Code of Conduct for the Segway PT®

Always remember that you are representing others. Your ability to maintain a professional and responsible code of conduct while riding a Segway PT will benefit not only you, but the other members of your group and the whole of the Segway community.

Always be prepared to stop.

Always be aware of the space the Segway PT requires.

Do not carry any passengers or tow or push a trailer, vehicle, or other object.

Always ride under control at a speed that is safe for you and

those around you.

Do not allow others to drive or ride the Segway PT.

Always wear a helmet when riding the Segway PT.

Respect pedestrians by always yielding the right of way.

Comply with all laws. This includes your agency’s Standard Operating Procedures.

Ride safely. Avoid obstacles, slippery surfaces, loose materials

and steep slopes.

Avoid startling pedestrians. When approaching from behind, announce yourself and slow down to walking speed when passing.

Code of Conduct for the Segway PT

In heavy traffic, slow down and proceed at the pace of the crowd.

Pass only if there is ample space to do so safely. Do not weave

in and out of pedestrian traffic.

When riding with others maintain a safe distance and identify hazards and obstacles. Do not ride side by side unless there is plenty of room left for pedestrians.

Do not park your Segway PT in a way that blocks pedestrian

traffic.

Do not use your Segway PT as a toy with which to perform tricks or stunts.

Explanation of Pre-Ride Checklist RM refers to the Reference Manual for Segway Personal Transporter GSM refers to the Getting Started Manual for Segway Personal Transporter 1. Segway Inc sets weight limits for two reasons:

a) Rider Safety b) To reduce the risk of damage to the Segway PT

Optimum weight limits = 100-260 lbs (rider plus all cargo) ***The heavier the load the slower the Segway PT response time. ***

Exceeding the weight limits, especially when combined with other variables that require more power, will increase your risk of falling or damaging the Segway PT. If the rider is below the minimum rider weight limit, he may not be able to ride safely because he cannot shift his weight back far enough to safely slow down and stop. This is especially true when riding downhill. (R.M. pgs.5, 8 and 9)

2. StreetSmart Training recommends that you always wear a helmet when riding.

Use an approved helmet that fits properly with the chin strap in place, and provides protection for the back of your head.(GSM pg. 3)

3. This area may be indoors or outdoors and should be of adequate size to perform

requested maneuvers. It must have a level, smooth riding surface with good traction and should be free of obstructions and away from vehicles, bicycles, pets, small children, and other distractions.

4. Adjust the height of the upper LeanSteer Frame by pulling up on the Handlebar

until the Handlebar is just above your elbow or higher while you are standing on the floor and the Powerbase is level. Tighten the Height Adjustment Knob to prevent loss of control due to unexpected height change while riding. (GSM pg. 26)

5. The Speed Limiter is an alert that you are moving too fast. When the Segway PT

pushes the Handlebar back, stop leaning forward and slow down. While the Segway PT is designed to keep you upright under a variety of conditions, you can overpower the balancing capability of your Segway PT by aggressively leaning into and ignoring the Speed Limiter. (GSM pgs. 36-37)

6. Using the InfoKey Controller, power on your Segway PT by pressing the

Power/Standby button which is located on the bottom left-hand side of the Info Key. (GSM pg. 63)

7. The Segway PT has four sensors located beneath the Mats (two on each side,

under the toes and heals). Rider Detect Sensors detect the presence or absence of a rider while the Segway PT is powered on. (GSM pg. 48)

8. When the Segway PT is ready to enter Balance Mode, the center Balance Indicator light will light up green. Tap the Mats with your foot to enter Balance Mode. Do not step on the unit yet. (GSM pg 68) Never step on the Segway PT until all Balance Indicator lights are green.

