Every week we interview CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the Student Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 212).

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Name: Jonathan Morales Hometown: Nogales, Arizona

Why do you want to study English? I think it’s a great tool for traveling and work.

Why did you choose the University of Arizona? Because I think it’s the best.

Do you enjoy living in Tucson? Yes, I love Tucson. I love the people, the culture, the highways, and the streets. There is no traffic here.

Is there anywhere else in the United States you would like to visit? I really want to go to San Francisco to see the Golden Gate Bridge.

Have you traveled to any other countries besides the U.S? I’ve been to Thailand, Singapore, China, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Guatemala, Bangladesh, Germany, Nepal, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Which country was your favorite to visit and why? Bali in Indonesia because the beaches are so beautiful; it’s a paradise. You feel like you are in another world. Also it is inexpensive and everybody loves Americans.

What do you like to do in your free time? I like running, and I recently started fishing. Right now I’m looking for good places to camp around Tucson.

What is your dream career and why do you feel passionate about it? My dream career is computer networking. In high school I liked coding the way other students liked drawing. I even got a scholarship to take some computer classes at the local college while I was still in high school in El Salvador.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I want to be starting my career in computer networking, living in Germany.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Name: Nawaf Al-Jahdari Hometown: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Level: 3

Tell me a little about yourself, Nawaf.

I like soccer, video games, movies, and one day I’d like to hike.

Did you know that we have a hiking club?

Oh, cool. I didn’t know that.

You can find our activities on the board in the middle of the hall, in the SLC, or online. And you can always ask a Student Activities Assistant for that information.

Thank you. I would really like to do it. I want to go and see nature everywhere. I had an opportunity once in Tennessee, but I was scared to go because it was so cold. So, I didn’t do it.

Good thing Arizona isn’t cold! So what has your favorite experience been in the US?

I really like traveling with friends. I’ve been to Chicago, Nashville, Louisville, and St. Louis.

Could you tell me a story about one of these trips?

My friends and I were in Kentucky. We were driving to St. Louis and it was raining very hard outside. My friend was driving so fast and then all of a sudden the tire blew. When we finally stopped, it was raining so hard that we couldn’t get out of the car for 3 hours.

What did you do?

I was scared of what to do. My friend slept and I decided to check snapchat. We couldn’t do anything because we didn’t have a spare tire. Finally, our friends came with a tire and then we were back on the road to St. Louis.

What did you learn from that experience?

During the dangerous times, don’t be scared. It’s better to be encouraging to your friends by being courageous. Nothing scary has happened since then but I’m ready for the next time.

When it’s the first time, dangerous moments are scary, but I will be calm. I think it’s better to help your friends and know that it’s okay because these moments will become funny stories for your children.

Ask CESLWhat is the SLC?

The SLC stands for the Student Learning Center. It is one of the best places in CESL to interact with staff, student workers, and other CESL students.

Where is the SLC?

The SLC is located in room 212, on the second floor of the CESL building. If you are a student in the Trinity building, there is also a resource center located in Trinity Room 20.

What is there to do in the SCL?

Both rooms available for students have a computer lab that students can use. There are also tables where students can hang out to do homework, or practice their English with other students or CESL staff. CESL’s Student Activities Assistants hold office hours in CESL and are there to help you with any questions, share information on upcoming activities, or just hang out and chat. At CESL, there are also games such as Chess, Scrabble, and Apples to Apples.

How can I improve my English in the SLC?

Students are encouraged to practice their English with one another in the SLC, and with the Student Activities Assistants. The PIL program coordinators, Karyn and Camille, also hold office hours in the SLC to give students individualized help with their English learning skills. Teachers also drop by the SLC to provide students with extra help; these hours are posted in the SLC and Trinity resource center.

Is there any other information in the SLC?

Yes! The SCL is full of flyers and brochures for students. You can find information about tutoring, campus services such as Campus Health or the CatTran, information on the IELTS, and information about Tucson such as housing, public transportation, and local events!

Any tips about using the SLC?

Make sure you know your NetID and password so that you can access the computers. To keep the computers clean and working, food is not allowed in the SLC. Students should also avoid speaking too loudly in the SLC when other students are trying to work.
