Mission

The 37th CERAWeek by IHS Markit focused on “Tipping Point: Strategies for a New Energy Future.” Over 4,200 delegates from more than 75 countries participated in this year’s gathering. Over 350 sessions addressed the opportunities and transitions ahead—from oil and gas production to power generation, renewable energy, technology, investment, and regulatory and environmental policies.

Over 650 speakers—senior executives and officials, thought leaders, NGOs, and IHS Markit experts from across the energy spectrum and from the policy, financial, technology, and industrial communities— offered insight on the nature and pace of change and identified forces that will be critical to shaping the future business environment and assuring the world’s growing energy requirements.

The second annual Innovation Agora @ CERAWeek included many new features and a remarkable assembly of innovators and thought leaders. The Agora was an open marketplace for ideas, dialogue, and new experiences and connections. We featured examples of the new world of innovation and how the “great wave” of new technology—from blockchain to e-mobility, robotics, additive manufacturing, connectivity, cloud, and digital technology—is transforming the energy future.

CERAWeek session highlights are available online at CERAWeek’s Digital Hub (live.ceraweek.com).

We are deeply thankful to our speakers, partners, and participants for their engagement and contributions to CERAWeek.

Sincerely,

Daniel Yergin

Natural Gas & Global Energy Plenaries

Opening Address Hon. Rick Perry, US Secretary of Energy, spoke about the Trump Administration’s “new energy realism” of embracing technology and innovation over regulations to improve exploration, yields, safety, the environment, and emission reductions while transcending limitations and “pointing the way to global energy security and shared prosperity.” Secretary Perry also shared the administration’s vision for enhancing US energy security and revitalizing the Appalachian region by replicating Port Houston’s petrochemical ability in proximity to the Marcellus and Utica Basins.

Global Energy DialogueBen van Beurden, CEO, Royal Dutch Shell, discussed Shell’s 2070 zero carbon emission target and how the company plans to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2035 and by 50% by 2050 by selling lower- emission products to customers, reducing its carbon footprint, and adding natural gas into its energy mix. Shell will continue to make oil and gas investments as part of its core business.

I don’t think there is an energy conference anywhere else in the world that has more attendance and has more of an impact for the industry than CERAWeek.

One lesson from Leonardo [da Vinci], and from Steve Jobs, and Ben Franklin—all of whom were technologists—is, it’s not simply about the engineering; it’s about connecting humanities to the engineering so that [you] do something that actually connects to people [and that] fulfills a deep human need.

Members of the Future Energy Leaders program formed a unique community and engaged in learning, dialogue, and networking opportunities at the conference. The Future Energy Leaders program cultivated exceptional individuals from companies, policy & academic institutions, and NGOs to help empower them to meet current and future energy challenges. The program offered opportunities to interact with peers and to partake in thought leadership discussions led by prominent executives and officials.

Participants joined Future Energy Leader meetings and receptions and enjoyed use of the private Future Energy Leaders networking lounge. Participants were nominated by supporting CERAWeek Partners committed to developing the next generation of leadership.

Future Energy Leaders hailed from ABB, ADNOC, Aramco, BHP, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Dow Chemical, EEI, Emerson, Equinor, ExxonMobil, JOGMEC, MIT, PEMEX, PETRONAS, Schneider Electric, Shell, Siemens, and TOTAL.

In one week as a Future Energy Leader, I networked with the world’s top energy CEOs and held my own discussing politically ‘hot’ topics. I acted as an Emerson ambassador on the world’s largest energy stage and, ultimately, gained invaluable perspective on what energy leadership means on a personal, professional, and global level.

The Professional Development Program (PDP) provided intensive case-study leadership training. The program was available to eligible candidates from CERAWeek partners, offering unique learning and a global community of peers. Held the weekend prior to CERAWeek, this two-day course was taught by Harvard Business School Professor Forest Reinhardt. The program consisted of seven sessions:

• Fundamental Economics & Politics of Energy• Strategy & Energy• Energy from the Producer’s Perspective: Norway• Energy from the Perspective of a Consumer: China• Energy in the United States• Market Mechanisms & Environmental Externalities• Energy in the Global Future

Not only have I made lifelong friends, but PDP re-instilled my love of learning and influencing positive change in the world. Because of CERA PDP, I am re-motivated in my career.
