INTRODUCTION

Jo Estill, creator of Estill Voice Training (EVT), believed that “everyone has a beautiful voice” and that given adequate instruction this voice could be “discovered”. The central mission of Estill Voice International (EVI) is to make effective voice training accessible to everyone by supporting the messengers of Estill Voice Training, its EVT Representatives. EVI offers educational products and services to make this mission a reality. The Certification Program is one such service.

Certified EVT representatives are recognized internationally for their extensive knowledge of the voice and for their innovative teaching techniques. An elite group, EVT representatives are distinguished by their abilities to use scientific principles in the service of art.

Central to the success of these representatives is Estill Voice Training. Developed through extensive research and based upon scientific principles, the Estill Voice Model — the foundation of Estill Voice Training — continues to be refined as research becomes available. Certification assures consistent quality and expertise in the delivery of Estill Voice Training by its representatives thus protecting the integrity of this unique system.

Certification procedures and standards are governed and maintained by Estill Voice International’s Certification Advisory Board and applied consistently in all the countries where EVT is taught. The value of certification through EVI is enhanced by the rigor of its standards.

EVI offers three sequential levels of certification. EVI awards a Certificate of Figure Proficiency (CFP) for individual achievement in demonstration of the basic options for voice control taught in EVI-approved EVT Level One (Figures for Voice Control) and Level Two (Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities) courses. Certified Master Teacher (CMT) status is awarded to individuals who develop a command of EVT theory and practice, and who are able to demonstrate the ability to teach Estill Voice Training in the private studio or classroom setting. Certified Course Instructors (CCI) are EVT teachers who demonstrate advanced understanding of the Estill Voice Model and its applications to voice training and/or remediation. CCIs are promoted as presenters of EVT in public courses and seminars, where they must be prepared for sophisticated discussion of the anatomy, physiology, acoustics, and research that are the foundation of the Estill Voice Model. CFPs, CMTs and CCIs are considered to be Estill Voice Training Representatives, with responsibilities, rights, and privileges.

Once a person has been certified at any level, he or she has the right to list that certification in their curriculum vitae and promotional biographical descriptions. The rights and privileges of certification remain in force for as long as the certificate holder remains in good standing with EVI and meets the continuing education and ethical requirements that pertain to their level of certification.

The certification levels, requirements, terms, additional honors and privileges, and course administration procedures are detailed in this manual.

A. EVT-Certificate of Figure Proficiency (CFP)

1. Overview: EVI awards a Certificate of Figure Proficiency (CFP) to individuals who can demonstrate the basic options for voice control taught in EVI-approved EVT Level One (Compulsory Figures for Voice Control) and Level Two (Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities) courses.

a. Prerequisites: The CFP examination process is open to anyone who has completed the EVT Level One and Two Course curricula.

b. Examination Process: The CFP examination typically takes 1-2 hours and can be administered by any Certified Course Instructor.

2. Benefits a. Certificate: Once requirements are met, EVI will issue a Certificate of Figure Proficiency.

b. EVT Extranet Access: Individuals who have earned the CFP are given access to the Estill Voice Training Representative Extranet (EVT Extranet) through the “EVT Rep Login” at www.EstillVoice.com. On the EVT Extranet, they are able to update their contact information, pay the annual EVT Extranet account maintenance fee, and register for CMT examinations should they choose to pursue CMT qualification.

c. Directory Listing: The CFP recipient will have his or her name and location listed on www.EstillVoice.com (http://www.estillvoice.com/Instructors/cfp). This information will appear in the CFP directory as long as the recipient maintains his or her EVT Extranet account with Estill Voice International.

3. Termsa. Certification Term: There is no expiration for the CFP. Continuing education is encouraged

but not required.

b. Scope of Certification: The individual with a CFP is permitted to list it in curriculum vitae and personal biographical writings. If the individual is a private voice trainer or therapist, he or she may use Estill Voice Training in this work, however, he or she is not permitted to present Estill Voice Training Workshops or Courses.

c. Annual Fee: There is a certification fee due upon award of the CFP. CFP recipients retain their EVT Extranet account access for as long as they remain in good financial and ethical standing with Estill Voice International. Policies and procedures for payment of fees can be found in Section VII.

4. Requirements a. Complete both EVT Level One and Two Course Curricula: This requirement can be met

in public courses, academic courses, and/or private study with a Certified Master Teacher or Certified Course Instructor in good standing (see www.EstillVoice.com/Instructors/Search). Certificates of Attendance or letters stipulating completion of this requirement should be presented prior to testing.

b. Gain Proficiency in EVT Option Demonstration: Note that it may be necessary to work through courses more than once and/or to receive private tutoring from an EVI-Certified Master Teacher or Course Instructor to gain sufficient proficiency in the option demonstration. The CFP applicant is encouraged to purchase Estill Voiceprint Plus to use when preparing for the examination.

c. Schedule Estill Voiceprint Examination: The CFP applicant may contract with any Certified Course Instructor to schedule the examination. Per EVI policy, testing fees associated with the CCI’s time and scoring of the examination should be clearly communicated prior to testing.

d. Register for Testing with EVI: At least one week prior to testing, the individual seeking a CFP must register with EVI. This can be done by going to the “Store” on www.EstillVoice.com and selecting the Registration page. When the “Register” button beneath “CFP Testing” has been selected, a form will appear to collect name, contact, billing, CFP examiner, and course attendance information. Payment of the Testing Registration Fee completes this process and establishes the CFP applicant’s account on the EVT Extranet. An email will be sent with instructions for logging in to the EVT Extranet.

e. Pass the Basic Options for Voice Control Examination: The CFP applicant will be asked to record voiceprints of the CFP Testing Protocol (See Section IV.A.2) during the examination. The examining CCI will use visual and auditory judgments to evaluate the applicant’s success in demonstrating the structural options.

