Since our inception as a non-profit in 1997, ACA has directed hundreds of millions of dollars towards thousands of conservation efforts across Alberta, from biological studies on the largest species to the securement of vast tracts of precious habitat.

Every dollar from fishing and hunting license sales and every partnership contributes to the conservation of Alberta's natural heritage. Together we are securing the future of fish and wildlife and the habitat they call home while providing Albertans with access to a myriad of sustainable outdoor recreation activities.

We love the work we do. From the day-to-day reward of calling the beauty of Alberta's big backyard our "office" to the privilege of working on behalf of Alberta's hunters, anglers and other outdoor recreationists, we consider ourselves lucky to live and work in such a special place.

We encourage you to find out more about our work and the partnerships that made it possible on our website, in our annual report, or better still, go see for yourself at any of the 700+ Conservation Sites out there for you to explore. Bring the family and spend an afternoon in the peace and wonder of Alberta's wild side. We're confident you'll think it's worth every penny.

Our Mission ACA conserves, protects and enhances fish, wildlife and habitat for all Albertans to enjoy, value and use. Our Vision An Alberta with an abundance and diversity of wildlife, fish and their habitats; where future generations continue to use, enjoy and value our rich outdoor heritage. !

Title: A New Dimension

“In the last few years people who have been my guides, my teachers, mybase have all passed on. This change was sudden and drastic and leftme completely unprepared and alone. I found myself in a different stateas these major support systems were no longer in place. In times of terri-ble crisis they were there to help me sort through all my obstacles. Nowthey are no longer there and I was left to rediscover a new direction. Nottoo long after their passing I had a dream about my Grandfather who atthe time was a Medicine Man in the early and late 70’s. In a dream hecame to visit me and asked me how I was doing. I told him how I felt com-pletely alone and how empty I felt that everyone was gone. He pulled thisold wooden chair beside me and told me that this was a natural part oflife. He also told me that in times like this people awaken new insights. Iwoke up and thought really hard about this dream and what its messagemay be. In the last few years, I have gone back into my life to reprocesshow and where all of my decision-making processes originated from andhave identified what changes need to occur and how to create a newbase that is completely independent. As I was reprocessing everything inmy life I found out that the base was spiritual. This entire picture is based on this process.”

CAREER PORTFOLIOS... an advanced job search technique!

DO YOU... have a collection of documents that you can show employers that provides first hand proof of your RELEVANT work quality, diverse experience, creativity, and relevant skill sets? - If you do ... then you have a PORTFOLIO...if you don't...then you should GET ONE! WHEN would you use a PORTFOLIO? During a job interview; during a performance evaluation meeting; when applying to graduate school; when applying for scholarships; for self-discovery and planning towards career goals/directions

CAREER PORTFOLIOS are developed for many reasons....for employment, they are an advanced job search & interview technique created to help you 'stand out' in the crowd when you are competing for a position in the job market. By showing employers examples of your work & work quality during an interview, you have the chance to demonstrate to employers (vs. just explain) your initiative, performance success and star quality! **REMEMBER: Portfolios are the 'extra' tool that can add to your verbal responses in an interview &/or evaluative meeting, but they should NEVER substitute for your verbal response! YOU are your best communication tool! Only use them if you are confident about your verbal preparation and can then access documents calmly while in the meeting if they add value to the responses you give.

• Portfolios for job search are known by many names: Career Portfolios; Showcase Portfolios; Interview Portfolios; Job Search Portfolios; Targeted Portfolios.

DEVELOPING A PORTFOLIO REQUIRES TIME (1-2 months & ongoing maintenance after that!) so take the time you need to do it right! Don't rush the process...carefully consider each document you collect &/or create and make sure it SPEAKS to your specific employer, as you will pick only a few documents to take to a job interview vs. the Master Collection itself. HOW TO BEGIN TO DEVELOP YOUR OWN CAREER PORTFOLIO:

1. Start collecting examples of your work ie. job descriptions, work projects, school/university papers, transcripts, letters of thanks, photographs of you in work/volunteer roles, newspaper clipping that feature you, etc.

2. Keep portfolio artifacts/documents in a safe place to help in the collection process 3. Make photocopies of each as you go & make a 'copies' collection for future use 4. Attach a large sticky-note on each document that explains what that document means to you

about: skills & abilities that ensured your success; personal qualities & work ethic that were demonstrated through that project; technical skills demonstrated, etc.

5. Consider constructing lists or summaries of other aspects of your strengths, ie. short term goals, long-term goals, skill summaries in technical areas, professional development lists, etc.

6. Start now...start collecting organizational information from your current job or take photographs of yourself if you are speaking in front of a group, delivering a program during your summer job, or demonstrating some skill that is featured in your dream job posting! You may not use all that you collect, but at least you have some elements to highlight!

IF POSSIBLE ATTEND a UofL Career & Employment Services Workshop – see CES INFO: If you are a UofL student or new graduate wanting to find out more about developing your own

portfolio, contact our CES Office: AH – 154 Website: www.uleth.ca/ces Ph: (403) 329-2187

Michelle SnowdonUnderwriter

“For a greater advantage, and the highest placement value, I would recommend courses in law as well as successful completion of a business or insurance program.”

UnderwriterYou’re a relationship developer and decision-maker Underwriters accept or reject risk on behalf of insurance companies. They assess the kind of insurance required by organizations as diverse as a shopping mall, a professional sports team, a manufacturer, a city government or a construction company. Underwriters examine every facet of the organization’s operation and its request for insurance, then decide what the insurance company should cover and how much it should charge.

Sara RunnallsBroker

“A college diploma or university degree in any subject is helpful for entry into the profession, although those who have studied nance, management, mathematics or business would have an advantage.”

