From the Central State University Foundation Executive Director

The Central State University Foundation views stewardship of Foundation resources as its highest priority. We are pleased to report the

Foundation in FY 2014 once again received an un-qualified audit/ clean opinion from the independent accounting firm, Crowe Horwath, LLP. The opinion means that the Foundation’s financial statements fairly represent the financial position of the Foun-dation and that the audit showed net assets of $23,393,864 an increase of 5% over the previous year. A Statement of the Foundation’s Financial Position is contained on page 13.

Chaired by Trustee Dennis Kernahan, the Founda-tion’s Investment Committee works closely with Merrill Lynch Financial Services to ensure adherence to the Foundation’s investment policy and strict man-agement of the endowed funds. The audit reflects growth in the Foundation’s investment portfolio. Merrill Lynch and the investment committee meet monthly and the investment committee reports to the Foundation Board on a quarterly basis. Founda-

tion Giving and investment graphics are on page xx.

The Foundation is steadfast in its planning for the capital campaign. Meeting on a regular schedule, the Foundation is committed in assisting the University in undertaking major building renovations, providing faculty with the resources and equipment necessary to conduct faculty/student research, building the Foundation’s endowment, expand academic program offerings and enhance scholarship offerings. To do so requires significant funding not available through state appropriations. Detailed information about the capital campaign is contained on pages 14-16.

This report highlights the many contributions of donors to the “Alma Mater”. We are grateful. Our success in 2015 -2016 and beyond is dependent upon long term support from “old friends” like you. We have set high fundraising goals for this year. We look forward to meeting with you throughout the year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Veronica Watkins

Central State University Foundation Giving & Investments

In recent years, the number of national corporate headquarters located in Green and Montgomery Counties has dwindled to a few. As such, the

number of corporate gifts from “old corporate friends” has also been reduced. For example, this past year, Standard Register a long time financial supporter of the University was purchased by a New York based company, significantly reduced its workforce, and their giving to the University was not renewed this past year. This requires the Foundation to not only seek corporate support on a regional and national basis, it demands that the Foundation develop closer relationships with the remaining cor-porations and foundations in the Dayton area. It also demands that the Foundation seek increased support from alumni and friends.

The Foundation receives the majority of its gifts from individual donors, alumni and friends who are 55 years of age or older. The Foundation’s donor base is slightly more women than men. As the donor base ages the 1887 Legacy Society, the Foundation’s planned giving program becomes the perfect giving vehicle for many of our donors. In recent years

major gifts to the University have come in the form of bequests. This past year the Foundation received bequests from the estates of Alumni Lance O. Jackson and Earnest L. Washington totaling over 110,000 dollars.

The Give Your Campaign is designed to encourage younger donors to make gifts to the University. Please see the status report on the Give Your Year campaign contained herein. Most Centralians say they want the option of giving online. Although the Foundation has provided the option for the last few years, most Foundation gifts are made by check through the mail. We will have to do a better job of promoting online giving.

The Foundation has made it a practice to visit with alumni seeking their support. Centralians give because they are asked. During the past year, the Foundation visited with, spoke to and hosted donors on a frequent basis. We will do more in 2015-2016. Also, the Foundation will implement direct mail campaigns, personal visits and telethons seeking increased financial support.

In 2014-2015 the Foundation saw the 100% Employee

Individual educational and administrative units such as the College of Business, President’s Senior Cabinet and Instutional Advancement achieved 100% giving-The Board of Trustees of the Foundation and University pledged 100% giving to the capital campaign.

Fundraising Plan 2015-2016

The CSU Foundation has developed its fiscal year 2015 -2016 fundraising plan. The campaign goal

is $3.5 million dollars in campaign gifts, pledges, planned gifts and in-kind support. The plan is consis-tent with the fund development goals of the Capital Campaign “A Promising Tomorrow…” developed by the consulting firm Saad and Shaw. The Foundation will focus its efforts on increased scholarship support, student retention and graduation, and special program sponsorships.

A copy of the 2015-2016 fundraising plan is avaliable upon request.

