I have always loved this beautiful description of smell by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It perfectly epitomises the impact that essential oils can have.

Scent is like music to the sense of smell; it evokes emotions, memories and our imagination. However, in our sanitised modern world scent has also become the forgotten sense. In

a survey where people were asked to rank the importance of our five senses only four percent of respondents felt that the sense of smell was the most important.

We are often lost for words when trying to describe scent. It may conjure up long lost emotions or memories from our past. For example, when I inhale the rich luscious earthy aroma of vetiver I am immediately transported to my childhood growing up on a farm and playing in the dirt.

Essential oils are nature’s aromatic gift to us. I encourage you to allow their heavenly scents to touch your heart and open the door to your soul. Like music, we should allow the scent of essential oils to seduce us as they waken our long lost memories and arouse our imagination.

I encourage you to practise koh-do, the Japanese art of listening to scent. This means allowing the scent to unfold as we experience it in a state of mindfulness and dreaming imagination.

Which brings me back to Japan; to celebrate our ninth anniversary in Japan I have created a Kyoto essential oil blend. We will also launch the blend with a beautiful Japanese incense made in Japan using our Kyoto blend and Australian sandalwood powder. (see page 5 for more information)

The Kyoto blend is simply magical; upon inhaling it we are immediately transported into a mystical and spiritual place

which connects us to nature and the spiritual traditions of Japan. I love Kyoto and in my heart it is the most spiritual of all the major cities in Japan.

Every time I use sandalwood oil I think back to a blending workshop that I attended in England in 1994. I was trying to dispense a few drops of sandalwood oil from a bottle with a dripulator. Sandalwood oil is a very viscous liquid and it resisted leaving the bottle. The lecturer noticed how this was testing my patience and gently reminded me to enjoy the moment as dispensing sandalwood oil is such a wonderful meditative experience.I always refer to essential oils as nature’s gift to humankind. I consider sandalwood oil one of the most sacred and precious gifts from nature! Most essential oil crops can be harvested year after year without having to destroy the plant. Therefore, you can consider them sustainable crops. However, it saddens me to think that we have to physically uproot and destroy the sandalwood tree in order to obtain the wood to produce the essential oil. Even more concerning is the fact that the tree needs to be 25 years old or more. You see, the best oil is found in the heartwood and roots of the tree and the heartwood does not start to develop until the tree is about 15 years old.

If you use sandalwood oil, it is imperative that you source it from sustainable suppliers and please use it thoughtfully. All around the world there

are strict laws in place to ensure that sandalwood remains sustainable. In this monograph I will talk extensively about the strategies that have been taken to ensure our grandchildren will also enjoy nature’s most precious gift to humanity.Botany and OriginsThe Santalum species belongs to the Santalaceae family. There are about 25 species spread throughout India, Malaysia, Australia and the Pacific Islands.

All sandalwoods are classified as root parasites. I once upset a botanist by calling sandalwood a vampire tree. In order to survive, the roots of the sandalwood tree must attach themselves to the roots of other trees to obtain their nutrients. However, a sandalwood tree will not kill its host tree.East Indian SandalwoodThe most important commercial species is S.album from India. It is referred to as East Indian sandalwood. S.album is a medium-sized tree (12-15m) that reaches maturity at 40-50 years old. The branches, bark and sapwood are odourless and as mentioned previously, the essential oil is found in the heartwood and roots. It is native to and cultivated in, the tropical regions of Asia such as India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia and Northern Australia.