9. Remember, the Segway PT will move forward, backward or turn if you move the

Handlebar. Avoid pushing, pulling, or leaning the Handlebar as you step on. Step on with one foot, then the next. (GSM pgs. 70-73)

10. The Segway PT moves forward and backward in response to changes in your

position. (Lean forward and shift your weight more toward your toes to move forward. Lean backward and shift weight towards your heels to move backward. Centering your weight will allow you to stay still.) Avoid rocking back and forth or shifting your weight abruptly, as this could result in a loss of traction and cause a fall. (GSM pgs. 77-80)

11. Slowly pivot the Handlebar to the side in the direction that you want to turn. The

Segway PT will rotate so that you turn in place. (GSM pg 84)

12. Stop the Segway PT by shifting your weight away from the direction you are moving. Stopping abruptly, especially on slippery surfaces, can cause the Segway PT tires to lose traction, and you could fall. (GSM pgs 80-81)

13. Without leaning backward or to the side, step off the Segway PT, one foot at a

time. Be careful not to pull back or turn the Handle bar while you are stepping off the Segway PT. (GSM pg 88-89)

14. Power off the Segway PT by pressing and holding the Power/Standby button on

the InfoKey Controller for two seconds. (GSM pg 96)

15. Always perform a controlled stop. Avoid abrupt stops. Come to a controlled stop by gently shifting your weight away from the direction of movement. (GSM pg 83)

16. Keep your knees slightly bent and lean in the direction of the turn in coordination

with the angle of the LeanSteer Frame. Keep your body aligned with the LeanSteer Frame while turning. (GSM pg 86)

17. When your feet are properly positioned on the Mats, all four Rider Detect sensors

depress, allowing the Segway PT to operate normally in Balance Mode. If fewer than three sensors are depressed while riding, the Segway PT reduces the top speed limit. Never Place anything on the Mats except your feet. Doing so could interfere with the rider Detect Sensors and allow the Segway PT to travel on its own. (RM pgs 41, 42) The Rider Detect Sensors will also detect when a rider is not on the Mats and will travel about 6-8 feet on its own before exiting Balance Mode causing the Segway PT to fall.

18. To carry cargo, use a cargo accessory that is recommended by Segway Inc. The

total weight of any Handlebar payload plus any other attachments hanging from the Handlebar should not exceed 10 pounds. (GSM pg 117)

19. The hard case weight limit is 11 lbs each. (Segway PT Cargo assembly instructions)

20. When the Beginner setting is on (Turtle Mode), the top forward speed and steering rate are slower. When Normal Mode is on, the maximum top speed is 12.5 miles per hour and the steering responds faster. (GSM pg 9)

21. To enable the Security Function, tap the Security button. The Security icon (lock)

will show in the Display. To disable the Security Function, tap the Security button. The Segway PT will only accept these commands when no rider on the Mats. (RM pg 30)

22. Error Codes are found on the top portion of the InfoKey (where the time and date

are displayed). Error Codes will begin with a letter (usually an E) followed by three numbers. When you receive an error code, you should always document what happened, note the error code, and contact your Logistics Officer who then notifies your local dealer. Error Codes are subject to change without notice.

23. Some functions on the InfoKey will not work when the Rider Detect Sensors are

depressed (rider on the Mats). You cannot change in or out of Beginner Mode, turn on or off the unit, or engage the Security Feature. When there is a rider on the Mats, you can scroll through available information on the Information Display Button. Depressing the Beginner Button while on the Mats will turn on the backlight for the InfoKey.

24. The Segway PT balances front to back but not side-to-side. You are responsible

for maintaining side-to-side balancing by leaning into turns. If you fail to actively maintain this side-to-side balance, the Segway PT can tip sideways and fall. (GSM pg 57)

25. Trips occur when the Segway PT Wheel or Powerbase encounters an obstacle or

terrain change that prevents the Segway PT from moving, bringing it to an abrupt stop and potentially causing a fall. Always use caution when riding over terrain changes. (GSM pg 56)

26. The Segway PT Tires must be able to grip the ground for the machine to stay

upright. Slips occur when the Segway PT loses traction, potentially causing loss of control and a fall. Abrupt maneuvers, and riding over slippery surfaces, loose objects and materials, or steep slopes can cause the Segway PT to lose traction. (GSM pg 54)

27. The Segway PT’s unique balancing ability and ease of use can lead you to become

overconfident. If you exceed the ability of the Segway PT to balance, such as riding over obstacles, uneven terrain, slippery surfaces, loose materials, or steep slopes, you can very quickly lose control, leading to collisions, falls, and injury. (GSM pg 108)

28. The typical range of the Segway PT i2 is 16-24 miles on a full charge. The typical range of the Segway PT x2 is 9-12 miles on a full charge. (RM pg 5)