“Over the long term, the Foundation expects the endowment to grow at an average of five percent annually. This is consistent with the Foundation’s objective to maintain the purchasing power of the endowment assets…”

Earvin “Magic” Johnson agrees to Chair Central State’s Capital Campaign Efforts

Few athletes are truly superstars, changing the way

their sport is played with their awe-inspiring skills. In NBA basketball the names of Bob Cousy, Wilt Chamberlin, Julius Erving (Dr. J) and Michael Jordan come quickly to mind. The name Earvin “Magic” Johnson belongs in this special group of players. For 13 years Magic dominated the NBA. He was a member of five championship teams. He won the Most Valuable Player Award and the Finals MVP Award three times each. He was a

12-time All-Star and a nine-time member of the All-NBA First Team. He was truly MAGIC.

Earvin Johnson was first called “Magic” at Everett High School, East Lansing Michigan. He was given the nickname by a sports writer who had just seen the 15-

year-old budding super-star notch 36 points, 16 rebounds and 16 assists. As a high school senior, Johnson led Everett to a 27-1 record and the state title while averaging 28.8 points and 16.8 rebounds.

Earvin wanted to attend college close to home, so he enrolled at Michigan State University. Earvin’s impact on the Big 10 Basketball Conference was immediate. He put up impressive numbers as a freshman (17.0 points per game, 7.9 rebounds per game and 7.4 assists per game), leading the Spartans to

16 • 2015 Contributors Report

a 25-5 record and the Conference title. As an All-American sophomore Johnson directed his team to the national title game beating the herald Larry Bird Indiana State squad in perhaps the most anticipated (and most watched) NCAA

Championship Game ever played.

Having accomplished all he wanted to on the college level, Johnson passed up his final two seasons and entered

the 1979 NBA Draft. He quickly became one of the all-time greats winning an NBA title in his rooky season, beating the great Dr. J and the Philadelphia 76’s.

Today, Earvin Johnson is regarded as one of the most powerful African Americans in business. His company, MJE, returned movie theaters to the inner cities of America, owned a chain of Starbucks and TGIF restaurants, established a movie studio, promotional company and Sodexo/ Magic a university food catering company that is contracted by CSU. Most impressive MJE has part ownership in the NBA Los Angeles Lakers, and the universally beloved Los Angeles Dodgers major league baseball

team.

Mr. Johnson‘s business ventures have resulted in his company having a value that exceeds $1 billion and personal net worth of $500 million.

Around this time a year ago, Madame President Cynthia Jackson Hammond and University Trustee Board Chairman Gary Dowdell traveled to Los Angeles to meet with Mr. Johnson. Los Angeles Alumni Chapter Presi-dent Raymond Rooney made introductions to the legendary great. After two days of dis-cussion and sharing of information Mr. Johnson agreed to join the Central State University team as chairman of the University’s first capital campaign.

Magic Johnson was always driving ahead of the competition.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Delta Zeta Chapter raises scholarship funds to support CSU students

On behalf of the Central State University Foundation, we should like to thank the Delta Zeta Foundation for establishing a campaign

to raise scholarship funds for students attending the Alma Mater. During Homecoming 2014, the Kappa’s held their 1st Annual Delta Zeta Awards and Fund Raising Reception. All Kappa’s were encouraged to give generously to the Delta Zeta Foundation and attend the reception. Under the leadership of a hard working committee comprised of members of the Delta Zeta Chapter Foundation, and other Delta Zeta initiates who lent their time and talents to the devel-opment of this fundraising initiative, the event was a tremendous success.

CSU students received scholarships and individual Kappa Brothers were acknowledged for their many contributions to the Alma Mater and the Fraternity.

The Delta Zeta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was established on the campus of Central State

University in Wilberforce, Ohio. Under the guidance of G. Thurston Frazier and the past Grand Polemarch George F. David II, the brothers of the Wilberforce Alumni Chapter petitioned the Grand Chapter for a charter at Central State University, which was granted

and went into effect February 5, 1952. Delta Zeta Chapter is the100th undergraduate chapter established in Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

The mission of the Delta Zeta Foundation is to raise scholarship funding to award to students needing “bridge

funding” to remain in school through graduation. Should you wish to contribute, please visit the Delta Zeta Foundation website at www.dzbantu.com for information about the fundraising campaign, Delta Zeta Chapter or the Foundation.

