A certificate and 15 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are awarded to participants upon completion of the program. COURSE OBJECTIVES At the end of this course, students will be able to:

COURSE TOPICS The course will cover the following topics:

1. HRM activities and the history of HRM 2. HR career development; professional resources and certification 3. Strategic HRM 4. Individual performance and retention 5. HR metrics and benchmarking 6. The impact of technology; outsourcing 7. Health and safety 8. Global HRM 9. Trends and developments

COURSE FORMAT This is a lecture – discussion course in which topics are presented by the instructor and group discussions and activities are completed by students during class and outside of class. Reading assignments will be reviewed at the end of each class. You are expected to read the textbook assignments as indicated, and be ready to discuss the material in class. This course will include a variety of mediums for learning to include guest speakers, use of training videos, small group discussions, and a group project that includes group presentations.

TEXT(S) AND REQUIRED SUPPLIES Required text: Human Resource Management Robert L. Mathis, John H. Jackson. Fourteenth edition. South-Western Publishing (this text is also used in the Employee Relations course). Supplies: You are responsible for your own notebook binder for class handouts.

EVALUATION AND GRADING Participants are evaluated in each course and, at the end of each course, are notified of successful or unsuccessful completion. Participants need to successfully complete each course in the previous term before they advance to the next term. The certificate is awarded upon completion of the nine-month course of study. Coursework for the Employee Relations course will be weighted as follows: Grading is SC/USC (successful completion/unsuccessful completion). SC is a minimum of 75% or higher. 80% attendance is required.

1. Reports 20% Each student will be given the article, Why We Hate HR and a chapter from HR From the Heart. The class will discuss the pros and cons of HR and explore the role of the HR professional from an organizational perspective and a personal perspective (describing why the interest to choose the HR profession). Report due week 5.

2. Short Essay 20% Each student will interview at least three internal customers from his or her organization/company and complete a one page report detailing how the customers believe HR contributes to or detracts from their success. Essay is due week 8.

3. Class Participation 30% Participants are expected to contribute in class discussions.

4. Attendance 30% Participants are expected to arrive on time and attend the full class session.