29. The range of your Segway PT is affected by many variables, including: Terrain,

Speed and Riding Style, Tire Inflation Pressure, Rider Weight and Cargo, Temperature, Battery Condition, and Wind. (RM pg 11)

30. Fully charge the Segway PT Batteries for at least 12 hours, once a month, or

after every 12 hours of operation-whichever comes first. Charge your Batteries only when they are within the specified charging temperature range of 50°F to 122°F. Make certain the charge port is clean and dry before plugging in to charge. (RM pgs 63-64)

Riding Considerations

Your posture and stance affect your ability to ride safely:

• Be alert. Scan both far ahead and in front of the wheels. Your eyes are your best tool for safely avoiding obstacles and slippery surfaces.

• Look ahead, not down. Use your peripheral vision. Looking down changes your

center of gravity and as a result, your sense of balance.

• Relax. Keep a firm grip on the handlebar, your legs loose and your knees and elbows bent. This helps you maintain balance over rough terrain.

The Segway PT is highly maneuverable and allows you to easily navigate around obstacles.

• Avoid hazards. Some responses of the Segway PT are instantaneous and there is no time for a Safety Alert to warn you. In these cases, you will most likely lose your balance and fall. The best choice is to avoid slips, trips, and tips.

• Maintain tire contact with the ground. The tires must be able to grip the ground

for the machine to stay upright. If airborne, upon landing you would probably lose control and fall.

• Know the limits of the machine. The Segway PT will generally go up a 26% grade but not for all riders or in all conditions. Avoid riding across steep slopes. When riding across gentle slopes, keep the LeanSteer Frame vertical and aligned with your body. You must always use caution when riding over any terrain change.

• Stairs: Never ride the unit down stairs. Stand above and in front of the Segway PT while in Riderless Balance mode.

If…

• you hear a “clicking” sound when riding: stop, step off the unit, power it off, and perform routine LeanSteer Frame adjustment

• you are unable to power on your Segway PT or power off when it is on, the

most likely cause is a dead InfoKey battery, or stuck Rider Detection Sensor.

Segway PT

Components and

Subsystems (how it works)

InfoKey • Must be within 15 ft. in order to communicate with your Segway PT. • Do NOT drop. Treat the InfoKey as you would a nice water-resistant watch • To switch from Balance Mode to Standby Mode, tap the power button. • Press and hold the Turtle Button to turn on the Backlight. • The Security Button, Power Button and Beginner Button will work only when

no rider is on the unit. • When you replace or reseat the InfoKey Battery, all information will revert to

the default setting. Trip and average speed will reset to zero, but the odometer will NOT reset. The InfoKey battery lasts about one year.

Handlebar / LeanSteer Frame

• Handlebar / LeanSteer Frame maximum weight limit is 10 lbs. • Adjust Handlebar to correct rider height and tighten. • LeanSteer Frame only moves you left and right. • Keep your body aligned with the LeanSteer Frame. • Always leave a gap between your body and the LeanSteer Frame.

Tire / Wheel Assembly

• Keep tires inflated to 15 psi for i2 ~ 4 psi for x2 Charge and Balance Indicator Lights

• Never step on a unit when you have a red light. • The forward charge light represents the front battery while the back charge

light represents the rear battery. • Never let go of the unit while in Balance Mode unless leaning against

something. • You are in Balance mode/Riderless Balance mode when all lights are

rotating/pulsing green and the InfoKey displays a Happy Face. Mats

• There are 4 sensors located beneath the Mats (under heels and toes). At least 3 sensors must be depressed while riding to maintain Balance Mode.

• Never place anything other than your feet on the Mats. (You could have a runaway Segway PT.)

Battery Management

(why one rider will use up more battery than another) The Segway PT i2 will travel a range of up to 16-24 miles, the Segway PT x2 will travel a range of up to 12 miles, on a full charge, with a weight range of 100-260 lbs and ridden within the specified temperature range of 32°F - 122°F on fairly level surfaces. To conserve battery, the unit will shut itself off after 15 minutes of being in Stand-by mode. Variables that require more power include: • Higher payloads (weight of rider and all cargo). • Steeper slopes. • Bumpier surface conditions. • Higher speeds. • Abrupt maneuvers. • Temperature Things to consider when planning riding times:

• Terrain: Riding on smooth, flat terrain improves range, and riding on hilly terrain and unpaved surfaces reduces range. Because of the regenerative braking system, the Segway PT will charge the batteries when going downhill.

