Rhonda Hyatt, 9, from Coloma, stands at Picklesthe pony’s head while Joann Stephens teaches

Daniel Fischer, 6, how to safely walk around theback of a horse while Jeremiah Fischer looks on. Safety is top priority at the non-profit Stable Lifethat offers equine activities. Younger participants

are paired with older, more experiencedparticipants after rules are reviewed before

each activity.

By Kathleen McGwin

Founder and president of StableLife, Joann Stephens, teaches Eric Fischer how to organize bridles

and halters that will be used during family day in the equine activities

at the non-profit.

The equine activity program at Stable Life isn’t just fun, it’s work, too, and participants learn about responsibility and commitment beforegetting to ride on a horse. Daniel and Eric

Fischer from Oxford clean up after groomingthe horse they will soon be riding. The Fischer family finds Stable Life “a special place” for

their family, said mom Hope.

Brianna Bohringer, 19, has beenvolunteering at Stable Life for two years

and recently was “buddied” with Ashton King, 9, during a Family Day at the

non-profit equine activity organization.

by Mary Kunasch On Friday, Oct. 25 I had a photo shoot scheduled at Candle Freaks in Wautoma with a group of ladies who meet for cof-fee every Friday morning and have been doing this for the past three years. As I arrived at the quaint shop locat-ed on the corner of Hwy. 21 and South Waupaca St., I entered through the back door up the small stairway into the cof-fee shop and the owner, Jamie Hendon, told me the ladies were upstairs. Jamie and Ashley Meyer were busy working on a treat for the group, blood orange Mimosas. I proceeded upstairs through this winding stairway that reminded me of my grandmothers home and at the top of the landing was a cinnamon struesel bundt cake for the ladies to have with their coffee while they gathered on this cool crisp October morning. As I peaked inside the room, the ladies were all dressed in casual garb. Chatting, laughter and smiles radiated the room. I immediately felt like I could be part of

this group. They were warm and invit-ing. Some of the ladies I knew, many I did not, but in such a compassionate way I felt like I knew them all from the time I entered the doorway. How wonderful it is to see a group from all parts of the area that begin their day at 7 a.m. on a Friday exercis-ing under the direction of Donna Norlin at Club TEAM and then they unite to enjoy coffee and conversation. (They also work out together on Mondays and Wednesdays with Paula Pfaller.) In today’s world it seems like we are all on this fast track going somewhere - appointments, commitments, and busy like bees in everyday life. I often ask myself, I wonder where we are all go-ing. Do we lose perspective of what is important in life? - friends and family. This group is grounded, they are there for each other in good times and in sad times. They support each oth-er. They share. They enjoy each other. What more could anyone ask for in a group? It is like a Friday therapy ses-

sion in a quaint comfortable atmosphere. These ladies do more than coffee - they help with fundraisers including one for their own Donna Norlin’s son who is suffering from Lyme disease. Their 21 year old son has been undergoing exten-sive treatment for Lyme disease this past year and continues to struggle with the disease each and everyday. The ladies’ group helped with the fundraiser held re-cently at Moose Inn, Wautoma. Another member, Helena Waala, re-cently lost her beloved husband, Sam. This group supported her through the dark days and at the end by attending the funeral service as a group. In this sad time, you know the support is there, they love, they care, and they laughed as they said they hardly recognized each other when they gathered as they don’t see each other dressed up. A new project started by Karen Broekema, Neshkoro, is an art fundrais-er for the Neshkoro Area Community Center (formerly the Neshkoro Grade School). Broekema is asking art classes,

art groups and individuals to paint a 6x6 canvas and they will be displayed at the community center in one large block looking like a patchwork quilt. Once she mentioned Neshkoro Grade School I knew I had to do one as I went to that grade school 4-8th grade. I am not an artist, but I will come up with something. When the project is completed peo-ple will buy a square and the individual paintings will be distributed. The pur-chaser will not know which square they are getting. You need not be a profes-sional artist to participate. If you would like to be a part of the patchwork art and paint on canvas, call Broekema at 920-293-4533. Watch the Argus and Resorter for more on this project as it progresses. How refreshing it was for me to see these girls enjoying life on a Friday morning, taking time to be there for each other and enjoying each others company. It is a group that cares and shares and I was so happy to be a part of it.

Schenk reigns as Resident of the MonthHerbie Schenk completes his reign as Wild Rose Manor’s Resident of the Month for October. Schenk was born in Wisconsin Rapids, joining four sisters and a twin brother. Growing up on a farm, his family grew such vegetables as potatoes, carrots, and cabbage. Everything was canned. Work was done with horses, and livestock was butchered on the farm. Schenk moved to Wild Rose in 1945, and took up employ-ment at E.L. Knoke’s Sawmill, the Kiechaefer box factory, and the Berlin Foundry at various times. He became a fireman with the Wild Rose Fire Department in 1960, and is an honorary member to this day. He has also been a hospitality minister at St. Joe’s Catholic Church in Wautoma. Schenk’s interests include watching The Price is Right, Walker, Texas Ranger, Judge Judy, and plays bingo when possible.