5. Passing Criteriaa. Estill Voiceprint Plus Plus Protocol: A correct production of each CFP Voiceprint Protocol

task must be recorded within 3 trials.

b. Repeat Examinations: The applicant will be given an opportunity to repeat any portion of the exam that did not meet the passing criteria. (See re-test terms and conditions in Section II.B.6). The applicant will be expected to negotiate scheduling and fees for any repeat testing with the examining Certified Course Instructor.

6. Post-Examination Proceduresa. Review Benefits and Terms: Once the CFP examination has been successfully completed,

the examining CCI will review the Benefits and Terms for the Certificate of Figure Proficiency with the new recipient including the CFP Certification Letter of Agreement.

B. Certified Master Teacher (CMT) of Estill Voice Training

1. Overview: EVI awards Certified Master Teacher (CMT) status to those who qualify to train others in all of the elements and concepts of Estill Voice Training. Not only must these individuals be able to convincingly demonstrate all of the Figures for Voice from Level One and the Six Voice Qualities from Level Two, they must also be able to explain the complexities of the anatomy, physiology, and acoustics that pertain to the human voice in general and Estill Voice Training in particular. In addition, CMTs must demonstrate the skill to analyze common vocal “problems” and propose appropriate Figure “solutions”. Consistent with the Craft-based philosophy of the Estill Voice Model, Estill Voice International certifies only competence to communicate Estill Voice Training curriculum content and exercises.

a. Prerequisites: Those considering becoming CMTs must first earn the Certificate of Figure Proficiency. At a minimum, they must have completed two Level One and Two courses offered to the public or in academic settings where the complete Estill Voice Training curriculum is presented (Workbooks, Course Presentation Slides, Research Videos, and Estill Voiceprint Plus). Additional study will be required to succeed in becoming a Certified Master Teacher. Options for further study include attending additional Level One and/or Two courses, participating in Advanced Workshops (including those offered specifically for individuals pursuing certification), or private study with a CCI. Applicants should discuss their aspirations with one or more CCIs who might serve as their official Mentor through the CMT qualifying process.

b. Privileges: CMTs are promoted as skilled teachers of Estill Voice Training. CMTs typically teach in a private studio or office setting, or in a classroom within a school or university. CMTs are permitted to purchase certain EVT teaching materials for use by their students that are not available to the general public.

c. Examination Process: The CMT assessment process is conducted in two phases:

i. Phase One Formal Examinations: Written and Estill Voiceprint Plus Plus examinations can be completed in approximately ½ day and can be administered by a Certified Course Instructor who has been given Testing Privileges (CCI-TP). Upon successful completion of Phase One examinations, the CMT applicant is considered a “CMT-Candidate (CMT-C)” and he/she can proceed with Phase Two.

ii. Phase Two Direct Observation of Teaching: The Phase Two assessment of teaching proficiency requires that the CMT-Candidate be observed teaching all the Figures and Qualities included in EVT Level One and Two courses. At least 2 CCIs must observe these teaching demonstrations. This requirement can be met by leading practice groups at EVI-approved courses or by arranging for observations

in private studio or classroom settings. Phase Two observations will continue until the candidate has been passed on his or her teaching of every element and concept in the EVT curriculum.

2. Benefits a. Certificate: After all requirements have been met, EVI will issue a Certified Master Teacher

certificate.

b. Website Listing: The CMT will have his or her own page on www.EstillVoice.com with contact information, 150 word biography, picture, and link to other personal website/s, as available.

c. Access to Materials: The CMT may purchase and distribute EVT course workbooks, Figures in a Flash, Estill Voiceprint Plus, and the Make-and-Move Larynx, for use with their students in a studio or classroom setting. The CMT may also purchase the Course Instruction Manual (for personal use only).

d. EVT Extranet Account Upgrade: The CMT’s account on the EVT Representative Extranet will continue to provide access to “My Profile” and “Renew My Certification” pages. In addition, the CMT will have access to the Estill Store (with EVT Representative discounts), marketing materials (logos and bugs), as well as course promotion and production materials. Access to the EVT Representative Extranet and listing on EstillVoice.com will continue as long as the CMT remains in good standing with Estill Voice International and meets continuing education requirements.

e. E-Updates (Estill Updates): The CMT will automatically receive periodic email newsletters that are designed to provide communication from EVI to its EVT Representatives.

f. Promotion: EVI offers and promotes several opportunities for joint marketing including business cards, web bugs and traditional advertising.

g. Beta Testing: The CMT may be given opportunities to contribute to product definition and design during the beta testing period prior to public release.

h Voting Privileges: The CMT is permitted to participate in nomination and voting for the EVT Certification Advisory Board. In addition, the CMT is permitted to nominate candidates for the Estill Lifetime Achievement Award (ELAA). (See Section I.F).

i. EVT Certification Advisory Board Eligibility: The CMT is eligible to be nominated for and to serve on the EVT Certification Advisory Board. EVT Certification Advisory Board Members serve four year terms.

