UW MILWAUKEE ATHLETICS UPDATE

SPORT RESPONSIBILITIES

• Kelly Diener: Women’s Basketball, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Track and Field, Women’s Volleyball

• Nicole McCoy: Baseball, Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving, Women’s Track and Field

• Chris Hill: Men’s Basketball

SPRING 2012 CERTIFICATION

• Updated Form• Added a column for course grade requirement• Added a question (7) regarding intended major change

• Improved Accuracy• Holds/Service Indicators

• Process• Athletics completes the student-athlete information and

classes• Athletics provides transcripts and certification forms to

each college’s advising department• Advisors complete the certification forms and sends them

to Athletics or notifies Athletics for the pick-up• Athletics follows-up with advising departments to collect

completed forms

CERTIFICATION TIMELINE

• April 2, Certification forms will be prepared by Athletics for each student-athlete

• May 1, Athletics will distribute certification forms to advisors

• May 11, A hold is placed on all registered student-athlete’s PAWS accounts

• May 23, Due date for Certification Forms

• May 29, First day of Summer Session I

HOLDS/SERVICE INDICATORS

Purpose: Disallow unguided changes to student-athletes’ schedules

Goals: 1.Encourage advising and registration2.Improve certification process 3.Decrease number of student-athletes with Progress Toward Degree issues4.Increase graduation and retention rates

PRE-CERTIFICATION FALL 2012

• Proactive approach to certification• Allows us to certify the current classes as well as

the chosen classes• Timeline for Certification: Fall Final Exams

through the week before classes resume in January (roughly 5 weeks)• January 2013, certification for Fall 2012 and

Spring 2013• May 2013, certification for Fall 2013

Who has the power to place or lift the student-athlete hold?-DES -Academic Advisors-Athletic Advisors-Athletic Compliance Officer

When will the hold on student-athletes’ accounts be lifted?-The hold will be lifted prior to registration and re-activated the first week of final exams.

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

• Athletics Involvement in NSO 2012:• Meet with incoming student-athletes prior to registration

• Provide practice schedules, competition reminders, and permission code for Ed Psy 101 for student-athletes

• Provide athletic administrators’ contact information

• Review student-athlete’s schedules and place the administrative hold