Please know we look forward to seeing you at the 2nd Annual Delta Zeta Awards and Fund Raising Reception during Homecoming 2015.

The annual Dream Keeper fundraising campaign is one that continues to generate excitement, pride and accomplishment. Each year students

trickle into the office of Institutional Advancement seeking private financial assistance to bridge the gap between financial aid and school expenses. We are pleased to be of help! A Dream Keeper scholarship

of $1,000 or more ensures that many of our students remain in school. As students walk across the stage for graduation it’s a wonderful feeling to know as a Dream Keeper you made the difference.

This past year Dream Keeper campaign fundraising strategies included:

• Direct mail campaign with 5,000 alumni receiving a Dream Keepers solicitation letter;

• “24 Hours of Giving” campaign, December 11th with over 2,500 alumni receiving solicitation calls from faculty, students and staff. The University received $xxxx in pledges. Of this amount $xxxxx was paid in full;

• fundraising firm, name of firm to conduct a Phone-a-thon during the month of December with 3,020 alumni and friends receiving solicitation calls. The University received an additional xxxx in pledges. Of this amount xxxx was paid in full; The fundraising firm made 860 “call back” solicitation calls. The University increased its pledges by xxxxx. of this amount xxxx was paid in full;

• The Vice President met with several key alumni over the holiday break and raised $23,000 in cash gifts for the Dream Keepers campaign.

Collectively the campaign raised over $90,000 and enabled us to assist 78 students. We must do more.

“I know one person can make a difference, I’m a Dream Keeper!”

Please know your Dream Keeper scholarship gift will keep a student in school. Thank you for being a Dream Keeper!

This year the Central State University Foundation has committed to raising $250,000 for the “Dream Keepers” Scholarship campaign to financially assist an ever-increasing number of students.

In a recent September Dayton Daily News article, it was noted Central State University simply had too many students who cannot afford the cost of a college education and were amassing significant debt or dropping out of school. The article was correct!

The University works hard to keep its tuition the lowest in the state of Ohio. Yet ninety- three percent (93%) of our students require private funding to “bridge the gap” between financial aid and school expenses. Too many students have the dream but lack the resources to make their dream a reality.

The Dream Keepers Scholarship Program enables students to maintain the “dream” of earning a Central State University education. With your financial assistance students are graduating. Please send your Dream Keeper gift to:

Give Your Year Campaign

Cognizant that corporations and foundations weigh the percentage of alumni giving when making decisions to award programmatic and

research funds to the University, the National Alumni Association (NAA) has implemented the Give Your Year (GYY) fundraising campaign. Currently, CSU’s alumni giving rate is 19 percent. The goal of GYY is to increase the rate to 35 percent in 2015-2016 and raise $500,000 in alumni support over the five-year campaign period. The campaign can reach this goal by encouraging all alumni to at least make a com-mitment of giving your class year each month.

For example, if your class year is 1973, you give $19.73 per month for a five-year period (60 months). Your total contribution would be $1,183.80, an amount all of us can give. GYY giving by alumni collec-tively makes a LOUD STATEMENT to our corporate and foundation

partners weighing their support of the University.

The GYY campaign implemented in March 2015, has raised $46,839.67. Alumni have used a variety of giving options: Alumni Office Payments $35,170.71 Online Payments $11,449.85 PayPal Payments $219.11

The campaign utilizes email and social media- blasts, direct mailings and chapter presen-tations to promote the campaign.

Kudos go to Alumni Felton Page, President, National Alumni Associ-ation (NAA), Robin Fields-Pearson, Richard Shepherd, Caleb Brown, Robert Bowles, and Keith Perkins, Director, Alumni Relations for their commitment in implementing the GYY campaign. Have you contribut-ed to the GYY campaign?

A life lived well

Dr. James Elam’ 54, a true Centralian passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2015. Dr. Elam was a religious, entrepreneur, fraternal and philan-

thropic titan. He was known for making a difference in the lives of everyone he touched. His continuous support of his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi and Central State University was legendary.