3. Terms a. Certification Term: Once a person has been certified at any level, he or she has the right to

list that certification in their curriculum vitae and promotional biographical descriptions. EVT Representative certification privileges – including access to the EVT Representative Extranet, the right to access and display EVT graphics, and a listing on EstillVoice.com

-- remain in force as long as the CMT remains in good financial standing with Estill Voice International and remains compliant with the policies outlined below. Only CMTs meeting these criteria are listed on www.EstillVoice.com.

b. Scope of Certification: The CMT is permitted to use Estill Voice Training in the private studio, office or classroom setting. The CMT may purchase and distribute selected EVT teaching materials not available to the general public for use by their students. The CMT is not permitted to teach public EVT courses. The CMT may teach practice groups, promotional workshops, and present Estill Voice Training content at professional meetings or conferences. (see Section I.B.3.f )

c. Advertising: CMTs are considered EVT Representatives and may advertise and promote themselves as private teachers of EVT. EVT Logos and Certification “Bugs” are available on the EVT Extranet in electronic format for use in either print or web-based media. If a CMT has a business/personal website, he or she must acknowledge EVT Certification on the website with a prominent link back to www.EstillVoice.com.

d. Class Teaching: When a CMT is a member of a school faculty and that institution plans to offer a Level One or Level Two Course as a part of their ongoing curriculum, the CMT may apply to EVI for permission to use materials otherwise available only to CCIs. Approvals will be made on a case by case basis, and with consultation of the CMT’s supervisory and mentoring CCIs. Students in these courses may be eligible to recieve official certificates of attendance with prior approval from EVI.

f. EVT Promotion: CMTs presenting in professional conferences or meetings on non-EVT topics are encouraged to acknowledge the role Estill Voice Training has played in their development as voice professionals, and are encouraged to display their Estill credentials as well as their bug and/or the EVT logo. They are not permitted to display the Estill Voice International logo. When presenting aspects of Estill Voice Training at professional meetings, the CMT must acknowledge his/her level of certification and cite all Estill source material. When preparing for presentations at international conferences, the CMT is strongly encouraged to consult his or her mentoring CCI-TP. EVI is also available to assist the CMT in planning and provide him or her with EVT graphics. EVI requests advanced notification of all presentations at international conferences so that these events can be promoted on www.EstillVoice.com. Royalty and graphics preparation fees for use of EVI intellectual property may apply, particularly when printed materials are distributed to conference participants.

g. Continuing Education: Specific continuing education activities are not required of CMTs, although they are enjoined by the Code of Ethics “to remain abreast of new developments in Estill Voice Training through both educational activities and professional experience.”

h. Annual Certification Fee: CMT fees must be paid annually to sustain a certification account in good standing with EVI. CMTs retain their certification privileges for as long as they remain in good financial and ethical standing with Estill Voice International. Policies and procedures for payment of fees can be found in Section VII.

m. Non-Compliance: A method for review of complaints regarding representatives and for

non-compliance issues has been established by EVI. Issues that require review include misrepresentation of certification level, lack of adherence to EVI’s Code of Ethics, failure to pay fees, public use of Estill intellectual property without prior approval from EVI, and failure to submit requested materials or payments in a timely fashion. Further details regarding this review process can be found in Section III.A.-C. of this Manual

4. Qualifications and Requirements for Phase Onea. Earn the Certificate of Figure Proficiency: The CMT applicant is required to complete the

Certificate of Figure Proficiency.

b. Attend Two EVI-approved EVT Level One & Two Courses: It is required that individuals seeking CMT certification attend both Level One & Two Courses at least twice in settings where the complete Estill Voice Training curriculum is presented (Workbooks, Course Presentation Slides, Research Videos, and Estill Voiceprint Plus). This requirement can be met in courses offered to the public, or, in academic settings that meet the criteria above. It is strongly suggested that the applicant participate/attend courses taught by different CCIs. Copies of Attendance Certificates for Level One and Two Courses and/or Advanced Workshops, as well as letters attesting private study, must be produced prior to administration of Phase One examinations.

c. Find a CCI-TP Mentor: Although an individual pursuing certification as a CMT must be observed by more than one CCI through the process of achieving certification, he or she is required to find a single CCI-TP who is willing to mentor them through the process and who will serve as their primary contact person for registration with Estill Voice International.

d. Register Intent to Pursue Certification as a Certified Master Teacher: The CMT seeking to become a CMT must register this intent with EVI and pay their CMT Testing Registration fees in advance. This process can be competed from the EVT Extranet via the CFP recipient’s account access. The CMT applicant should log in to the EVT Extranet and select “Register for CMT Testing”. Save your payment receipt to present to CCI-TP prior to testing. (For Payment Policies, see Section VII.)

e. Gain Proficiency in EVT Concepts and Figure Demonstration: In order to gain sufficient personal mastery of the Figures, Qualities, and Estill Voice Model principles and applications to pass the CMT Phase One Examinations, it will be necessary to study and practice outside the context of EVT Level One and Two Courses. Options for further study include participation in Advanced Workshops (including those offered specifically for individuals pursuing certification), and/or in private tutoring from the CCI-TP Mentor or other CMTs and CCIs. The CMT applicant is required to purchase Estill Voiceprint Plus to practice for this segment of the examination if he or she has not already done so. A CMT Study Guide can be found beginning in Section IV.B.

f. Schedule Phase One Examinations: When the CMT applicant is prepared to take the Phase One Formal Examinations, he or she must find a Certified Course Instructor who has been given Testing Privileges (CCC-TP) to administer the examinations. It is suggested that the tester be a CCI-TP other than the mentor. Per EVI policy, testing fees associated with the CCI-TP’s time and scoring of the examinations should be clearly communicated

prior to testing.

f. Pass the Compulsory Figures and Six Voice Qualities Voiceprint Exam: The CMT applicant will be asked to record voiceprints of the CMT Testing Protocol (Section IV.B.2.) during the examination. The examining CCI-TP will use visual and auditory judgments to evaluate the applicant’s success in demonstration of the structural options.

