Re-Charter

On April 26th of 2014, the members of University of Wisconsin-Platteville CERES re-chartered! They had worked for this achievement over the last four years and are extremely excited to be recognized lo-cally and internationally again.

25th Anniversary

Something else that was exciting this past year was the 25th Anniversary of the UW-Platteville Farmhouse and CERES Chapter Celebration. It was hosted the same day as the re-chartering. There were a lot of alumni members that came to help celebrate this wonderful occasion. There were auctions, food, speakers and a dance floor to help the alumni members bring back some old memories.

Sister Bonding

These lovely ladies also have been doing a lot of sister bonding

this past year and a half. One of the fun activities that members

have explored is hiking on the Mines of Spain Trails, in Dubuque!

The weather was perfect for a day of hiking and they had a blast

while getting to know their sisters better.

UK Association Revitalizes Sisterhood

Page 2 ROSE AND SCROLL

Creating a "lifelong sisterhood for women with an appreciation of agriculture" is a part of what Ceres was founded on. With many great relationships built while we attended the Uni-versity of Kentucky, it is important that we stay connected to our sisters as we mature and grow in our personal and professional lives.

We, at the University of Kentucky Alumnae Association, are striving to connect with our sisters on regularly and maintain those relationships we built in college through various activities, including sisterhoods, monthly dinners, community service, and regular communication via Facebook, our Ceres Listserv, and Twitter.

This year brings great excitement for the UK Ceres Alumnae Association, as we bring in a new board of directors, and begin to invigorate our asso-ciation. Here's what we are doing to re-energize our association: We are planning many events for the next two years, and we wanted to highlight some of the key events for this year. With the University of Kentucky being in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), football is a way of life. Now, Ken-tucky is no big winner, but tailgates bring us together around good food, great friends, and team spirit. We are also planning on hosting a Holiday Market to both fund raise for the University of Kentucky Ceres Chapter, the Alumnae Association, and a local food pantry. Finally, we are busy reconnecting with our sisters through monthly dinners, regional get-togethers, and planning our Spring Founder's Day with the assistance of our Chapter.

We would love to hear how other Associations maintain a strong organiza-tion and engage members when so many are spread out!

Sometimes joining Ceres feels like a couple of years ago and other times it feels like a lifetime. Ceres is now 30 years old! Oh my we can't possibly be that old yet, can we? In those 30 years we have added hundreds if not thousands of members. We many not have realized it at the time but pledging Ceres was a pledge for a lifetime. Ceres International would like to honor that pledge by staying in touch with all of you. To do that we need to have your contact information. It is tough for International and Associations to know if we have your most updated info. If you or know of a Ceres Sister that has moved, gotten married, or changed email addresses in the last 5 years we would like your updated information. Please go to http://www.ceresfraternity.org/alumnae-updates and submit your information and pass on the link to anyone you think needs it. Keep in mind that maiden names and chapter affiliation are helpful when entering the information into the database.

Oh the Places We Will Go!

Alberta Chapter Happenings

When I joined Ceres three years ago, my pledge class more than doubled the number of active members yet our total chapter number was a measly 11 members. Since then, our numbers have grown to 16 actives, with at least six seriously interested pledges. That being said, come November, our numbers should enter the 20's, at least! Definitely one of our 'unforgettable moments' for the actives who struggled to maintain the Al-berta chapter in the past would have to be the moment at initiations last year, when the person who was taking the picture for us had to back up several steps and then tell us all to 'squish together' so that we could all fit in the camera lens. We were more than happy to oblige, and I know all of us can't wait to hear those magical words again this November, when we initiate more young women. This is a definite possibility; when I was sending out the welcome e-mail to those who were potentially interested in Ceres, I had to type in 23 e-mail addresses! I'm pleased and proud to say, the Alberta chapter of Ceres is holding strong.