Dr. Elam took enormous pride in his fraternity. He was an Omega man who lived the cardinal principals of Scholarship, Manhood, Perseverance and Uplift each day. Dr. Elam was initiated on March 17, 1952, through the Eta Gamma chapter located on the campus of Central State University (then Central State College). In later years Dr. Elam was an active member of the Mu Chi Chapter in Dayton, Ohio.

Dr. Elams leadership had a lasting impact on the Fraternity. For example through his leadership the Fraternity established its own federal credit union. In recognition of his many contributions in 1995, the 800-seat auditorium inside the fraternity’s world headquarters in Decatur, Georgia was named in his honor. During his 62 years of service to Omega, Dr. Elam won nearly every award, at every level of the Fraternity. In early 2013, Dr. Elam was summoned by President Barack Obama to the White House to be present as the National Park Service designated

the Colonel Charles Young estate as a national monument by Presidential Proclamation.

Dr. Elam, a member of the class of ‘54 was an active participant in his class. He would always attend the planned functions and activities during Homecoming.

He served twelve years on the Central State University Foundation Board of Trustees. He was chairman of several major fundraising campaigns, the restoration of Marauder Football ($1.5 million) and two alumni challenge programs that raised over $4 million dollars. He donated $330,000 to fund the Robotics Program that bears his name. He also contributed the funds to purchase the $1.1 million dollar urban campus, CSU Dayton. The campus also bears his name.

In 2013, Dr. Cynthia Jackson Hammond named Dr. Elam recipient of the President’s distinguished chair the highest award an alumnus can receive at the University.

Robert and Ann Carter – A Life Long Love Affair

Robert, a resident of Akron, was a senior, 2nd Lieutenant in Central State University’s ROTC program, majoring in elementary education. Ann was a first quarter freshman from Cleveland, OH who had just arrived at the University in 1960. They met, fell hopelessly in love, eloped and married. Thus began a marriage that lasted 54 years until Robert’s untimely passing in January 2015. Robert and Ann truly enjoyed a life long love affair.

Ann Carter, Robert’s loving wife decided in July 2015 to establish the Robert

A. Carter Endowed Scholarship honoring his memory. Robert A Carter (1939–2015) was a 1960 graduate of Central State University. As a result of the military training he received through the University’s ROTC, Robert enjoyed a 23-year career in the military eventually becoming a lieutenant Colonel. His military career

included tours of duty in Germany, Vietnam, Panama, Puerto Rico as well as the United States.

The Carter family lived in and traveled throughout the world.

Robert retired from the military in 1984. He spent the next 17 years working for State Farm Insurance. Yes, this a wonderful story, but there is more.

Robert was born in Akron, Ohio one of three children born to Elder Joseph and Zepha Carter. Robert learned the value of “seizing every opportunity that presents itself” from his father. Upon graduation from high school

in 1956, Robert was employed as a waiter in the prestigious Mayflower Hotel in Akron. One evening Robert met a stranger who was very impressed with his demeanor and work ethic. The man engaged him in conversation, encouraged him to attend Central

State University and provided annual scholarships to help defray the costs. Seizing the opportunity of the scholarship, Robert attended CSU and graduated in 4 years.

“Central State University means everything to me. The University changed my life” Robert would say at every opportunity. He noted the University had a spirit that challenged one to do well academically, take the skills learned and excel academicaly and in life. He was grateful for the support of department heads and faculty who worked with and counseled him and his fellow classmates. Indeed, his best friends were Centralians Ronald Clark and Charles Delaney who also excelled academically.

Robert never learned the name of his benefactor. On occasion he traveled back to Akron conducting an exhaustive search for the man who changed his life. While he never had a reunion with his benefactor, he consistently thanked him by encouraging young people to be the best they can be. He not only mo-tivated students, he provided them with scholarship assistance.

The Alma Mater applauds the life of Robert A.

Cater’60 and his loving wife Ann Carter for their many contributions to Central State University and the communities in which they lived.