g. Pass the CMT Written Examination: The CMT applicant must demonstrate proficiency by accurately responding to questions drawn from the subject areas listed below. Although the CMT applicant is encouraged to consult outside sources, questions will only test for knowledge of the information presented in Level One and Two Courses:

i. Anatomy: EVT-relevant anatomical structures.

ii. Physiology: Biological functions of laryngeal, respiratory and pharyngeal musculature.

iii. EVT: Physiology of the Figures for Voice Control and Six Voice Qualities.

iv. Acoustics: Read spectrograms and label pertinent acoustic features.

v. Solving Common Vocal Problems: Listen to a sound sample of singers and speakers demonstrating “common problems” and identify one possible “Figure Solution”.

5. Phase One-Passing Criteriaa. Written Examination: The CMT applicant must achieve a score of at least 90% on the

written examination.

b. Estill Voiceprint Plus Protocol: A correct production of each task in the CMT Voiceprint Protocol must be recorded within 3 trials.

c. Repeat Examinations: The applicant will be given an opportunity to repeat any portion of the Voiceprint Protocol that did not meet the passing criteria at a later date. If the score on the written examination falls short of passing, the entire written exam must be repeated (see re-test terms and conditions in Section II.B.6). The applicant will be expected to negotiate scheduling and fees for any repeat testing with the examining CCI-TP.

6. Post-Phase One Proceduresa. Complete CMT-Candidate Registration Process: Within one week of successful

completion of the CMT Phase One examinations, the CCI-TP and examinee should complete the following steps:

i. Report Successful Completion of Phase One Testing via E-Mail: Within 1 week of Phase One testing completion, the CCI-TP who passes the CMT applicant should verify successful completion of Phase One Testing for CMT via an email to [email protected]. The candidate’s name, current email, and testing date should appear in this email. EVI will register the CMT-C’s change of status and adjust the EVT Extranet account settings to provide online access to forms and materials

required for Phase Two of the CMT Certification.

ii. Review CMT Observation Packet: The mentoring CCI-TP and the CMT-Candidate should review the CMT Observation Packet (Section V.D.2). This document can be downloaded from the EVT Representative Extranet by either Mentor or CMT-C in electronic or hard copy formats. The CMT Observation Packet guides the candidate through the Phase Two observation process and includes forms that must be filled out as observations are completed. It is the CMT-Candidate’s responsibility to carry this packet from observation to observation and to collect signatures and ratings from each CCI. Tracking and Signature sheets must be presented to EVI upon completion of the Phase-Two requirements.

7. Phase Two Requirements & Additional Information a. Gain Proficiency in Teaching EVT Concepts, Figures, and Qualities: If the CMT-

Candidate does not already have teaching experience, observations of EVT Representatives in classrooms/studios and Practice Groups are strongly suggested. CMT-Candidates are also permitted to purchase Estill Voice Training Level One and Two Course Instruction Manual, a text not available to the general public. The Course Instruction Manual contains valuable advice for those interested in teaching Estill Voice Training. Careful review of its teaching notes and familiarity with the Research Videos will help the CMT-Candidate to prepare for teaching observations. Please note that purchase of the Course Instruction Manual is not a requirement. Participation in Certification Workshops where participants coach one another and receive feedback is encouraged, but these experiences will not meet the observation requirement.

b. Arrange Observations: The CMT-Candidate is required to arrange observations with at least 2 CCIs who are willing to observe CMT-Cs. When the CMT-C feels he or she is ready to be observed teaching the Figures for Voice and Six Voice Qualities the CCI should be contacted. The CMT-Candidate can be observed in context of EVT courses or in the private studio. In order to meet this requirement, the CMT-C must interact with an “Estill Novice” (a student in an EVI-approved Course or Workshop, a student in the CMT-C’s studio who is learning Figures & Qualities). Demonstration teaching to other CMT-Cs in a Certification Workshop will NOT meet this requirement. Authentic teaching of novice students of EVT brought in to a structured observation situation within a certification workshop WOULD meet this requirement. Observations may be live or via video recordings. At least 30% of these observations should be conducted while the candidate is leading practice groups within the context of an EVI-approved course.

c. Observation Expenses: When a CMT-C submits videos for rating, or serves as an Intern on an EVI-approved course, an observation fee will be charged. All observation fees are determined by individual CCIs and should be disclosed and agreed upon prior to the scheduling of any observations. These fees will vary depending upon geographic region. As a general guideline, candidates being observed while interning should expect to pay a minimum of a third of the standard course tuition fee (without discounts). When interning on a course, the CMT-C will also be responsible for travel, lodging, and meal expenses.

d. Prepare for Course Interning: The CMT-Candidate serving as a Course Intern will be expected to take charge of practice sessions. Practice sessions should include a brief review and demonstration of every Figure/Quality assigned for the session as well as providing every course participant with the opportunity for group and individual practice. The intern is also expected to reinforce EVT concepts. Estill terminology, prompts, and Hand Signals should be used throughout the practice session. CMT-C practice group leaders are encouraged to use Figures in a Flash as a resource. Estill Voiceprint Plus should be integrated. Please note that persons who have not passed the CMT Phase One Examinations are not permitted to intern on any EVI-approved courses.

e. Pass the Figures for Voice and Qualities Teaching Assessment: CMT-Candidates must be observed successfully teaching every concept, Figure, and Voice Quality taught in EVI-approved EVT Level One (Figures for Voice Control) and Level Two (Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities) courses. As previously described, the CMT-C can be observed in context of EVT courses or in the private studio.