Our major fundraising event is called Women in Agriculture, and last year we had nearly 100 people in atten-dance and managed to raise $4000. This was split in half, and we donated $2000 to the Northwestern Ronald McDonald House Charities, a nice increase from the $1500 we donated last year. Hopefully that number in-creases this year! As well, we were offered an exciting opportunity. A women named Tina Notenbomer had retired from the Alberta Hatching Egg Producers as the chairperson, and her son was looking to start a scholar-ship in her name, in support of young women in the agriculture industry. As this is such a strong attribute of Ceres, they offered to partner with our chapter for future years as a permanent scholarship! We were incredibly excited, and more than willing to make the partnership. The details are still being worked out this year, but it is certainly a very positive outlook for the future!

Lastly, as I mentioned before, our chapter has grown substantially over the past couple of years, and now we are able to actively participate in the Greek community at the University of Alberta. Last year we won the awards for both the Highest GPA as well as the Most Improved Fraternity. We were so proud to have achieved those awards - now we just have to try and best ourselves, yet again! Our bond with FarmHouse has been strengthening, as well as our bonds with other Greek fraternities on the campus. I'm excited to continue our

networking and see what the future has in store. Although we have been growing, there are still many ways we can expand and continue our growth, and I can't wait to explore all these new avenues. With how the past couple of years have been playing out for us, our chapter has plenty of hope that we will continue strong and proud, and will keep going up and up! I hope everyone else is having the good fortune we have been, and hopefully a few of us will be able to make it to Conclave in the future - maybe get a chance to escape the incessant snow up here, eh?

This past year has brought many great changes and accomplishments to the South Dakota State University chapter. We more than doubled the size of our chapter, going from 8 active members in spring 2013 to 20 active members in Spring 2014. We also had several successful fundraisers and were able to raise over $2200 for Relay for life, with $800 of the

donation coming from our First Annual Date Auction.

April 15, 1989 was an important day for many at UW-Platteville Ceres and Farm-

house Chapters. It marked the beginning of a 25 year journey of growth and devel-

opment of the organizations. Along this journey, they chose to mark the milestones

with a reunion celebration on the 5 year anniversaries.

Starting with the 10th year, Ceres and Farmhouse chapters and associations

gather for an evening of fun and entertainment. This gathering gives the alumni

and actives a chance to mingle and learn about traditions and stories from the

“early days”. Many alumni look forward to this gathering every 5 years because it

offers them an opportunity to connect with old friends and get an update on chap-

ter involvements.

Alumnae Lynette Dornink (UWP ’89) tells us her favorite part is “Seeing college

friends at the banquets allows us to fall back into the great connections we had. Time stops and we're 20 and at

UWP again having the times of our lives!”

“My freshman year was the 10 year and it was such an awesome experience to meet all these Alumnae who had

helped start the group and had such great stories and traditions that we could carry on to those that followed us”

was what Jenny Wackershauser (UWP ’02) remembers about her years attending the anniversary banquets.

Along with a meal and dancing, UW-Platteville Ceres takes the opportunity to fundraise to help contribute to

scholarship and general funds. A silent and live auction are held to raise funds as well as a donation drive to

support chapter travels to Conclave and the Encounter. Planning for the event starts several years earlier and is

a combined committee with the Chapters and Associations for Ceres and Farmhouse where members of both

organizations take on responsibilities to make the event successful.

Jennifer Johnson (UWP ’89) remarks that it’s “Nice seeing sisters that I haven't talked to or have not seen in a

while… also great to go and be able to jet back to past times when life seemed more simple and fun..basically an

escape from reality for a day.”

Katie Reichling shared Master of Ceremony duties and entertained everyone with quotes and memories from the

members as well as some “minute to win it” competitions on stage. She likes the opportunity “To catch up with

old friends and hear tales of yesteryear!”

New Board Members

Hello Ladies!