Broker / AgentYou’re a people person and a great communicator Insurance brokers and agents help consumers find the right coverage to protect their cars, homes, businesses, boats and belongings against loss through accident, fire or theft. While brokers usually represent several insurance companies, agents are more likely to sell policies for just one. These are the entrepreneurs of the insurance industry with many of them working for themselves or for small independent firms.

Gavin MascarenhasLoss Adjuster

“The best advice is to specialize in law or business-relatedcourses.”

Loss AdjusterYou’re part private investigator and part therapist The loss adjuster is responsible for ensuring that those who have suffered a loss receive the compensation and assistance they are eligible to receive. Whether employed by the insurance company or working as an independent contractor, the loss adjuster investigates the accident, arranges medical treatment if necessary and negotiates the final settlement to restore policy holders to where they were, as closely as possible, before their loss.

Where do you want youreducation to take you?

Here’s a career path withunlimited potential. What are you looking for in a career? Earning potential? Security? Having the chance to face a new and dierent challenge every day? Whatever you’ve learned in school and in life, you’ll have the chance to use it in the insurance industry.

It’s hard to imagine a career choice where you’ll have the opportunity to use more of your skills than insurance. Why? Because insurance is already a part of everything you do. It protects homes, jobs, cars, property and the continuity of lives. And because insurance is all around us, the industry has a wide variety of careers to match your education and amazing flexibility to change directions along the way.

There are more than 110,000 Canadians working in the property & casualty insurance sector. It’s an industry that reflects the face and the values of Canadian society and has a constant need for talented, creative, motivated people.

Are you a people person? Brokers work with clients to create a strategy to protect their assets.

Gifted at math? You could thrive as an actuary.

Good at listening? As a claims professional, you’ll help people who are coping with an accident, fire or theft.

Strategic thinker? You could work as an underwriter and develop the products that keep people protected from unforeseen loss.

As your career in insurance progresses, every day can present interesting new opportunities, new challenges, and the flexibility to pursue new goals.

To find out more about where you might fit in with your post-secondary education, please visit our Web site at www.career-connections.info. You may be surprised to find that insurance isn’t what you think. It’s a whole lot more.

Your interests and your experience may add up to a great career in insurance.

Society of Local Government Managers

Administrative Professionals

Each time we turn on a tap in our kitchens, set the garbage out for pickup,

or cruise through our neighbourhoods on newly paved roads, we access

local government. Providing essential community services that ensure the

quality of our lives is what local government is all about.

City, town, and county managers make an enormous difference in the community they serve. Professional managers, much like executives running private sector corporations, bring together the leadership, vision, and focus on results needed to create better communities.

• managing financial and human resources;

• delivering services;

• planning strategically for community development;

• using performance metrics to achieve continuous improvement; and

• committing to higher ethical standards

The leadership and management decisions made by SLGM members in hundreds of communities affect thousands of individuals across Alberta. Committed members practicing quality professional management is the key to success of the Society of Local Government Managers.

Make Local Government Your Career Destination.

INTERNATIONAL WORK – STUDY - TRAVEL EXPERIENCE • R U interested in traveling or living abroad? • R U interested in working while you travel & explore? • R U interested in studying in a foreign land, possibly for credit?

There are many ways to gain international/travel experience and the benefits are many:

• learning new things via new experiences, challenges & info • developing confidence in yourself and your abilities • having fun, seeing new places, meeting new people & enjoying

different cultures/experiences GETTING STARTED: 1. EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS by researching programs -- as a student, check with UofL Career &

Employment Services for reputable programs that are advertised through their office. 2. Check with the UofL 'INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR STUDENTS' Office- as they have experience

working with programs & Universities world wide, and can assist you with your research on options, contacts and possible 'credit' links to your school/programs.

3. COLLECT FACTS - research each program (work, study, teaching ESL abroad). By checking every detail ie. their history, length of existence, reputation and connections with Universities/ Colleges, you are gaining information about their program quality & legitimacy.

4. COMPARE PROGRAMS - look at each program in terms of qualifications & requirements (including work/study/travel VISAs) to find those that fit your needs. Also examine each for comparable cost, arrangement details, & if the organization provides support with training, accommodation, travel, and assistance along the way (before, during & after). Check with Canadian resource people/programs for information to start.

5. TALK TO PEOPLE - Call programs directly to ask good questions, confirm details & get direct information about the credibility of their program. Ask for names or ways to talk to people who have participated in their programs directly - as this 'real information' is the best way to sort through options & issues that are causing questions.

6. COMPARE WAGE &/or CONTRACT &/or PROGRAM DETAILS - look carefully over the details regarding length of program/contract, renewal possibility, work/study visa requirements, tasks/duties, and other features so that you are aware of all facts & issues that are important. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to research each program & all details before taking part…all your effort will be worth it in the long run!

GREAT RESOURCES: • !"#$%&'()*+'www.travelcuts.com • GapYearAbroad: Volunteering abroad http://www.gapyearabroad.ca/ • ,-./0',*)1%2*'-3"4'.5"3#1'/"36"#7+''8**90::;;;<+;#9<=#:' • >olunteer Abroad www.volunteerabroad.ca • Dave’s ESL Café www.eslcafe.com • !%#=8'?26&@+8'.5"3#1'8**90::;;;<32&@2%*%A&<=37 • WUSC (World University Service of Canada) www.wusc.ca • Rooftops Canada www.rooftops.ca • Canadian International Development Agency 8**90::;;;<#=1@B=@1#<6=<=#: • The Canadian Bureau for International Education www.cbie.ca • Careers Abroad 8**90::;;;<=#"%%"+#5"3#1<=3<)4:' • Charity Village www.charityvillage.com • Canada World Youth www.cwy-jcm.org