8. Phase Two Evaluation Process & Pass Criteriaa. Observation Feedback: Although it is preferred that the CMT-C acting as a Course Intern

receive feedback from their observing CCI immediately following a practice session, this is not always possible while a course is running. Verbal feedback should be provided on the day of observation so that the CMT-C can incorporate feedback into practice sessions on subsequent days. Whether observations are live or via video, the observing CCI must provide written feedback to the intern via completed Intern Feedback Forms and a signed Ratings Summary Sheet for that course’s observations within one month of the observation.

It is the CMT-C’s responsibility to collect the CCI’s signature on the Signature Sheet for CMT Observation Experiences, and to update the Tracking Sheet for Competencies Achieved

b. Evaluation: The teaching of each concept, Figure, and Quality will be evaluated using the following ratings: below expectations, meets expectations, or exceeds expectations.

c. Pass Criteria: The CMT-Candidate must accumulate a rating of “meets” or “exceeds” expectations for every concept, Figure, and Quality in order to pass the CMT observation requirements of Phase Two assessment.

d. Time Frame: It is expected that the CMT candidate will require the equivalent of at least 2-3 course observations (at each course level) to pass this level of proficiency.

9. Post-Phase Two ProceduresThe CMT Registration process should be completed by the CMT-Candidate and his or her CCI-TP mentor as soon as possible following the final observations. In some cases, this will involve close coordination with the final CCI Observer (when other than the mentoring CCI-TP). Because of the complexity of this process, the CMT and CCI-TP Mentor are given 30 days from the date of final observation to complete this process.

a. Copy and Review Signature Sheets and Observation Forms: Since more than one

Certified Master Teacher

CCI will have observed the CMT-C through the Phase Two process, it is the CMT-C’s responsibility to provide the CCI-TP Mentor with copies of all Ratings Summary Sheets, Signature Sheets for CMT Observation experiences, and Tracking Sheets for Competencies Achieved. It is the CCI-TP Mentor’s responsibility to review all documentation to confirm that all observation requirements have been met. Both the CCI-TP Mentor AND the new CMT should store these records where they can be easily retrieved. EVI reserves the right to request access to these records at any time.

b. Review Benefits and Terms: Once successful completion of the CMT observation requirements have been verified, the CCI-TP mentor and the CMT-Candidate will review the Benefits and Terms for the Certified Master Teacher as presented in this Manual.

c. Sign Letter of Agreement: The CMT-Candidate and the CCI will sign and submit the EVI Letter of Agreement (Section V.B.) This Letter can be faxed or scanned and submitted to EVI as an email attachment to [email protected].

d. Register the New CMT with EVI:

i. Via E-Mail: The CMT-Candidate will Complete and submit an EVI Contact & Update Form (Section V.A.2) to register Certified Master Teacher (CMT) status and contact and biographical information for website posting.

AND

ii. Via Extranet: The new CMT should also register him or herself through the EVT Extranet from the “Renew My Certification” page. The box by “I am changing my status” should be selected. Selection of the “Register New CMT” option will open a screen to collect further details regarding the change of status and to collect the CMT Annual fee.

e. Pay Annual Fee: Online registration through the EVT Extranet will facilitate payment via credit card or PayPal account. If online access is not available, the new CMT should email an EVI Contact & Update Form (available for download from the “Certification Documents” page of the EVT Extranet) to [email protected] with a request to be invoiced for the certification upgrade Annual Fee. The new CMT must pay this fee to complete the process of becoming a CMT. Policies and procedures for payment of fees can be found in Section VII of this Manual.

f. Receive EVI Acknowledgement: Once the CMT registration process is complete, EVI will:

i. Post CMT’s Information on Website: EVI will post the CMT’s name, contact, and biographical information on EstillVoice.com.

ii. Upgrade EVT Rep Extranet Account Access: When the new Certified Master Teacher’s information is posted on the website, his or her extranet account will be upgraded to provide access to promotional materials and the Estill Store (with EVT Representative discounts).

iii. Send CMT Certificate: EVI will post a CMT certificate to the mailing address provided by the new CMT.

Candidate on the date of his/her observation so that feedback can be acted upon in subsequent course presentations. Written feedback, on the Course Assistant Feedback Form, must be provided within one month.

b. Evaluation: The presentation of each Figure/Quality will be evaluated using the following ratings: below expectations, meets expectations, or exceeds expectations.

c. Pass Criteria: The CCI-Candidate must accumulate ratings of “meets” or “exceeds” expectations for every Figure and Quality in order to pass the CCI observation requirements of the Phase Two Assessment.

d. Time Frame: Although CCI Phase Two requires a minimum of 3 Level One and 3 Level Two courses, more may be necessary to pass the presentation observation requirement.

9. Post-Phase Two ProceduresThe CCI Registration process should be completed by the CCI-Candidate and his or her CCI-TP Mentor as soon as possible following the final observations. In some cases, this will involve close coordination with the final CCI Observer (when other than the mentoring CCI). Because of the complexity of this process, the CCI-C and CCI-TP Mentor are allowed 30 days from the date of final observation to complete this process.

a. Copy and Review Signature Sheets and Observation Forms: Since more than one CCI will have observed the CCI-C through the Phase Two process, it is the CCI-C’s responsibility to provide the CCI-TP Mentor with copies of all Ratings Summary Sheets, Signature Sheets for CCI Observation experiences, and Tracking Sheets for Competencies Achieved. It is the CCI-TP Mentor’s responsibility to review all documentation to confirm that all observation requirements have been met. Both the CCI-TP Mentor AND the new CCI should store these records where they can be easily retrieved. EVI reserves the right to request access to these records at any time.

b. Review Benefits and Terms: After successful completion of the CCI course assisting observation requirements has been verified, the CCI mentor and the CCI-Candidate will review the Benefits and Terms for the Certified Course Instructor as presented in this Manual.