My name is Angela (Lammers) Peters and I am originally from Cumberland, Wiscon-sin. My family and I live in Joplin, Missouri. We moved here in 2011 only four months before the devastating tornado that took 161 lives tore through this town. We were very lucky that day. I believe it is one of the reasons that I decided to go back to college and finish what I started at the University of Wisconsin- Platteville in1989. I am currently a junior at Missouri Southern State University majoring in History (BA) and minoring in both American Studies and Geography.

Growing up, I lived on a hobby farm and loved having animals around all of the time. At one time or another, we had beef cattle, chickens, pigs, horses, and lots of dogs and cats. My favorite thing to do on our farm was to “play pioneer.” I loved to read Willa Cather’s and Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books and I would pretend that I was a homesteader on the Oregon Trail. My love of history stuck with me and my major

when I went to college in 1989 was History-Secondary Education. At UWP, I met and became friends with the girls in my dorm and one of them was a CERES pledge. So, I tagged around with her and found out that the CE-RES Women had something that I wanted: Sisterhood. So, I pledged in the fall of 1990 and became one of them!

In 1992, I left UWP and had a baby girl. My baby, Allyson, is now 22 years old and she attends MSSU as well. In 2002, I was married to Doug Peters and had a son, Raphael (Ray-fell) aka Rafe, and he keeps me busy when I am not studying. I am currently not working outside the home while I am in school. Throughout the 90’s and early 00’s I worked in healthcare. I then opened my own business for a few years and stayed in retail until 2011.

This fall semester is very busy for me; I hope to get re-connected and familiar with CERES and the chapters. In the spring semester, I will have a less stressful schedule and I hope to be able to attend some functions. Have a great year!

Hello to all my CERES sisters. I am from small town Alberta and grew up on a acreage filled with lots of ani-mals and projects. Currently, I am a teacher and try to do as many different ac-tivities in my spare time as possible. I joined CERES in 2004 when we started to get the ball rolling to colonize the Alberta chapter again. I was the founding president of the new chapter and have held various positions prior to that. I am excited to be one of the newest members of the International Board and I hope to help CERES International grow in a multitude of ways. I look forward to meeting you all sometime down the road. Warm fall greetings Ceres sisters! As your new International Board President I wanted to take a quick second to introduce myself. I grew up on a small dairy farm in southwest Wisconsin with my parents and four younger sis-ters. My love of dairy cows sent me to UW-Platteville where I double majored in Animal Science and Ag Business and fell in love with the Ceres sisterhood. For the last 9 years I have worked for ABS Global in the Genetic Services department which has allowed me to travel a bit globally and further my passion for agriculture. I am excited to be your board president as it will allow me to continue to work with enthusiastic women who have an appreciation for agriculture while growing and developing Ceres as a whole.

Conclave wrapped up two quick months ago and Facebook tells that all chapters are in full gear with recruitment, socials, philanthropy and of course studying. During all of this business, I want to remind you all to be sure to check in with your International Consultants on a regular basis. Consultants are kind of like a guardian angel (guardian goddess?) that can help you out with all things Ceres. The only issue is that we can’t help you if you don’t communicate with us.

To ensure that your Consultants are adequately meeting your chapters’ needs, we ask that you:

1. Send consultants your weekly meeting minutes 2. Respond to emails they send to the chapter 3. Contact when questions arise with processes and procedures etc 4. Request help with ideas for philanthropy, fundraising etc

Trina is also a valuable resource for questions, and we ask that you contact her for issues with Term Reports and Dues. Outside of those areas, we prefer you contact your consultant as Trina is busy keeping the International books in order and keeping Interest Groups and Colonies on the path to Chartering.

In the end, all members of the International Board and the Executive Director want to see our chapters succeed. There is no such thing as over communication- so please keep us in the loop of what is going on in your world! Be-low is a list of all the Chapters and their consultants and the opposite page has our contact information.

I want to wish you all best wishes for the remainder of the year. I hope to meet many of you at the Ceres Encounter coming up in 2015!

Love in Ceres,

Emily Novinskie