Excessive harvesting without a strategy for replanting has substantially reduced the availability of sandalwood in India. This has resulted in global shortages and soaring market prices.Unfortunately, illegal poaching and spike disease have further contributed to the demise of sandalwood trees in India. As a result, in 2012, it was listed on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of threatened species in India. The monopolistic control of sandalwood trees by the Indian government has not deterred the illegal and indiscriminate harvesting of sandalwood, nor has it helped to conserve the species in its natural habitat. Paradoxically, the restrictive policies of the Indian government has discouraged legitimate interest in growing sandalwood trees. Under the existing rules, the landholder is responsible for the preservation of the sandalwood trees, which remain the exclusive property of the government, however very little incentive is provided to the landowner to protect the sandalwood trees. Australian SandalwoodsAustralia is home to several native species of Sandalwood. The two Australian native species of commercial interest are S.spicatum and S.lanceolatum. I love the sweet earthy aroma of

patchouli oil. While I am not a big

fan of the oil on its own, I always

find room for patchouli oil in my

blends. It is the most heavenly

base note!

Being such a “yang” energy person

I find patchouli too grounding -

drawing all my energy down to the

earth.

Valerie Ann Worwood best

describes patchouli;

“Patchouli reminds us that sitting

quietly under a tree is good if there

is a purpose in it – the purpose

of knowing and appreciating.

Sitting under a tree represents the

contemplation of what we can do for

ourselves and others in the way of

caring.”

Perhaps Valerie is correct - I need

more quiet time and sitting under

a tree. It is the perfect way to

balance and reconnect ourselves

and nature.

Method of extraction

Weiss says that fresh patchouli

leaves should not be used for

distillation of patchouli oil as the

distillation process does not

rupture the cells within the leaf. The

leaf is dried or lightly fermented

allowing the leaf cell structure to

become more permeable, liberating

the oil. However it has also been

noted that fermentation does not

improve the yield of the oil but may

contribute to an unpleasant aroma

in the oil.

Traditionally patchouli oil is distilled

in stills made of iron. It is known

that as the iron oxidises it will leach

into the oil, contributing to the

slightly darker colour. Research

has shown that this should not

adversely affect the quality of the

oil. However the perfume industry

considers the colouring undesirable

and redistills the oil to remove the

iron content.

Country of origin

Patchouli is a native of the tropic

regions of Asia and is now cultivated

in Indonesia, India, Malaysia, China

and Vietnam. Perfect Potion’s

certified organic patchouli oil is

sourced from Sri Lanka.

Characteristics

Patchouli oil is usually a viscous,

dark or orange brown liquid with a

distinctive rich, sweet-herbaceous,

spicy and earthy aroma.

Traditional uses

In TCM and Kanpo medicine

the herb is used to treat colds,

headaches, nausea, vomiting,

diarrhoea, abdominal pain and

halitosis. The patchouli herb is

referred to as Huo Xiang. It is used

to harmonise the middle burner

(digestion) and releases the exterior –

wind-damp-cold and summer heat.

Other uses

Dried patchouli leaves were

traditionally used to ward off moths

from carpets and fine woven goods

such as shawls and jackets. This is

a practice which dates back to the

Victorian period.

While the oil is extensively used in

perfumery, its unique flavour and

odour means that patchouli oil is

often used to flavour foods and

beverages. I recall challenging the

Japanese Health Ministry in 2008

when they had just passed a new

regulation banning patchouli oil in

cosmetics. Certainly I would have

understood the need to do this if

patchouli presented any toxicology

problems. I argued that patchouli

oil is one of the safest essential oils

in aromatherapy and I also pointed

Rose absolute

the intense beauty and impact of rose.

Rose oil is one of the most exquisite

essential oils in the world!

Botany

There are more than 3,200 species

with the genus Rosa. However the

most important commercial essential

oil producers are rosa centifolia, rosa

damascena and rosa gallica. Other

species may be grown to produce an

oil or rose extract.

Method of extraction

The term “absolute” refers to rose oil

that has been solvent extracted, where

hexane is generally the solvent. The

extraction process draws out all the

aromatic compounds as well as other

substances such as pigments and

waxes. The solvent is then removed

by vacuum distillation. The remaining

product, which is often a waxy

mass, is referred to as a concrete.

The concrete is then mixed with

ethanol, which dissolves the aromatic

constituents, leaving the waxy

component behind. The alcohol is

then low-pressure evaporated, leaving

behind the finished absolute.