39III. EVT REPRESENTATIVE POLICIES

Similarly, certified representatives shall not use another colleague’s written materials or any other form of another’s intellectual property without that person’s express written consent.

C. Ethics Violations & Grievance Procedures

1. Greivance Registration: When anyone considers an EVT Representative to be in violation of the EVI Code of Ethics, that person is entitled to make a formal written Grievance to any member of the EVT Certification Advisory Board.

2. Grievance Notification: The EVI Certification Advisory Board will notify the EVT Representative whose Ethics have been questioned that a Grievance has been registered via a Return Receipt email. If the message is not opened within one week, notification will be sent via Registered Mail. This Grievance Notification Message will include a description of the Grievance and an invitation for the EVT Representative to respond to the grievance by providing the Board with relevant information for consideration during its Grievance Review Period.

3. Grievance Review: The Grievance Review Period will begin when the Grievance Notification has been received and will extend for up to 3 months, during which information is gathered and considered. During this period, all information provided will be kept in strict confidence between the EVI Certification Advisory Board and the individuals in question. Should the Board find itself in a position where it needs to make inquiries of other parties, confidentiality agreements with those individuals will be obtained prior to any requests for information so that the chain of confidentiality is maintained. The EVI Certification Advisory Board will weigh the evidence for/against the Grievance and render its decision within the 3 month Grievance Review Period.

4. Grievance Determination Report: a. If the Grievance is judged to be invalid, the Board will notify both parties via Return Receipt

email. If the message is not opened within one week, notification will be sent via Registered Mail.

b. If the Grievance is judged to be valid, the Board has the power to impose Sanctions and/or to request Corrective Actions. Sanctions can range from a simple warning to censure, probation, suspension, or even termination of certification privileges. Corrective Actions can be added to any level of sanction as a condition for maintaining/restoring certification privileges. Although both parties will be notified of the Board’s ruling, sanctions and corrective actions will not be communicated to the individual who brought the grievance to the Board. Specific information regarding Sanctions and Corrective Actions will be delivered in a formal document attached to the email sent to the EVT Representative found to be out of compliance. This document will include lines where the EVT Representative can 1) formally acknowledge receipt of the document and 2) formally accept or appeal

Page 46: Certification Manual Version 4 - Estill Voice Training...4 I. CERTIFICATION, AFFILIATION AND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES Certificate of Figure Proficiency 4. Requirements a. Complete both

40 III. EVT REPRESENTATIVE POLICIES

(challenge) its terms. Once again, the notifications and document/s will be delivered via Return Receipt email. If the message is not opened within one week, notification and additional documentation will be sent via Registered Mail.

5. Grievance Determination Receipt: The EVT Representative found out of compliance with EVIs Code of Ethics must formally acknowledge receipt of the Board’s decision. This acknowledgement will be made by signing the Receipt Acknowledgement section of the document and returning it (or a scanned copy) to Estill Voice International within 2 weeks of the email/postal delivery receipt. In cases where the receipt of the decision is not acknowledged within the 2 week time frame, the Certification Advisory Board reserves the right to suspend certification privileges until such time as the signed Receipt Acknowledgement has been returned.

6. Sanction and Corrective Action Acceptance/Appeal: The EVT Representative must formally acknowledge or appeal the Sanction and Corrective Actions (if any) laid out in the document referenced in points 5 & 6 above. This Sanction and Corrective Action Acceptance/Appeal must be communicated within the same time frame as the Receipt Acknowledgement. In cases where there is no response within the 2 week time frame, the Certification Advisory Board reserves the right to suspend certification privileges until such time as this document has been returned. In cases where Sanctions and/or Corrective Actions are challenged, a one month Appeals Process will begin. The Certification Advisory Board reserves the right to suspend certification privileges until such time as a new Sanction/Corrective Action agreement has been negotiated with the EVT Representative in question. This Appeals Process must be resolved in a manner acceptable to both the Board and the Representative within 2 months. If no agreement can be reached, the EVT Representative will lose their certification privileges.

7. Suspension or Certification Privileges Termination: When a Grievance procedure results in suspension or termination of certification privileges, the EVI Certification Advisory Board will keep the terms of the suspension/termination confidential, and will not call attention to the removal of the individual’s name and courses from the EVI website. It will be the individual’s responsibility to notify any students enrolled for upcoming courses that the courses have been cancelled and to refund any and all advance payments. Should an EVT Representative have his or her certification privileges revoked, he or she may continue to list their certification achievement as part of his or her curriculum vitae; however, all Estill-related logos, bugs, and links to www.EstillVoice.com must be removed from the individual’s website and/or promotional materials.

D. EVT Representative & Event Promotion

1. Use of “Estill” and “EVT”: The Estill logo and web bugs must be used in personal websites and in promotional materials so long as their use does not imply that the site or material has been generated or in any way

Page 47: Certification Manual Version 4 - Estill Voice Training...4 I. CERTIFICATION, AFFILIATION AND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES Certificate of Figure Proficiency 4. Requirements a. Complete both

41III. EVT REPRESENTATIVE POLICIES

specifically endorsed by EVI. However, EVT Representatives are not permitted to use the terms “Estill” or “EVT” in registering the name of a personal company or website unless they have a contractual agreement with Estill Voice International that authorizes use of these terms.