• Speed and Riding Style: Riding at a consistent, moderate speed will increase range while frequent starting, stopping, acceleration, and deceleration reduce range.

• Tire Inflation Pressure: Riding with tire pressures below the specified limit

(15 psi for i2 / 4 psi for x2) reduces range.

• Rider Weight and Cargo: Lighter riders with less cargo experience better range than heavier riders with more cargo.

• Temperature: Storing, charging, and riding in temperatures close to the

median of the recommended temperature range improves range. Riding in colder temperatures reduces range significantly.

• Battery Condition: Properly charged and maintained batteries provide

greater range. Old, cold, heavily used, or poorly maintained batteries provide less range. Remember to ALWAYS keep batteries in pairs.

• Wind: Riding with a tailwind increases range. Riding against a headwind

reduces range.

Because of the ‘duty to respond’, when the InfoKey shows 2 bars on the battery level, you must charge or swap out your batteries.

Understanding the Safety Alerts (know how to respond BEFORE you ride the Segway PT)

Speed Limiter

When you approach the maximum allowed speed, the Segway PT Speed Limiter will push the Handlebar back to slow you down. Always leave a gap between yourself and the Handlebar.

Conditions that may cause the Speed Limiter to activate even though you might not be traveling at the maximum speed:

• Riding up a hill • Riding on a bumpy terrain • Riding with fewer than 3 Rider Detect Sensors depressed • The first few seconds after you power on and step on the Powerbase • Low battery charge • Batteries that are too hot or too cold • Riding down a hill with fully charged batteries (due to regenerative

charging) • Unequal or incorrect tire pressure

The Segway PT is operating at reduced performance levels due to a temporary condition. The speed limit has been lowered until the condition clears.

Understanding the Safety Alerts (know how to respond BEFORE you ride the Segway PT)

Stick Shake Warning

One of the ways that the Segway PT notifies you when you are at risk of falling is by shaking the Handlebar and making growling noises. The Stick Shake Warning can occur in conjunction with, or independent of the Speed Limiter and Safety Shutdown alert, depending on your riding situation. If you are given a Stick Shake Warning you must stop doing what you are doing and evaluate the cause of the warning. Step off immediately and clear all obstacles if necessary.

Possible causes of the Stick Shake Warning with a rider on the Mats.

• Riding aggressively, accelerating or stopping abruptly • Riding against the Handlebar causing you to demand too much power • Riding on rough terrain or steep slopes causing you to demand too much

power • Riding against an obstruction such as a door frame or curb that stops the

wheel while you continue to demand too much power • Riding backwards too quickly • Safety Shutdown has begun

Possible causes of Stick Shake Warning with no rider on the Mats.

• Moving a Segway PT too quickly with no rider on the Powerbase while in Riderless Balance Mode

• Stepping on the Segway PT when it is powered on, but not ready for you to step on

• If the wheels spin as you pull the Segway PT over a curb or up stairs

The Stick Shake Warning is more likely to occur when your batteries are low, cold, heavily used, or poorly maintained because there is less energy available to keep you balanced.

Understanding the Safety Alerts (know how to respond BEFORE you ride the Segway PT)

Safety Shutdown

If the Segway PT detects a fault in any of its redundant systems, it performs a Safety Shutdown. Those systems include: Controller Boards, Motors, Batteries, the Balance Sensor Assembly, and LeanSteer Sensors.

You have approximately 10 seconds from the start of a Safety Shutdown to

come to a controlled stop and step off.

• Never restart and ride your Segway PT after it has indicated an empty battery condition or performed Safety Shutdown due to low battery. The Segway PT may not have enough power to keep you balanced, especially if you demand a lot of power at once.

• You risk damaging your batteries, resulting in reduced battery life and capacity.

• Theft detection systems can interfere with the ability of the Segway PT to keep you balanced and/or causes a Safety Shutdown. Do NOT ride within 5 feet of any theft detection system.

When a Safety Shutdown occurs, the Segway PT automatically reduces its speed, gives the Stick Shake Warning, flashes the Balance Indicator lights, emits a warning tone, and the InfoKey Controller displays an unhappy face.