The benefit of solvent extraction is

the low temperature at which the

extraction takes place and it removes

all the aromatic compounds found in

the flower.

Rose absolute vs rose otto

Many aromatherapy authors clearly

explain that rose oil is available as an

absolute or as a steam distilled oil,

referred to as an ‘otto’. However these

same authors, myself included, often

do not clearly differentiate between the

properties of the absolute and the otto.

The reader is often left to assume that

the two have similar properties.

While the absolute and otto do indeed

share similar qualities, their chemistry

is quite different and as such, there

are some notable differences in the

aromatherapy uses of rose absolute

and rose otto. Some aromatherapists

argue that the absolute is devitalised,

has no life force and is therefore a

“dead chemical substance”. However

we can also argue that the distillation

process involves a much higher

temperature, which is more likely to

damage the life force of the plant.

Others are concerned about solvent

residue in the oil. In the past it was well

known that toxic solvents were used,

however these solvents have now

been banned. Many solvent extracted

oils are now used in food flavouring as

there are strict regulations controlling

the type of solvents used.

Wabner, a world leading authority

on rose oils, says rose absolute is a

superior oil to rose otto. He points out

that rose otto contains constituents

such as rose oxide and damascenone

that are not naturally found in the rose.

These components are a by-product

of the high temperature distillation

process. Schnaubelt also explains

that absolutes are far more complex,

hence the difference in the aroma

between an absolute and otto is quite

dramatic. Traditionally absolutes have

been used for expensive perfumery

purposes. Rose absolute is also far

more tenacious than rose otto.

This monograph refers to the rose

absolute oil. In a future essential oil

monograph we will discuss rose otto.

Country of origin

Rose is adaptable to a wide range

of environments, however for oil

production, the most important rose

growing areas are Bulgaria, Morocco

and Turkey. Temperature and humidity

are the most important factors that

influence flowering. A long spring

season with a mean temperature of

5-15 ̊C is critical for a high flower yield

with a high oil content.

Rose absolute is an orange-yellow to

orange-brown viscous liquid with a

rich, warm, sweet, spicy-floral and very

deep rosy aroma.

guide to using essential oilssteam inhalation Add 5 drops of essential oil to a bowl of steaming water. Then, place a towel over your head and the bowl and inhale the vapours for a few minutes. The eyes should be kept shut during inhalation. Steam inhalations are a traditional home remedy to ease congestion in the respiratory passages caused by colds, coughs, catarrh and sinusitis.

diffusion Create the perfect ambience in your home, bedroom or workplace by diffusing your favourite essential oil or blend of oils in a diffuser. To use a candle diffuser place a small quantity of water in the small dish on top of the oil burner, then add 5-10 drops of essential oil. Light the candle and keep alight for approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Remember, never keep a burning object unattended or allow the oil and water in the oil burner to dry out. When using an ultrasonic diffuser please follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Never overfill the diffuser with water as this may prevent it from working. All ultrasonic diffusers should have a maximum water level mark.

massage Use a 2.5% dilution of the appropriate essential oil to the chosen carrier oil such as cold pressed sweet almond or apricot kernel oil. This is equal to approximately 5 drops to every 10mL of carrier oil.

bath For a full body experience in a tub, use up to 5 drops of the appropriate essential oil added to a teaspoon of vegetable oil and add to a warm tub of water. Foot or hand baths may be prepared by adding 2-3 drops of essential oil to a bowl of warm water.

compress Compresses are very useful for the temporary relief of skin problems, bruises, muscular aches and period pain. Use 5 drops of essential oil in 200mL of hot or cold water depending on the condition. Place a cloth in the water and then wring out and lay over the affected area. Leave for up to 15 minutes.

direct inhalation Add 3-4 drops of essential oil to a handkerchief, hold this near the nose for a few moments and inhale the vapours.

‘Kakehashi’The recipe for Connection Pulse Point was discovered in the diary of one of our Japanese customers, Mihoko. While studying to become a nurse, Mihoko was struggling with breast cancer and sadly passed away.