2. EVT Graphics: EVI will provide EVT graphics for use in course/workshop materials upon request and reserves the right to request copies of materials used in promotional presentations and in standardized and non-standardized EVT courses at any time. In most cases a graphics preparation fee will apply, in proportion to the scope of the graphics request. In addition, a nominal royalty fee will apply for permission attached to each use of EVT graphics. This fee will be adjusted relative to context of use: fees will be higher for use of EVT graphics in books and printed materials available for sale than for use of EVT graphics in professional scientific or pedagogical presentations. All fees will be discussed and agreed upon in advance.

3. Introductory Events: CMTs and CCIs producing introductory or promotional events are encouraged to notify EVI and post these events on the website. A posting fee may apply.

4. Refund Policy: When events, workshops, or courses are offered for a fee, cancellation and refund policies should be clearly stated. Guidelines for registration fees, advance deposits, etc. must appear on the registration form.

D. Course Approval

1. Overview: As the demand for Estill Voice Training increases, and as more courses are scheduled, EVI will use the following procedures to help avoid scheduling and market conflicts. CCIs should understand and abide by these guidelines.

2. Schedulinga. Approval Policy: EVI will approve, assign course numbers, and post courses on the EVI

web-site on a first-come, first-served basis.

b. Time Frame: CCIs should obtain EVI Course Approval at least 3 months in advance of course date/s, having already consulted www.EstillVoice.com and the EVI Course Director during the planning process to avoid date/s and content/topic conflicts.

3. Market Competition: EVI will not approve nor web-post a proposed course that directly competes with a previously posted course. Direct competition may result from proximity of time, proximity

Page 48: Certification Manual Version 4 - Estill Voice Training...4 I. CERTIFICATION, AFFILIATION AND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES Certificate of Figure Proficiency 4. Requirements a. Complete both

42 III. EVT REPRESENTATIVE POLICIES

of venue, and/or similarity of audience for the course/workshop’s topic/content.

4. Market Competition Resolution: Where potential for direct competition exists, the Course Director will consult both CCIs involved and decide outcomes on a case-by-case basis, according to guidelines that follow:

a. Posting by Mutual Agreement: If the EVI Course Director and both CCIs agree that the course will enroll without drawing participants away from the previously posted course, it will be approved, assigned a number, and web-posted.

b. Posting Compromise: If the new course has a self-contained source of enrollment but might draw participants away from the previously posted course were it to appear on the web-site, it may be approved and assigned a number but not listed on the web-site.

5. Website Posting Classification Guide: When posting information on www.EstillVoice.com, the following terms will be used (a web posting fee may apply):

a. Events: These include speaking engagements, research presentations, and receptions that are related to the Estill Voice Model or EVT and/or of special interest to members of the EVT community.

b. Workshops: These “introductory” workshops often integrate the Estill Figures and Qualities with a specific topic, i.e., Musical Theatre, Opera, Folk Singing. Previous attendance at an Estill Voice Training Course is not required.

c. Courses: The complete EVT Level One and/or Level Two curriculum as provided by EVI.

d. Advanced Workshops: Figures and Qualities taught in Level One and Two are extended and explored in complex applications of the Estill work. Attendance at a Level One and Level Two Course is a pre-requisite.

4. Descriptive Titlesa. Level One and Two Courses: All courses presenting substantial portions of the Level One

and Level Two Estill Voice Training curricula should be titled as such, and presented with EVI presentation slides and Workbooks. Each student must have his or her own copy of the Course Workbooks whether the course is being taught in the classroom or public setting. Advertising/announcements should clearly communicate whether the costs of workbooks are included in the course fee or charged separately.

b. Introduction to Level One and Two Courses: In cases where a course does not present every Figure and all the Qualities, the term “Introduction” will be applied.

c. Workshops: Challenges are presented by the offering of non-standardized EVT workshops or courses, where the CCI will not be using teaching materials and curricula from the Think Voice Series. Examples include advanced courses and one-day introductory workshops. Over the years, titles have fallen into the category of “common usage” although the content

Page 49: Certification Manual Version 4 - Estill Voice Training...4 I. CERTIFICATION, AFFILIATION AND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES Certificate of Figure Proficiency 4. Requirements a. Complete both

43III. EVT REPRESENTATIVE POLICIES

of specific workshop or course may vary significantly when presented by one CCI versus another. Each CCI is encouraged to develop titles and descriptions that highlight the unique character of the workshops/courses he/she is presenting.

d. Proprietary vs. Common Usage: When a CCI has a sense of personal “ownership” associated with the development of a given workshop or course, she or he is urged to communicate this to the EVI Course Director, and to partner with EVI in the development of standardized materials to be used with that particular workshop or course. Notify the EVI Course Director well in advance of public distribution of workshop/course promotional materials so that the distinction between “common usage” and “proprietary” titles can be preserved.