Spotlight“First Chance”

of Redgranite Right as you take Hwy 21 east into the town of

Redgranite, you’ll find my next stop. Dianne & Eddie will welcome you to “First Chance”, as they have for almost 10 years since March of 2004. When you step into their place, you’ll

see what a small town can bring to any guest that stops by - good old- fashioned hospitality. In the photo the two are getting in the spirit for their upcoming Halloween

Bash that will have Karaoke and a Costume Contest with a twist. Want to know what that is…. well, I guess you’ll just have to show up to find out.

Friday, Nov. 1st from 8 p.m.-midnight if you dare.. Nov. 9th will bring the 1st Annual Dick Haka Cribbage Tournament

(mixed-$10 per person with 100% payback) that starts at 1pm. In December, be sure to watch for advertisements about their annual Christmas party.

Dianne & Ed sponsor several teams year-round. In winter, they have women and men pool teams and also darts for mixed teams. In the spring, they have

horseshoe teams and sponsor a mens softball team. There’s always some good Emil’s pizzas available anytime they are open, which are Tuesdays

through Sundays, Noon to close. Come on out and enjoy some GREAT Green Bay Game drink specials. Lots of fun-lots

of history & lots of pleasant conversation. Have any questions; please give them a call at 920/566-2845. I think you’ll have a

This Christmas Give Something that Means SomethingHoliday Mail for Heroes - You Can Make a Difference This year every house-hold in Waushara County and adjoining counties can make a difference by helping the Red Cross ensure that members of our Armed Forces are remem-bered this Christmas. You are encouraged to make cards, or you can send a special mes-sage in a card you purchased. In order to make cards as meaningful as possible to a wide audience, the Red Cross recommends using titles such as “Dear Service Member, Veteran, or Military Family Member,” include your heart-felt sentiments and sign all cards. Cards made by groups,

school classes, etc. should be bundled in single, large enve-lopes, excluding small enve-lopes for individual cards. Please refrain from using glitter when making cards as it can aggravate health issues of wounded recipients. The Red Cross is asking that people not enclose any items with the holiday cards. This is a great project for our county residents and be-yond and cards can be dropped off at the Waushara Argus office at W7781 State Rd. 21 & 73, Wautoma. Some of the cards will be distributed local-ly to area veterans including the residents at Veterans Home

at King. Plan now to use this as a project for 4-H, scout-ing, classrooms, civic clubs, church youth groups, and or-ganizations. It is our hope to gather 10,000 cards in Waush-ara County for Holiday Mail for Heroes. We need your help in meeting this goal. Deadline for this project is Dec. 1 so they can be pack-aged and sent to area service-men and women and veterans and military family members. For more information call 920-787-3334, email [email protected] or John Kost at 920-733-4481 or e-mail john.kost@redcross. org.

Redgranite Library Science Night held Oct. 21Children enjoyed programming robots built from a common household item at Redgranite Library’s Science Night on Oct. 21. Kyler Meyer, Jeremy Worden, and Neven Meyer worked together as a team to design a method to contain a simulated oil spill before utilizing their robot to clean up the spill. On Monday, Nov. 21, participants will become geospatial thinkers as they design and map their ideal park under the direction of Andrea Braatz, Waushara County 4-H Youth Development Program Advisor and assistance of Danielle Marwitz, a library volunteer. The program will begin at 4 p.m. and conclude at 5 p.m. to better accom-modate transportation schedules.

The Petersons were from Milwaukee and the Grasses were from Greenville. All came to hike with their grandmother, Flo Walker, Wautoma. All participants’ dogs (even the stuffed ones) were given a yellow Ice Age Trail scarf. Why is my child acting like that? At some point, all parents deal with the frustration of having their toddler crying or kicking in the middle of a store. While these behaviors are dif-ficult for us to deal with, they are very normal for children in these age groups. At almost every age, children behave in ways that we will not find easy or pleas-ant. Generally with time, these “trying” behaviors usually go away. Typical behaviors for toddlers include: tantrums; saying “No!”; and biting or hitting. Typical behaviors for preschoolers include: testing limits; ask-ing “Why?”; and lying, stealing, or argu-ing. Positive approaches to children have the most favorable impact on their behavior. It is important for parents and caregivers to have a variety of strategies to use because every strategy may not work for every child. Here are a few approaches that may be helpful: •Tell your child in advance what is happen-ing. “Today after nap, we’re going to the library.” •Respond calmly and briefly. Try not to talk about the “why” until

things have settled down. •Teach what to do instead of what not to do. “Tell me calmly what is wrong” instead of “Stop screaming and throwing things!” •Offer real choices. “Do you want to wear your red or blue hat to go to the store?” •Be consistent. •Use humor or games. “Let’s set the timer and see if you can do it in 2 minutes!” •Catch your child being good. “You did a nice job of waiting for your turn.” Lastly, acknowledge that parent-ing and caregiving is really hard work. Remember to take care of yourself, talk with others, and get the support you need in order to successfully care for the chil-dren.
