General

Founder-member of the Centre of Mining Environment/Department of Environmental Science & Engg, established the Centre with development/ set-up of laboratories in record time of about 11/2 years. The Centre has been developed as State-of-Art facility in Mining Environment under the scheme of "Centres of Excellence" of MOEF/ GOI. The Centre is considered one of the best facilities in environmental teaching, research, consultancy and HRD.

Developed and started the B.Tech (Environmental Engineering) and the M.Tech(Environmental Science and Engineering) at ISM.

Developed "Standardised" Training Modules from 1, 2, 6, & 13 weeks duration on various Mining Environmental aspects and organised about 60 training programmes with training of about 700 executives of Junior - middle - senior levels.

Training Modules developed under Environmental & Social Mitigation World Bank Project of CIL with training of 214 executives over 21 training programmes, have been appreciated by the World Bank and CIL.

The World Bank & CIL selected us as Sole Source to enhance the Environmental Management Capacity of CIL. Under this project Eight (08) Manuals have been developed Four (04) Training Modules developed and Imparted Training to 105 Executives to Enhance the Environmental Capacity of CIL.

Three (03) types of Training Modules developed under Environmental Management Capacity Building Technical Assistance (EMCBTA) Project: Mining sub-component of MOEF/GOI under Activity II B, Three types of Training imparted to ~ 160 Executives over Eight (08) Training Programmes and also 40 Executives have been imparted International Training/Study Tour of BMPs in Australia during June 14-25, 2004.

Associated in the development of the Guidelines for use of Dust Suppressant Chemicals in Coal Mining Areas.

Associated in the development of Environmental Standards for Coal Mining Areas Associated in the development of Environmental Methodologies (Sampling and analysis techniques) for

air and water/effluents for Bureau of Indian Standards. Associated in the formulation of Master Plan for Operation Clean of Damodar River for MADA under

Phase - II of Ganga Action Plan. An amount of Rs. 64.00 crore was sanctioned for the purpose to Govt. of Bihar.

Associated in the Environmental and Engineering characterization of coal combustion Residues with its subsequent utilization (as mine back-fill material, AMD abatement subsidence control etc.) in three major demonstration projects in abandoned mined out areas in mid-west mining region of U.S.A. Continued and developing the same research programme in India. Environmental characterisation including leaching studies, through open-column percolation experiments established fly ash, bottom ash etc. as environmentally benign materials. This led to their utilization in mine reclamation, agriculture development etc. at demonstration projects in TISCO (Jamadoba & Ghatotand coal mining complexes). The Centre is continuing this program in a big way.

Coke-oven effluents characterisation revealed considerable levels of phenols, cyanide and ammonia and contaminate the surrounding water bodies. This study demonstrates that phenols can be recovered with 99% efficiency using solvent extraction process with employment of MIBK, detoxification of cyanide by FeSO4 - NaOCl and ammonia recovery using synthetic zeolites particularly 13X with repeated loading/regeneration cycles. This study highlights that pollutants can be converted into resource/by-products thereby providing lots of profitability. A Company in Netherlands has been working on commercialisation of our research work on ammonia recovery using synthetic zeolites.

A database on characterisation of coal washery effluents and also on available screened flocculants/coagulants for its clarification/settlement, established for strategic environmental management. The various environmental conditions/operating parameters for polyacrylamide based flocculants were optimised after establishment of settling mechanism. A model was developed to provide the relationship between settling rate, pulp density and flocculant dose - which can be utilised to develop a rational approach for designing of settling ponds with enhanced settling rate by flocculation. This has led coal washeries in not only towards environmentally compliant but also economic recovery of coal fines.

8

Page 9: CENTRE OF MINING ENVIRONMENT - Gurdeep · Web viewComparative Study of Different Polyacrylamide Based Flocculants for Clarification of Coal Washery Effluents. Jr. of Industrial Pollution

A database on ambient air quality in Jharia & Raniganj Coalfields established for use as a reference for strategic planning and future studies. This research emphasised the apportionment of sources of pollution rather singling out the mining as only the polluting industry. An air quality depreciation index developed which allows more realistic air quality assessment as compared to interpretative evaluations to National Ambient Air Quality Standards.

A database on mine water/effluents quality was established for various coal mining areas. This has helped in evolving the utilisation propensity of water resources/mine discharge waters. Augmentation of pumped out water from various underground coal mines was emphasised in line with the National Water Policy. This helped meeting the water demand particularly for Drinking Water Supply. We also helped various authorities TISCO/BCCL/MADA in proper maintenance and operation of such water treatment plants. Overall this research helped in energy and water conservation and social development of the mining populations.

A Genesis of occurrence, of acid mine drainage (AMD) from North Eastern Coalmines of India, provided an understanding of this severe environmental problem with subsequent management aspects. At source AMD control by application of bactericidal means (anionic surfactant- SLS and food preservatives-benzoates and sorbates) helped reducing the overall cost of AMD abatement. Design as provided for abatement of acid mine drainage by neutralization means is in operation and providing the environmental compliance to the satisfaction of regulatory authority in the area.

Characterisation of spent pot liner (solid/hazardous waste from aluminum smelters) revealed considerable toxic leachable concentrations of cyanide and fluorides-which pose serious water pollution problems around its disposal environment. Detoxification of cyanides through complexation with iron salts with removal efficiency of CN-over 98% has been achieved. Fluoride removal process was developed using a combined system of lime and in-house developed ion - exchanger - which provides complete removal of F-. This low-cost ion exchanger has also the capacity to remove trace/heavy metals. This investigation reflected that SPL free from F- & CN- with high carbon content has a market value.

Eco-friendly chrome-less rollers have been developed to eliminate the environmental chromium contamination and pollution caused by use of Chrome Compositive Leater-Clad (CCLC) rollers commonly used in cotton roller ginning industries. On the basis of the design and development of various rollers with subsequent performance evaluation studies, chrome-free RCF roller has been successfully demonstrated with reference to techno commercial and eco-friendliness in ginning industry.

Project Leader, World Bank aided Project of Ministry of Environment & Forests / GOI Environmental Management Capacity Building for Non- coal Mining Sector worth Rs.18.00 Crore.

Created the Website for our MOEF sponsored ENVIS Centre on Mining Environment (MIN-ENVIS) which was inaugurated by Shri P.V. Jayakrishna, Secretary to Govt. of India/MoEF on Sept. 14, 2001. Further our MIN-ENVIS publications (Monographs and Newsletters) received ISBN numbers and are available ONLINE. MIN-ENVIS database consists of over 15,000 references on various attributes of mining environment with mailing list of about 1000 users. About 50,000+ users have been visiting this Site monthly.