E. Course Administration Policies

1. General Guidelines The following paperwork is required for all EVI-approved courses. Samples of these documents/forms appear in Section VI of this manual and are available for download from the EVT Representative Extranet. Additional paperwork to facilitate course administration, such as a Course Production Checklist and Web-Posting Guide, can also be found in Section VI.

a. Course Attendance Form

CCIs are required to submit the name and contact information for each course participant. This allows EVI to track participants who might be interested in pursuing certification. EVI has developed an Excel Spreadsheet to facilitate this process.

b. Copyright, Trademark and Health Agreement

CCIs are expected to have course participants sign the Copyright, Trademark and Health Agreement at the onset of all EVT courses, and to indicate that the form has been signed on the Course Attendance Form. Copies of this signed form must be kept by the CCI for 5 years and submitted to EVI headquarters upon request.

c. EVI Course Evaluation Form

EVI monitors for the continuous quality improvement of its teachers and courses. In order to acquire information about the quality of courses and workshops, EVI has developed a Course Evaluation Form that must be completed by every participant attending an EVT Course. CCIs are permitted to make their own additions to the EVI Course Evaluation Form. An Evaluation Summary Report should be prepared at the close of each course. The EVI Course Evaluation Form originals and Evaluation Summary Report should be archived by the CCI. EVI performs occasional reviews of EVT Representatives and may request to see Course Evaluation Forms at any time.

d. Course Attendance Certificate

CCIs are required to provide each course participant with a Course Attendance Certificate. The Estill Voice Training Logo MUST appear on all Certificates of Attendance.

3. Preparation for Phase Two Observations a. Teaching Skills: The CMT-Candidate will be observed teaching each of the concepts,

Figures and Qualities from EVT Level One (Figures for Voice Control) and Level Two (Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities) courses. In order to prepare for this, the following suggestions are offered:

• Practice demonstration of the Figures and Qualities to assure that models are adequate

• Study the Course Instructor’s Manual (suggested)• Observe other Interns during practice sessions• Practice for group and individual Figure coaching with others preparing

for certification• Pre-plan for questions that might be asked during the observation

session • Pre-plan for possible problems that might arise with regard to individual

practice (e.g. isolation of structures, constriction) and possible solutions to these problems

b. Integration of Estill Voiceprint Plus: The CMT-Candidate will be observed integrating Estill Voiceprint Plus into his or her teaching. The CMT-C should be prepared to answer student questions about the Estill Voiceprint Plus displays. These questions will likely be both general in terms of components of the display and specific in terms of specific visual cues associated with practice of structural changes within each Compulsory Figure. The following list is a general guide:

• Smooth versus a choppy Siren• Visible distinctions between Onsets/Offsets • Effects of FVF Constriction/Retraction• Conditions which introduce/reduce interharmonic noise• Formant changes with Larynx, Lip, Tongue and Jaw Control• High frequency resonance changes with Velum and Aryepiglottic

C. Certified Course Instructor

1. Phase One Examinationsa. General Remarks: EVI expects that individuals applying to become a CCI will have a degree

in either speech or music or equivalent personal studies in the following areas: anatomy and physiology, speech and hearing science, voice disorders, music theory, vocal pedagogy, music notation and music terminology, and aural skills. The CCI exam includes questions from the fields of speech and music as well as Jo Estill’s presentations and publications. Certified Course Instructors should be able to field complex questions regarding acoustics, speech science, anatomy and physiology, and vocal health and voice disorders; therefore, the CCI written and oral examinations include advanced anatomy and physiology of the laryngeal, respiratory and pharyngeal mechanism, complex acoustics including advanced spectrogram and power spectrum interpretation, basic speech science concepts, and development and research underlying Estill Voice Training. A list of suggested references is provided at the end of this section, and candidates will be given an opportunity to purchase articles and presentations by Jo Estill when they register their intent to pursue certification at this level. Applicants should also be prepared to write and speak clearly regarding the Estill Voice Model and its relationship to other pedagogical approaches and specific applications when singing or speaking in different styles.

b. Anatomy & Physiology: Examinees should prepare to identify and discuss the following terms and concepts that may arise during presentation of an EVT course to the public.

REGISTRATION AGREEMENT

Estill Voice International (“EVI”) is providing you with an opportunity to learn and use Estill Voice TrainingTM

(EVT) including the Figures for VoiceTM. We are confident that you will find EVT useful in your speaking andsinging. When you register for an EVT course or workshop, you agree to follow the principles outlined below, designed to protect the integrity of your voice as well as this extraordinary work.

Regarding Vocal Health:The exercises presented in this course are deemed safe for the voice when done correctly and with supervision. Taking an exercise out of its context within the whole of Estill Voice TrainingTM could place your voice at risk. It is EVI's mission to promote vocal health; however, we make no claims nor guarantees. You are solely responsiblefor the health of your voice. Consistent with starting any physical training program, you should: 1) Seek the advice of a doctor such as a Laryngologist (an Ear-Nose-Throat doctor who specializes in the voice)

prior to participating in this - or any - program of vocal study if you have any concerns about your vocal health 2) Notify your instructor if you have ever been diagnosed with a voice disorder or if you suspect that you might

have one now. (Your confidentiality will be protected.)3) Invest the time required to learn how to perform each exercise correctly and at "most comfortable vocal effort"

under the supervision of a EVI Certified Master Teacher or Course Instructor.

Regarding Copyrights:1) All EVT materials, books, papers, pamphlets, video and audio media and their contents, logos, and visuals are

copyrighted and proprietary and cannot be reproduced in any form without the express written consent of Estill Voice International. Please visit www.EstillVoice.com/Store for teaching materials available to the public.

2) Use of Estill Voice Training logos as part of your professional marketing absent official EVI certification is prohibited. You may list the EVT courses and workshops you have completed in a curriculum vitae as evidence of professional development. A "Certificate of Attendance" does not qualify you as an EVT teacher or practitioner.

Regarding Recordings:Should your Course Instructor grant you permission to record any portion of the course (audio or video), your signature below indicates your agreement that these recordings are for your personal use only and that they will not be played, uploaded to web-based media, nor transcribed for anyone else.
