“Small Works” is a District’s student exhibition hosted by Miami International University of Art & Design. The exhibit allows students to explore various genre, styles and movements through an impressive array of techniques, as well as subject matter. The students, through the study of various artists, are challenged to maintain the integrity of the size constraints limiting the artwork to no larger than 9 x 9 x 9 inches. Artworks will include both 2-D and 3-D creations and this show still proves to be both inspiring and exciting in its size limitations and open-ended themes.

Bio-Artists also known as molecular artists, such as David Goodsell, Guy Ben-Ary, Andre Brodyk, and the husband and wife bio-artist team of Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr as well as others, are using bacteria cells, viral cells and DNA cells as a springboard for their creative visual representations. These artists foster their sense of how cells are organized, crowd, and visualize the way proteins glob together to perform functions resulting in life itself. The manifestations of these ground breaking ideas of science meeting the visual arts challenges our scientific and visual literacy and invites us to explore organisms as things that move and live. In this STEAM inspired exhibition, art truly does imitate life. Resources Intractions on Multispecies Guy Benary Cell Formation The Tissue Culture Art Project

This thematic exhibition allows students to examine Miami’s tropical splendor while viewing it like a true native, as they observe their own relationship to rich environments of nature through animals in their habitats. Students will explore this concept through the use of various media such as, but not limited to: drawing, painting, printmaking, etc. Miami’s natural waterways, mangroves, native trees, small islands and everglades are but a few of those tropical wonders where the nearly 500 native species as well as dozens of established exotic animals make their home. Alligators, otters, opossums, manatees, fox squirrels, raccoons, white-tailed deer, key deer and armadillos are among the more commonly seen mammals, but not the least of the hundreds of species in South Florida to be explored and considered in this STEAM related exhibition.

While the history of photography has its roots in the camera obsura, the idea of capturing an image in permanent form has evolved from traditional photography to encompass the present day digital imagery and manipulation as well as photograms, the incorporation of photographic imagery in other visual arts forms. Artists such as Cindy Sherman, Man Ray, Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, and Dorothea Lange have all used the photographic medium as a way to capture their stories through portraits, landscapes, nature, fashion, and photograms. This exhibition explores the use of photographic materials to create visual artworks that portray what the eye can behold.
