names presented by some of Australia’s best known and loved companies.

You wanted cheaper tickets; we listened and are happy to announce that all of our

productions, except for our top-draw picks, are priced at $40 and under.

2013 at CPAC is also a year with some great ‘fi rsts’ – Our fi rst contemporary dance company, our fi rst Shakespeare and a new joint initiative with the Civic Theatre, Newcastle that allows our members to see more great shows at reduced rates.

Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and under the principles of ‘Animalism’ a better life free from human service is promised to all. Guided by a simple set of rules and an unrelenting respect for authority, it is not long before the rules that promised freedom become the chains that bind the animals once again.

Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, exciting, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events in 2013.

1 March 11am (schools only)

& 8pm

Animal Farm, one of the most controversial and studied political commentaries, arrives in a brand new production combining physical theatre and storytelling. George Orwell’s simple yet intensely powerful fairy tale illustrates how greed and absolute power corrupts absolutely and, with devastating consequences, can change the course of history.

The Australian Government is proud to be associated with this tour through the national performing arts touring

program, Playing Australia, which gives Australian across the country the opportunity to see some of our best performing arts.

SUNDOWNER“Morse is splendid...Director Kate Denborough seizes every opportunity to bring to life the collisions between the past and the present happening in the woman’s mind” The Australian

Page 7: Cessnock Performing Arts Centre 2013 Program

When a loved one starts to lose their memories, how do we hold on to them?

Starring Helen Morse, this inter-generational story celebrates the love that

binds families together.

“It’s the strangest thing. No longer being able to tell what is the past and what is the present. It seems that events that took place only minutes ago are now being erased while memories I have been able to hold at bay for decades

suddenly come rushing towards me.”

The realm of memory remains a great mystery. Through the eyes of three generations, Sundowner

tells the story of so many Australian families.

Sundowner combines theatre, dance and physicality in a story of lament and at times, grief and sorrow.

Ultimately though, this is a story of love: love of family, love of history and love of life.

...a dark and deliciously funny comedy guaranteed to make you

laugh... but the elbow jabbing at your ribs is sharper than expected.

Gruff, well ordered, quintessentially Aussie family man Ron is convinced he is

dying. In a magnanimous gesture of loving fi nality, he hosts a party, giving his wife and

children the chance to spend a few last quality moments as a family.

The gathering brings about some urgent confessions, a surprise

‘wedding’, and a visit from the undertaker. As the minutes

tick away, Ron’s party schedule unravels to reveal a dysfunctional family unit that

is both outlandishly bizarre and utterly recognisable.

Love plays a major role in all our lives, but as Shakespeare knew too well, does not always guarantee

a fairy-tale ending.

Set across three different eras, and telling three different versions of events, R&J turns the classic story of Romeo and

Juliet on its head, cutting to the essence of what is real, human and inevitable.

Winner of Outstanding Achievement in Choreography at the 2012 Australian Dance Awards, R&J reinforces the

notion that love – no matter what age you are, or what era you live in – is eternal, and its power, everlasting.

With music composed by John Babbage and recorded by prolific music ensemble Topology, R&J celebrates

contemporary performance at its most bold and powerful.

Jack Charles V The CrownILBIJERRI Theatre Company

An extraordinary tale told by one of the nation’s near forgotten

treasures.Uncle Jack Charles is an Australian

legend: veteran actor, musician, Koori elder, activist and, until recently,

heroin addict and cat-burglar. This is a show about his life – told by him.

From Stolen Generation to Koori theatre in the 70s, from fi lm sets to Her Majesty’s prisons, Jack Charles V The

Crown runs the gamut of a life lived to its utmost. Charles’ unswerving

optimism transforms this tale of addiction, crime and doing time into

a kind of vagabond’s progress – a map of the traps of dispossession and

a guide to reaching the age of grey-haired wisdom.

Accompanied by a three-piece band, this one man show is a

theatrical delight brought to us by the oldest Indigenous theatre company in

Australia.

Incongruous brothers Ian and Ben are on their way to Sydney to visit their recently widowed father. Three big surprises are in store when they arrive at his 75th birthday celebration.

The ‘Old Man’ is worth $100 million. He’s gone and married Fury, an American

beauty queen half his age. There is no pre-nup…

With his trademark wit and skilful blending of contemporary culture within the ageless framework of family greed, jealousy, love and expectation, Australia’s leading playwright David Williamson has delivered a scorching comedy with bite.

Riverside Productions and True West Theatre

Annie Byron brings all her charm and humour to Connie, a woman of a certain age who wants to believe that fi nding a romantic love through an internet dating site is not a serious

heart hazard.

Based on Andee Jones’ bestselling book Kissing Frogs, it brings a humorous twist to those pressing questions about love such as, why is it so hard to fi nd and even harder to keep? Is romantic love the impossible dream and how do you know Mr Right even when you fi nd him? Insightful and revealing,

RU4Me is a laugh-fi lled, fun night out.

Two sets of identical twins are separated at birthwhen they’re rescued from a shipwreck. And

when they end up in the same shifty, transitory port-town of Ephesus fully grown, we join them

on their bizarre journey of reconciliation. As they collide unknowingly with each other’s friends

and family, it’s not long before this absurd tale of mistaken identity and far-fetched coincidence

unfolds in chaotic hilarity.

Imara Savage takes on one of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies with style. Sharp banter and

comical word-play lure us into a contemporary world where characters are reinvented,

individuality is fl uid, and bigger themes lie justbelow the surface.

Over the course of this fast-paced comedy, truths are increasingly unstable, accidents more

unfortunate and the boundary between what’s real and what isn’t becomes even more tenuous.