The criteria for the endowed scholarship is as follows:

1) Inner City Youth

2) Low Income

3) 2.5 grade point average

4) Award to a student each academic year

5) Apply in the Spring (for Fall semester)

6) Scholarship to assist new first time freshmen

CENTRALIANS!Please join Ann Carter in establishing an Endowed Named Scholarship to assist future students at Central State University. To create an endowed fund, contact the Central State University Foundation:

Mail: Central State University Foundation, PO Box 64, Dayton, OH 45401-0064Telephone: 937-640-1214Email: [email protected]

Once established, the endowed fund will produce annual scholarships for Central State University students.

“Doris Nicholson was the CHAMPION of the child who needs a little extra help or support.”

“ Doris welcomes to her class the children who are a Challenge”

“Doris has written several plays for children including the highly acclaimed “Hands Around the World”, appeared on “The Cosby Show” and has made significant contribu-tions to our community.”

“She’s the very best.”

The quotes noted here are just a sampling of the

many accolades we received from profession-al collegues of alumnus Doris Nicholson. We concur!

Doris has also given much to Central State

University. She has been a tireless worker on behalf of the Alma Mater, serving as President of the Chicago Alumni Chapter, hosting meetings and other fundraisers in her lovely home. She has been a consistent contributor, always quick to respond

and third grade teacher. Her educational philosophy was

to create an environment where children can change and grow, to become a different person, a better person through education. Doris

to requests to help CSU students.

When one thinks of the excellence of Central State Univer-sity, one also thinks of Alumnus Doris Nichol-son. Doris excelled in her work as a first, second

spent 27 years in the Scarsdale School District in the state of New York were she was acclaimed a gifted teacher. She also worked a short time in the Chicago School District.

She was known not only for her commitment to students, but also to parents. Doris un-

derstood that a child’s success depended in large measure on the parent and teacher working as a team to educate the child. Always accessible, Doris was viewed as a valuable resource for all parents.

She learned the value of

family from her parents who were childhood sweethearts who migrated from Oklahoma to Chicago in the 1920’s. She was the middle child with an older brother and younger sister that sprung from the marriage of this strong

willed couple. She credits her parents

for her life long interest in education and com-mitment to community. Zeno Nicholson was a 1951 graduate of Northwestern University, School of Business and her mother Novella was a proud graduate of Langston University, an HBCU. Together they were strong advocates of

community involvement through their church.

Education is indeed the string that binds the Nicholson family together. Doris’ children and grandchildren have graduated from such prestigious institutions as Harvard University, Uni-versity of Pennsylvania, and Wesleyan College.

Doris has stated many times “success comes through individual and collective efforts. A long time collector of Black art, Doris has gifted several pieces of her collection to the Alma Mater. This is her way of making an indi-vidual gift that will help CSU students for years to come. We say thank you to a true Centralian, Doris Nicholson.

Tom Joyner and the Morning Crew Celebrate Central State University Alumni

Tom Joyner and the Morning Crew, WROU radio personality Faith Daniels and Dayton Govern-ment Officials visited Central State University

Dayton September 23,and 24, 2014 to celebrate CSU Alumni for ranking 6th nationally amongst HBCU’s in percentage of alumni giving. Tom also, paid homage to area alumni for their for participation in recent Tom Joyner Foundation sponsored fundraising campaigns- “May 2014, School of the Month”, “Do you have a number”, and “You Can Go”.

Tuesday evening, a Tom Joyner/ CSU Alumni cele-bration took place at Taste, a black owned fine dining restaurant. A standing room only crowd of 400 alumni and friends attended the event. During the evening, Tom and the Morning Crew heard about the University’s recent successes- construction of a new $30 million student center, Alumnus Joshua Smith’63 gift of one million dollars, the University’s new land grant status and most significantly the increased academic profiles of the 2014 freshman class. It was an informa-tive and fun filled evening.

Wednesday afternoon Dayton Government Officials, City Commissioner Jeff Mims and former Mayor Richard Clay Dixon proclaimed September 24, 2014 TOM JOYNER DAY in the city of Dayton. Tom Joyner toured the CSU Dayton facility. He came away very impressed with the Tom Joyner Veterans Program housed on the campus. Tom also spoke to faculty, staff and students. During his remarks, Mr. Joyner stated “ Of all the HBCU’s, I love Central State Universi-ty the best!” He challenged CSU alumni and friends to continue to give.
